Martha Jones Lewis

SARDIS—Martha Jones Lewis, 93, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services were Friday at First Baptist Church in Sardis. Burial was in Union Baptist Cemetery. Rev. Howard G. Beam officiated. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home had charge.

Lewis, born Feb. 6, 1916, to the late Martin E. Jones Sr. and Loura Bratton Jones, was an operator for South Central Bell, having retired after 35 years of service. She was a member of Sardis Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School teacher for over 30 years.

She served as president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Sardis for many years.

She was active in the community helping with bingo parties at nursing homes, sold poppies all over town on Memorial Day to aid disabled veterans and for many years placed flags in the local cemeteries on Memorial Day.

She was very patriotic and sold fruit cakes yearly to raise money for the American Legion Auxiliary. She also did tap dancing routines at many events in the community for years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Baxter Lewis and one daughter, Kay Lewis Griffin.

Survivors include: two sisters, Annie J. Vinson of Sardis and Mary Ellen Vinson of Meridian; one brother, Martin E. “Bud” Jones of Oxford and his wife, Hazel and one grandson, Christopher L. Griffin and his wife, Lisa of Southaven.

Malcom McKinney

SARDIS—Malcom McKinney, 76, died Friday, October 9, 2009.

Services were held October 17 at South West Mortuary in Seattle, Wash.

McKinney, born Aug. 13, 1933, to the late Green and Mary Parker-McKinney, received his certificate in welding in 1957 and opened his own welding business. While running his business he was also employed with the state of Washington and retired in 1997.

He was preceded in death by one son, Glen McKinney.

Survivors include: one daughter, Lenetha McKinney-Ali of Seattle, Wash.; two sons, Malcom McKinney Jr. of Seattle and Larry McKinney of Tampa, Fla.; five brothers, Green McKinney Jr. of Batesville, Willie A. McKinney and Joe W. McKinney and Lawrence McKinney of Sardis, George McKinney, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Sam McKinney of North Carolina; one sister, Pearly M. Cole of Sardis;10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
