The North Delta softball team ended a grueling nine game five-day stretch with a 9-2 thumping of Pillow Academy Wednesday afternoon at Green Wave Field.
Samantha Massoth threw six innings of three-hit ball to get the pitching victory. The senior left-hander struck out two while walking only one batter and not allowing a hit until the fifth inning.
North Delta, (9-3), jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off Pillow starting pitcher Katy Coleman. Bradi Beard and Julianna Morrow led off the inning with back-to-back triples. Morrow then later scored on a Laci Dubravec RBI groundout to give the Wave a 3-0 lead.
Massoth, Mary Jane Morrow and Linsey Hebert kept the two-two rally alive with singles to drive in a pair of runs to close out scoring in the inning. Massoth got out of trouble in the top of the third when Pillow put runners on second and third with one out but escaped further damage by getting a force out at the plate and a popup to end the inning.
North Delta picked up a single run in the bottom of the third when Julianna Morrow drew a one-out walk then later scored on a RBI single by Lauren Kimzey.
The Mustangs got on the board in the top of the fifth by scoring a pair of runs to make the score 5-2 only to have the host team answer with three runs of their own for a 8-2 lead.
The Green Wave finished the scoring in the bottom of the sixth as Vicki Johnson led off the inning with a walk then advanced to third on a single by Beard before scoring on a wild pitch.
Beard led North Delta offensively with a triple and a single while Hebert, Mary Jane Morrow, Kimzey, Massoth and Julianna Morrow all registered singles. Sara Waldrip scored a pair of runs as courtesy runner.
The Green Wave will return to action Tuesday at 4 p.m. hosting West Memphis, (Ark.) to close a four- game home stand before hitting the road Wednesday at Pillow.
