A police officer on patrol arrested a mask-wearing pedestrian who pulled a butcher knife from his pants pocket.

Patrick Elin Bownes was wearing the mask, according to the Friday, May 29 police report from Carl Glass.

“Patrick stated that he was on the way to kill his neighbor,” Glass’s report stated. “Patrick stated that he had planned to kill his neighbor for some time.”

The report did not name the neighbor.

Glass wrote that he was patrolling on Martin Luther King Drive when he saw someone walking in a Halloween mask. Bownes removed the mask when asked by the officer, then he produced the knife when asked if he had any weapons.

“The knife is made by Chicago Cutlery and is over 12 inches in length,” Glass wrote.

A criminal background check showed that Brownes is a convicted felon. He was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon by a felon, according to the report.

In other weekend crime, Batesville police reported a purse was stolen from a vehicle that had parked behind the Veranda on the Downtown Square.

A brick was thrown through the front passenger window to retrieve the purse. The incident occurred Sunday.

A homeowner on Hoskins Road also reported cash stolen from a closet in the home. The police report redacted the address of the home, and the name of the homeowner, but not the amount – $1,600.

The police report was made early Monday morning after the homeowner came home at 12:30 a.m.

The burglar kicked in a door to gain entry.
