The South Panola Lady Tigers fast pitch team (10-7, 3-1) fell to the hands of the Lady Golden Wave 2-1 on Monday at Tupelo for their district loss. The last game between these two teams was one week ago and the Lady Tigers shut down the Lady Golden Wave 6-0.
But Monday night’s game was a different story according to head coach Ashleigh Hicks.
“We did not show up and we beat ourselves,” Hicks said. “The girls are just not focused right now and they are satisfied. We let other circumstances control the game instead of us. We let them take it from us. Granted, we will probably win the district but I wanted to go undefeated. Every year we lose one district game.”
It was a hard-fought defensive battle until the bottom of the sixth when the Lady Golden Wave scored the first run.
The Lady Tigers answered in the top of the seventh. First baseman Meri Morgan Fortune was safe at first on an error. The shortstop overthrew the first baseman. Pitcher Kenzi Reed hit a RBI (run batted in) double driving Fortune in for the only run for the Lady Tigers. The Lady Golden Wave answered with a run in the bottom of the frame for the victory.
The Lady Tigers had three hits and five errors and the Lady Golden Wave had four hits and two errors. Hitting for the Lady Tigers were Hillari Plummer with one and Reed with two.
Reed pitched the complete game in seven innings striking out eight and allowing four hits, two runs and one walk.
The Lady Tigers’ game on Tuesday with Desoto Central was cancelled due to weather.
The Lady Tigers junior varsity team defeated the Lady Golden Wave junior varsity 3-0 on Monday.
South Panola has five games scheduled to finished up the regular season by next Friday.
