Townsend sees time for Lady Rangers

Freshman guard De’Kisha Fondon scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Northwest Mississippi Community College Lady Rangers to a decisive 94-42 victory against Bishop State in the final round of the Cardiovascular Institute Classic Nov. 4 in Summit.

Northwest fell to the host team Southwest Mississippi 72-67 on the first day of the event Nov. 3.

Fondon, of Water Valley, connected on six of eight three-point field goals and was perfect on her two free throw attempts against Bishop State.

Fondon, Brandy Fayne of Byhalia, and Tamara Wadlington of Oxford combined to score 20 of the Lady Rangers’ first 29 points as Northwest built a 29-13 lead after the first 13 minutes of the contest.

Three-pointers by Sabrina Townsend of Batesville and Ciera Thomas of Martin, Tenn., at the end of the end of the first period allowed the Lady Rangers to claim a 43-25 advantage at halftime.

Northwest kept the momentum and opened the second stanza with a 31-8 run to stretch its lead to 74-33 and cruised for the victory.

Fayne finished the contest with 13 points, while Jalisa Pointer of Coahoma added 12. Wadlington chipped in with 11 points, and Thomas added 10.

Lady Ranger forward Andrea Jansen of Hernando was the game’s top rebounder with 10, followed by Normanique Johnson who dished out nine assists.

Northwest led Southwest 41-38 at halftime, but couldn’t hold that advantage in the second period.

Pointer and Wadlington led Northwest with 14 points each, Kim Scott of Robinsonville grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

The Lady Rangers will host the Northwest Classic Nov. 10-11 at Howard Coliseum in Senatobia.
