Two Memphis-area squirrel hunters who lost their way near Hayes Crossing Saturday night honed in on the wailing sirens of law enforcement vehicles to find their way out of the woods, Panola County Sheriff Hugh “Shot” Bright said.

The hunters found themselves unable to navigate when darkness came and used a cell phone to summon help, reports said. Panola County deputies and Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, and the Corps of Engineers personnel responded to the area to help locate the missing men, Bright said.

Officers parked their emergency vehicles and sounded their sirens to give the lost men a sound to walk towards, the sheriff said. Neither hunter suffered injuries or required additional care once they found their way out of the woods.
