The South Panola Lady Tiger slowpitch softball team is 1-1 in district following Tuesday’s 7-5 win over Greenville-Weston.
The Lady Tigers lost to Grenada last Thursday 5-4 in the district opener.
South Panola looked to be in control Tuesday night with two runs in the first inning and one in the second inning for a 3-0 lead.
Greenville whisked away that notion as they scored three runs in the top of the third inning.
“This is like starting the game all over again,” Lady Tiger head coach Kim Wilson told the team.
The Lady Tigers held Greenville in the top of the fourth and fifth innings and scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead. The Lady Tigers scored one run in the bottom of the fifth for insurance, but it was not needed as Greenville only scored two more runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Christa Brown pitched the complete seven innings for the win. Greenville had 13 hits and two walks.
Leadoff batter Amanda Ivy went 2-for-4 with a double to lead the Lady Tigers at the plate. She doubled to get on base on a 1-1 pitch in the bottom of the first inning and came home on a Sally Burdette double RBI (run batted in) for the first score.
Burdette scored the second run on a fielder’s choice by Sara Cole.
In the bottom of the second inning, Marissa McDaniel walked to get on base, followed by singles by Chelsea Austin and Ivy to load the bases. Kelsay Hancock’s walk drove home McDaniel for the only run of the inning.
A series of well-placed hits got Greenville into the game in the top of the third inning. With two runners on, a single RBI scored the first runner. Then the first baseman came up and hit a two-RBI double to tie the game at three.
South Panola answered with a three-run inning of its own in the bottom of the fourth. Ivy and Hancock singled to get on base and Paige Jordan walked to load the bases. With two outs, Cole hit a two-RBI single to score the first two runners and get Jordan to third. Jennifer Newcomb came up and hit a RBI single to score Cole for the final run of the inning.
Christa Brown, who walked to get on base in the bottom of the fifth, scored the Lady Tigers’ final run. She advanced to second on a walk by Austin. Hancock hit a single to left field to drive Brown home from second.
Greenville tried to get back in the game in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Lady Tigers held strong.
Monday, the Lady Tigers defeated Rosa Fort of Tunica in non-district action 18-5.
Mary Morgan Fortune hit a grand slam. Paige Jordan and Jennifer Newcomb hit two RBI doubles.
SP varsity vs. Grenada
The game was tied at four in the bottom of the fifth on a run by Jordan and remained tied until the top of the seventh when Grenada scored.
SP JV vs. Grenada
Against Grenada last Thursday, the junior varsity Lady Tigers won 5-3. Grenada was ahead 2-0 going into the bottom of the first, but the Lady Tigers caught up and tied it on runs by Ivy and Jordan. A run by Emily Smith gave the Lady Tigers the lead 3-2. McDaniel also scored in that inning.
Hitting singles in the bottom of the fourth were Ivy, Jordan, Smith and McDaniel. Jordan scored the final run.
The Lady Tigers will play the next four games on the road beginning Tuesday at Independence. Game time is 5 p.m.
