Tigers to debut on new field with Grenada

By Angie Ledbetter
The undefeated Tigers will turn their focus toward the Grenada Chargers tonight as they play their first home game after being on the road for two weeks straight.

The Chargers come to town with a 1-1 record up against a strong 2-0 Tiger team who will be going for win No. 78 tonight.

Last week the Tigers shut out the Wildcats 34-0 and the Chargers were shut out by Tupelo 44-0. Tupelo held the Chargers to only 102 total offensive yards. The Chargers won their season opener by defeating Sheffield in Memphis 14-8.

In scoring, the Chargers average seven points in the first half and seven points in the second. On the other side of the ball, the Tigers average 14 points in the second quarter, seven in the third and six in the fourth.  The Tigers are averaging 30.5 points per game.

“Grenada struggled a little bit in the first two games,” said Tiger head Coach Lance Pogue. “They won the first game but struggled a little against Tupelo but a lot of people could do that because Tupelo is really good.

“They’re young in spots just like us but at the same time I just think they are playing hard as a team, Pogue continued. “The major thing with Grenada right now is that they’re trying to improve as a team. As far as key players, it’s not really one individual and I think it’s the same with us right now.

“Again our emphasis is to improve our team and not get too caught up in the opponent. That will be what we emphasize this week with the team.”

Head Coach Lamar Pitcock will bring his team of 60 players to Tiger Drive tonight and leading the team will be quarterback Hayden Horan. Other players who were noticed in the two previous games are David Tidwell, runningback; Ladarius Reddict, receiver; and Garrett Holland, kicker. To watch on the defense side of the ball will be Tramelle Pittman and Jamal Sims.

In last year’s match up, the Tigers defeated Grenada 41-13 and 2006 they defeated Grenada 23-6. In 2005 Tigers won 27-10 and 2004 they won 33-6.

The Tigers will debut the new turf field tonight. The new red press box will be seen and the voice of the Tigers will be heard from the home side as the Tigers kick off their first home game. The turf field construction was started in the spring and was completed in July. The north endzone bleachers will give the Tiger band a special place to sit at all the home games.

“It’s real exciting to be playing at home and we’re looking forward to being at home,” Pogue said. “With the jamboree, we’ve been on the road three weeks in a row. We’ve practiced on our new turf and excited about the opportunity to play for the first time on it and we anticipate having a big crowd.”

Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. on FM 100.5 with pregame starting at 7 p.m. with Coach Lance Pogue.

The new pressbox will be dedicated at halftime.
