Ethan Waltrip  scored on a two-out error in the bottom the sixth inning to give the Red Sox a dramatic 2-1 win over the A’s in the Batesville City League 13-15 year-old tournament Monday night.

Down to their last at bat and trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Chris Brown started the rally by reaching first on a one-out error.

Following a stolen base, Waltrip booped a RBI single to score Brown and tie the game. After Blake Snider popped up for the second out, Austin Smith hit a grounder that went past the A’s third baseman, allowing Waltrip to advance to third. A wild relay throw back into the infield got past the catcher as Waltrip raced home with the winning run.

The loss spoiled a outstanding pitching performance by the A’s Drew Hurst who took the tough-luck defeat. Hurst struck out 10 batters while giving up a pair of singles and two unearned runs in six innings of work.

Waltrip meanwhile pitched two innings in relief of Brown to record the win. Brown pitched a solid four innings on the hill, fanning seven and giving up four hits and one run along the way.

Jamie Jones plated the A’s lone run in the bottom of the first by drawing a one-out walk and later scored on a wild pitch. Taylor Rotenberry’s two singles led the A’s offensively while J.W. Willis, Hurst and Will Daugherty each had singles. Calvin Hawkins had the Sox only other hit with a second inning single.

Both teams hurt themselves on the basepaths by getting thrown out to end rallies. The Red Sox got two runners thrown out at home plate trying to score and another got caught in a rundown between third and home. The A’s meanwhile had two players get caught stealing  in the second inning.

In the late game, Colby Gammill and Chance Witten combined on a one-hitter as the Yankees pounded the Tigers 17-2 in four innings.

The Yankees sent 17 batters to the plate in a 13-run third inning to break open a tight 1-0 lead.

Gammill and Whitten each had pair of two RBI singles while Bobby Epps added a RBI double in the uprising. Hunter Ivy stroked a two RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to end the game due to the 15-run mercy rule.

Whitten and Ivy each had singles to lead the Yankees. Steven Woods doubled while Mitch Mansfield and Taylor Morris added singles in the win.

Gammill picked up the pitching win by  going three innings while Whitten towed the rubber for the final inning. Gammill fanned seven of the nine batters he faced while allowing one walk.

Gervacus Keys singled for the Tigers’ only hit. Brandon Fletcher and Keys scored the only runs in the fourth inning.
