A man who spent nearly 13 years in prison for aggravated assault on a Batesville  police officer is headed back to Parchman after a late-night robbery at Still Trailer Park Monday.

Ted Dewayne Cauthen, 28, 4651 Eureka Road, Batesville, was arrested and charged with armed robbery and has been transported back to Parchman by officials with the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

According to Det. Capt. Paul Shivers of the Batesville Police Department, Cauthen put a gun to a woman’s head and took a store deposit.

“One of the cashiers from Crowson’s Store was taking a stocker home to Still Trailer Park, and when she was rounding a curve, the suspect put a gun to her head and demanded the night’s deposit,” he said. “He used a small handgun to commit the crime.”

According to Shivers, Cauthen had been out on probation for less than three months.

“He was sentenced to 30 years as a teen for the assault of Jimmy Anthony, and only served about 12 ½ years because they said he was a model inmate,” he said.

Anthony was shot in March 1996 and badly injured by the then-15 year-old after being called to the Patton Lane area to investigate reports of a rock throwing incident.

Anthony was shot in the abdomen and was taken from South Panola Hospital to Baptist Memorial in Oxford where he was treated for the life-threatening injuries.

Because the armed robbery charge constitutes a probation violation, Cauthen will now serve the remainder of the original 30 year sentence, Shivers said.

The investigation remains open.

“We think he had some help,” he said. “At this point we don’t have any solid leads, but there could be future arrests in this case.”
