BATESVILLE–Betty Ann Bush, 64, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at her residence.

Services were Thursday at Dickins Funeral Home. Burial was in Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Pope. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Bush, born July 15, 1943, to the late William Bailey Peeples and the late Etta Mae Peeples, was a retired housekeeper for Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.R. Bush.

Survivors include: two sons, Rickey Thomas Chanton of Pope and John Wesley Bush of Horn Lake; two sisters, Loucille Moore of Pope and Eva Moore of Batesville; two brothers, William Bailey Peeples of Courtland and Thomas Samuel Peeples of Pope and four grandchildren.

BATESVILLE–Roy Clarence Chapman, 81, died Friday, April 8, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services were Thursday at New Bethlehem M.B. Church. Rev. W.L. Nash officiated. Burial was in New Bethlehem Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary had charge.

Chapman, born Nov. 26, 1926, to the late Lauffie Chapman, was a retired furniture restorer and finisher and a member of new Bethlehem M.B. Church.

Survivors include: three daughters, Barbara Chapman and Georgia Chapman, both of Batesville and Connie Bowman of East Amherst, N.Y.; four sons, Robert Chapman and Dwight Chapman, both of Batesville, Lee Walter Chapman of Chicago and John Henry Chapman of Como; two sisters, Betty Lou Ellis of Batesville and Lela Strong of Courtland; three grandchildren whom he raised, Micheauxn Chapman, Mario Chapman, Vikita Chapman and Nikita Chapman, all of Batesville; 22 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

BATESVILLE–Charles Lee Clark, 62, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at his residence.

Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Antioch M.B. Church in Courtland. Rev. Reginald Reed will officiate. Burial will be in Antioch M.B. Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and Saturday 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Antioch M.B. Church. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Clark, born Jan. 27, 1946, to the late A.C. Clark and the late Katherine Johnson Clark, was a member of Antioch M.B. Church in Courtland.

Survivors include: his companion, Mary Rudd Hines of Batesville; eight daughters, Felissa Braxton, Alisha Avant, Flecia Hines, Latasha Harris, Denise Shegog, Christina Hines, Jackie Thomas, all of Batesville and Tamara Turner of Chicago; two sons, Kelvin Hines and Carnell Butler, both of Batesville; five sisters, Warneda Jackson, Kathleen Stewart, Veara Hall, Ethel Clark and Barbere Ann Harris, all of Batesville; four brothers, A.C. Clark Jr., Calvin “Poncho” Clark and Malcolm Clark, all of Batesville and Bobby Hazes Clark of Jackson and 26 grandchildren.

 

BATESVILLE–Christine Ford, 88, died Friday, April 18, 2008, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services are Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion M.B. Church. Rev. J.N. Mobley will officiate. Burial will be in Eureka Cemetery .Visitation will be today 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Ford, born Nov. 15, 1919, in Batesville, to the late Marshall Johnson and the late Bulah Harris, was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Zion M.B. Church. She was a member of the Salome Chapter No. 58 Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include: two daughters, Annabelle Moering of Batesville and Bobbie Willis of Chicago, Ill.; two sons, James E. Ford and Carl E. Ford, both of Detroit, Mich.; four sisters, Minnie Boothe of Sardis, Lula Johnson Calvin, Effie Moore and Elnora Johnson, all of Batesville; one brother, Mack Johnson of Batesville; 22 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and a host of great-great-grandchildren.

COURTLAND–Maggie Mae Goodrum “Dity” Freeman, 91, died Friday, April 18, 2008, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services are today at noon at Coleman Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. Dr. Harry Key will officiate. Burial will be in Pope Chapel Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Freeman, born Jan. 26, 1917, to the late Odie Goodrum and the late Ethel Johnson Goodrum, was a homemaker and a member of  Coleman Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Raymell Blackmon of Arverne, N.Y.; four sons, Melvin Goodrum and Ray Freeman, both of Milwaukee, Wis., Hermon Freeman of Chicago and Larry N. Freeman of Montgomery, Ala.; two sisters, Famous Ferrell of Courtland and Alma Terry of Milwaukee, Wis.; three brothers, Willie McKinley Goodrum, James Odie Goodrum and Marcell Goodrum, all of Oakland, Calif.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

WALLS–Mollie Bell Pollan, 95, died Sunday, April 20, 2008, at her residence. She was a member of Crowder Baptist Church.

Services were Wednesday at Crowder Baptist Church.Truman Scarbrough, Bobby Waddell and Larry Kilgore officiated. Burial was in Crowder Cemetery.  Kimbro Funeral Home had charge.

Pollan was born Sept. 5, 1912.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Dock Pollan; one son, John Dock Pollan Jr.; two daughters, Loyce Mullins and Velma Garner.

Survivors include: six daughters, Joyce Jones of Walls, Shirley Holland of Walls, Katherine Smith of Walls and Phyllis Brown of Walls and Betty Hall of Cumming, Ga., Pam Walker of Rena Lara; 25 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren and many great-great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to: Crowder Cemetery Fund, Crowder Baptist Church or Unity Hospice of Olive Branch.

BATESVILLE–Louise McIntire Shields, 74, died Sunday, April 20, 2008, at University Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were Thursday at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. Kenneth Dyson, Mary Ellen Dyson and Rev. Steve Cannon officiated. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Shields, born March 9, 1934,  to the late Fred and Letha Alexander McIntire, was a member of New Life Church. She was  a graduate of Northwest Community College of Nursing and was an R.N. for Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Shields Montalvo.

Survivors include: her husband, Howard G. Shields of Batesville; one daughter, Billie Ruth Shields Collier of Horn Lake; one son, Gene Shields of Water Valley; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

COURTLAND–Emmitt G. Whitten, 93, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at his residence.

Services were Thursday at Wells Funeral Home. Burial was in Shiloh Cemetery. Rev. Terrell McGregor and Rev. Chris Wolfe officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Whitten, born Sept. 20, 1914, to the late Jody Polk and the late Lula May Williams Whitten, was a member of Tocowa Baptist Church. He was retired from Panola County as a heavy equipment operator.

He was preceded in death by: his wife, Opal Amy Cranford Whitten; two sons, Tony Whitten and Gordon Whitten; one daughter, Carolyn Whitten; two brothers, Buster Whitten and Roy Whitten and three sisters, Audrey Whitten, Nettie Hawkins and Pauline.

Survivors include: one sister, Inez Whitten Sweeny of Forrest City, Ark.; three grandchildren, Larissa and Terissa of Courtland and Samantha of Olive Branch and three great-grandchildren, Bailey, Chloe’, Noah, Levi and Keifer.
