 The MSPA District 1-A baseball tournament action was started on Monday at Delta Academy to get some results to finalize the season.  The tournament is being played due to weather conditions putting a halt to several games.

In Monday’s action, Desoto defeated Marvell and Delta defeated West Memphis to advance to play on Tuesday in the winner’s bracket for the top two teams in the district.

Tunica No. 1 seeded in the district defeated Desoto 2-1 in the first game on Tuesday and the Green Wave beat Delta 2-1 also in the second game. Marvell and Delta both won in the lower bracket to advance on Thursday.

The Green Wave were scheduled to play Tunica Thursday but with inclement on the way the game was delayed until today at 1 p.m.

 Delta and Marvell will play at 3:30 p.m. At 6 p.m the loser of the game between the Green Wave and Tunica will play the winner of the game between Marvell and Delta.

The games will be continued on Monday.

Monday’s action will determine the district winner. The first game will be played at 3:30 and if that does not determine the winner, a second game will be played at 6.

In the game between the Wave and Raiders on Tuesday, the Wave started the ball action in the field. Sophomore Geri Lamm went to the mound for the Wave. Josh Garrott put first stop to Raiders by catching a line drive, Austin Gant caught a pop fly, and Garrott finished it with another catch. The Wave went three up three down to finish the first inning.

Seth Barnett started the second inning by catching a fly ball to left field for the Raiders’ first out followed by Gant fielding a grounder for the second one. The next batter got a double but Bailey Guckert ended any chance of the Raiders scoring when the batter grounded out to him and he made a sharp throw to first for the third out.

The bottom of the second inning proved to be big for the Wave. Bateman Greenlee led off with a double and Chase Bruce came in as pinch runner.

The next batter was struck out but Seth Barnett came to the plate, singled and brought Bruce in for first run of game.

Barnett stole second and Britt Lawrence singled. Gant walked to load the bases. Guckert came to the plate hoping to make something happen for the Wave.

With a single to right field, Guckert drove home Barnett for the second run of the night and the last score of the game. Next two batters were struck out to end the inning with Wave on top 2-0.

The Raiders were able to score one run in the top of the fourth. Lamm struck out the pitcher but the shortstop singled and stole his way to third while the catcher was at bat. The pitcher came home for the Raiders’ only run of the game on a single RBI.

The fourth inning was the last inning to see a score.  

Geri Lamm fanned six strike outs in the game for the Wave. The Green Wave won 2-1 to advance to play Tunica.

“This win puts us in a good position,” said Head coach David Hardy. “I told the guys because of some of the circumstances that we didn’t go into it making any excuses. We had one of our regular starters who was ill and unable to play. We rallied behind that thought and really played the best defensive games of the season. Geri Lamm pitched as good as I’ve seen him pitch in awhile and we made plays behind him.”

Tunica defeated North Delta last week 15-13.

“But we both made a lot of errors,” Hardy said. “We made a few more than they did that day. They’re a good ball club or they wouldn’t be seated No. 1 in the district. We just have to play our ball game and play well and we’ll have a good chance.”
