North Panola Lady Cougars fall to Franklin County;
South Panola baseball and softball teams prevail

The North Panola Lady Cougars tried, but could not contain the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs Tuesday in the first round of the MHSAA/Cellular South State Basketball Championship Tournament.

The Lady Cougars fell 61-43. Though Lady Cougar Audrey Taylor led the team with 18 points, Jenisha Jackson and Catonya Newsom were held scoreless by the Lady Dawgs’ pressure defense.

Also scoring for North Panola were Britany Patton, 14 points and Shaveeta Gordon, 11 points. The Lady Cougars end the season 16-20.

South Panola Baseball

The South Panola Diamond Tigers and Lady Tigers traveled to Cleveland Tuesday to take on the Indian teams.

 In baseball, the Tigers (3-2) downed the Indians16-2 in five innings. The Tigers scored 10 runs in the top of the fourth. They got 12 hits in the game.

Whit Whitten got the win. Read Hatcher took the loss for Cleveland. Ethan Bright, Wesley Gregg and David Renfroe hit doubles for the Tigers. Getting multiple hits were Bright, three; Joseph Blair, two and Tyler Benson, three.

The Tigers will be home Friday to host Olive Branch in non-district action beginning at 5 p.m. with the junior varsity game.

South Panola Fastpitch

The South Panola Lady Tigers went 5-0 on the season after an 8-1 win over Cleveland. They got 13 hits in the game.

Whitney Kiihnl got her fifth win and Emily Hatcher took the loss for Cleveland.

Casi Brooks hit a double and Stormy Robinson hit a triple for the Lady Tigers. Getting multiple hits for the Lady Tigers were Brooks, three; Kiihnl, two; and Haylei Plummer, two.

The Lady Tigers are gearing up for their Strikeout for Cancer event to be held in conjunction with the game against Grenada Friday afternoon. The game starts at 6 p.m. following the junior varsity game. Proceeds from the gates and concessions will go to the American Cancer Society.
