SARDIS–Zye Chestnut, 95, died January 19, 2008 at his residence. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 26 at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Green M.B. Church in Sardis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mr. Chestnut was born February 2, 1912 in Sardis to the late Jessie Chestnut and Minnie Dunson. He was a railroad worker and belonged to Pleasant Green Church, where he was the senior member and served on the deacon board. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include his stepson Nathanial Williams of Tallulah, La.; his son Floyd Williams of Chicago; his sisters Rose Lee Ruffin of Birmingham and Vera Dixion of Chicago; four grandchildren, eight great- grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren.

BATESVILLE – Diane Trammell Flowers, 53, died Monday, January 21, 2008 at Baptist Memorial Hospital East in Memphis.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on January 26 at Mt. Gillion M. B. Church. Rev. Joe Wayne Blackburn will officiate. Burial will be at West Camp Cemetery in Batesville.

Visitation will be today, January 25 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and Saturday, January 26 from 10-11 a.m. at Mt. Gillion M. B. Church.

Ms. Flowers was born October 28, 1954 in Sardis to David and Julie Mae Hightower Trammell. She was disabled and was a member of Morris Chapel M. B. Church in Sardis.

Along with her husband, Herman Flowers, survivors include her daughter Metrica M. Spears of Memphis and her son Dewaune Flowers of Batesville; her parents David and Julia Tramell of Sardis; four sisters, Betty Jean Trammell of Sardis, Daisy Dale and Debra Dowden of Memphis, and Sophia Ward of Grandview, Mo.; and four brothers, Terry Trammell, Perry Trammell, Jerry Trammell, and David Lee Trammell, all of Sardis.

BATESVILLE – John David “Jr.” Houston Jr., 65, died Saturday, January 19, 2008 in Charleston.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on January 26, 2008 at Batesville Intermediate School Auditorium. Rev. Richard Brown will officiate. Burial will be at Eureka Cemetery in Batesville.

Visitation will be today, January 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and Saturday, January 26 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Batesville Intermediate School Auditorium.

Mr. Houston was born March 4, 1942 to John David Houston and Mattie Lee Austin in Batesville. He was greenskeeper for Panola Country Club and was a member of Mt. Zion M. B. Church.

Along with his wife Betty Jean Houston, survivors include his son John L. Bobo and three daughters, Lois Bobo, Jamie Bobo of Batesville, and Sonya Stanford of Memphis; six sisters, Eunice Henderson, Virgie Hamilton, Colteen Houston of Batesville, Shirley Pomlee and Sarah Houston of Water Valley, and Annie Ruth Harris of Memphis; and three brothers, Johnny Houston of Batesville and Robert Earl Houston and James Houston of Memphis; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

COMO–Russell Vaughn, 88, died January 18, 2008 at his residence. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 24, at Cistern Hill M.B. Church in Como. The Rev. Cedric Richards officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Henderson Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Born June 27, 1919 in Mississippi, Mr. Vaughn was the son of the late Felix and Lou Ware Vaughn. He was a retired truck driver and a member of Cistern Hill Church.

Survivors include his wife Effie Vaughn of Como; three daughters, Maurice Martin and Mary Moody of Batesville and Lue Bertha Jones of Como; and one grandson.

MARKS – Herman Laverne West, 58, died Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on January 26 at Calvary Baptist Church. Ernest Gordon and Richard West will officiate. Burial will be at Marks Cemetery.

Visitation is today, January 25 from 6-8 p.m. at Kimbro Funeral Home.

Born April 6, 1949 in Marks, Mr. West retired from factory work at Emhart Corporation. A member of Calvary Baptist Church, he was a licensed lay minister and church song director.

Along with his wife, Linda West of Marks, survivors are his two sons, Richard West of Horn Lake and Brandon West of Marks; his daughter, Wendy Beard of Pope; his mother, Lorene Morgan of Marks; four brothers, Terry West, Wesley West, and Glen Morgan all of Marks and Jesse Wayne West of Los  Angeles, Calif.; three sisters, Geneva West and Connie Howell of Horseshoe, Ark., and Pam Yates of Pontotoc;  and five grandchildren.

Mr. West was preceded in death by his father, Dewey Laverne West and his daughter, Mary Jane West.
