Tigers face Starkville ‘dunkfest’ in district loss

If the South Panola Tigers do not find a way to contain Starkville in the first game of the district tournament next Tuesday, their season will be over.

The Tigers lost to Starkville 57-39 in the final district game of the season Friday. The Tigers are winless in district and the No. 4 seed.

In order for the Tigers to continue to play, they have to take down the Yellowjackets in the first round of the tournament.

“We could not matchup with them,” said Tiger head coach Charlie Howard. “It was a dunkfest.”

Antonio Allen led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points, followed by Michael Broadnax with 11.

“Antonio couldn’t get a shot off,” Howard said.

The Tigers were limited to four points in the first quarter and down 30-16 at the half.

Kuane Lanier led Starkville in scoring with 10 points. Nine other Yellowjackets contributing to the score.

The Tigers will be in non-conference action the final two games of the regular season. Tonight they will be at Independence.

Friday, the Tigers will host Clarksdale during senior night and where the British Broadcasting Communication (BBC) will tape the game. The BBC is following the Clarksdale basketball team and doing a segment on Delta basketball.

The game will air on the history channel.

Tipoff is following the girls game at 6 p.m.
