South Panola tennis team participates in state tournament

The South Panola tennis team had a good showing at the state tournament held in Jackson Monday and Tuesday.

Three of the teams made it to the second round.

“I am so proud they got this far,” said tennis head coach Kim Wilson.

Grant Goforth faced his first loss of the season in the second round of the tournament Monday afternoon falling to Sean Robinson of Hancock, 6-4, 6-4. Goforth defeated Patrick Pierce of Clinton in the first round 6-2, 6-1.

In girls singles, Regina Rehorosvka defeated Mary L. Hanna of Oak Grove in the opening round, 6-3, 6-3, but fell to Allison Hartman of Northwest Rankin, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round. Hartman lost in the championship round to Catherine Holliday of Tupelo, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Also advancing to the second round was the girls doubles team of Marlee Goforth and Ashley Roberson. They defeated Taylor Burley and Brittney DeCamp of Northwest Rankin, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. In the second round, Goforth and Roberson lost to the eventual state champions, Julia Breuer and Emily Scheuer of Tupelo, 6-2, 6-1.

The mixed doubles team and the boys doubles team of South Panola fell in the first round.

In mixed doubles Blake Goodwin and Alyssa Boren fell 2-6, 0-6 to Evan Tyler and Caroline McCormick of Pascagoula.

The boys doubles team of Manuel Henrick and Roy Lozano lost 1-6, 1-6 to David Bella and Chris Blevens of Ocean Springs.
