Batesville attorney David Walker was appointed by the court to serve as Edwards’ council during the upcoming trial process. His bond is set at $30,000.

Possession
Nicholas Roebuck entered a guilty plea to possession of marijuana, but pleaded not guilty to DUI-other substance.

Ronald Lantern of the Mississippi Highway Patrol was present with prosecutor Gaines Baker to present the state’s case on the DUI.

"I was working another incident when Mr. Roebuck came through," Lantern said. "I could smell an odor."

"What kind of odor was it," Baker asked the state’s witness. "Was it cabbage cooking or was it marijuana."

Lantern said the odor was marijuana and that Roebuck had admitted to smoking earlier in the evening.

Baker asked if Lantern had been trained to notice signs of people under the influence of marijuana.

"He had red eyes and was really laid back," Lantern replied.

Roebuck was then given a chance to tell his side of the story.

"I was coming down the road and thought it was a road block, so I slowed down and then went on," he said. "When I noticed the blue lights, I stopped."

Roebuck was found guilty and given 30 days to pay a fine of $751.

"You need to recognize that marijuana is a gateway drug and a good way to start having more problems," Baker said.

Simple Assault
Melvin Fonville was found guilty of simple assault and ordered to pay fines totalling $262 after Latasha Hibbler told the judge what happened.

"We used to go together," she said. "He went over to my mama’s house and then followed me."

Hibbler said he showed a gun and hit the windows of her car.

"When I went over there, it was just to talk to her," Fonville said. I never hit the windows or pointed a gun. She was out of the truck when I got there."

"So, you think she just made all of this up?" Baker asked.

In addition to the fine, Fonville was sentenced to 30 days suspended sentence.

Antown Webb pleaded guilty to simple assault and malicious mischief and was ordered to pay a fine of $778. He also received 30 days suspended sentence and was ordered to pay $223 in restitution for property damage.

Truancy
Alma Powers appeared before the judge to face charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor for failing to make sure her son was attending school.

North Panola Truancy Officer Charles Blakely told the judge that Candaris Reeves had missed 13 days of school in the past few months.

"He hasn’t missed that many days that I know of," she replied.

She was fined $262 and ordered to make sure her son was attending school.

Sherry Nunally was given another chance to make sure her twin sons are attending school after revealing that they had been attending regularly until she "got sick and had a stroke."

"I ask, under these circumstances, that the charges against the mother remain remanded," Baker said.

Baker asked Nunally to provide him with medical records before he presents the boys’ case in youth court.
