Accused armed robber waives hearing in Batesville Municipal Court
By Jason C. Mattox

Michael Taylor, 357 Greg Taylor Rd., Courtland, implicated in two armed robberies in Batesville last week, waived his preliminary hearing in Batesville Municipal Court on Wednesday and had his case bound over to the Panola County Grand Jury.

Taylor was arrested in Memphis last weekend after armed robberies at the Exxon station on Highway 6 August 16 and at Tobacco World on August 17. He remains incarcerated at the David Bryan Justice Complex. His bond is $1 million.

Also referred to the grand jury by Municipal Judge Bill McKenzie was Christopher Key, 577-B Harmon Rd., Batesville, charged with burglary, grand larceny and trespassing.

The grand jury will also consider the case of Micheauxn Chapman, 315-A Butler Rd., Batesville charged with felony fleeing, driving while license suspended and careless driving.

In other cases, Judge McKenzie dismissed a malicious mischief charge filed against Sandra Cauthen after the affiant, her son-in-law Fredrick Barnes, failed to prove his case.

Barnes claimed that Cauthen was responsible for slashing a tire on his ’93 Buick Century on Sunday August 6.

"I had went outside to put a pen in the car, and all the tires were fine," he said. "Then I came back out and one was cut."

Barnes also alleged that Cuthen cut two tires on her daughter’s car.

"I went out back and started looking for evidence and I found a knife and a crack pipe," he said.

Judge William McKenzie asked how this meant Cauthen was guilty.

"I saw her cut my tires," he said.

"You didn’t mention that before," the judge replied. "If you saw her, why didn’t you try to stop her?"

"I was afraid she might try to cut me," Barnes said.

Cauthen denied cutting the tires.

"He told officer Ryan Koehn that he didn’t see me cut the tires," she said.

"So, now he’s going to lie so you will buy him a new tire?" McKenzie asked.

McKenzie dismissed the case.
