Court Report
Playing in car results in guilty verdict, no fine for youngster
By Emily Williams

A Batesville woman was found guilty of disorderly conduct during Batesville Municipal Court Wednesday.

Gwendolyn Haynes, 209 Lester St., Batesville, told Judge Bill McKenzie she was guilty of carrying a concealed weapon, but said she did not fail to comply with Officer Ruby Myers’ orders while in the Batesville Police Department.

Myers testified that Haynes was in the police station with a friend who had been served a warrant for arrest.

"She (Haynes) left her purse in the police station lobby and when I opened it to check for identification, I saw a weapon," said Myers.

Myers said that is when she tried to arrest Haynes.

"She started screaming and Detective Paul Shivers had to help me," said Myers.

Detective Paul Shivers testified that he heard Haynes screaming from his office and he saw Myers telling Haynes to stop resisting.

"I told her to call my doctor because I am claustrophobic," said Haynes.

She was fined a total of $1,110 for carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct-failure to comply.

Iantea Lee, Northpark #38, Batesville, was found guilty of no driver’s license.

Lee, a juvenile, had pleaded not guilty, saying she and her cousin were playing in a friend’s car when they accidentally knocked the car out of gear.

Officer Bryan Koehn said he responded to a call about an accident at Northpark Apartments.

"She admitted to me at the time that she was the driver," said Koehn.

Judge McKenzie found Lee guilty, but didn’t impose a fine.

"You need to learn at a young age that you are responsible for your mistakes," the judge said.

Reginald Henderson, 112 Williams St., Batesville, was transported from the Panola County Sheriff’s Department so he could appear in court for shoplifting charges.

Henderson walked in and said, "I will plead guilty. I don’t have any shoes on and my feet are cold."

Henderson was already serving time for other charges and was fined $610 and transported back to jail.

Ashley McClary, 299 Lisa, Madison, was referred to the grand jury for possession of controlled substance and possession of marijuana less than an ounce.

Anita Tidwell, 367 S. Church St., Jonestown, was referred to the grand jury for forged prescription.

Contempt of court
Shane Beavers, 1260 Harmon Rd., Batesville, faced old fines of $1,762 that have been due since March 2006 and a new charge of no driver’s license.

Beavers had been in front of the judge before for not having a driver’s license.

"I have never had a driver’s license," said Beavers.

Judge McKenzie told Beavers to have the fines paid in full within 60 days and to also obtain a valid license.

Tiffany Heffner, 4726 Pleasant Grove, Como, had old fines of $747 that have been due since September 2005.

The docket read that she was given six months suspended jail sentence to serve for failure to pay fines as ordered in court November 2005 with total fines due in full December 2005. Heffner failed to pay any of the old fines.

Heffner told the judge she had a job and could pay the fines.

"You have wasted enough of this court’s time," said Judge McKenzie.

She was transported back to jail. If Heffner pays the old fines she can be released.

Patrick Lewis, 5103 Old Panola, Sardis, had old fines of $575 that have been due since April 2004 and a new charge of no driver’s license.

His total fines were $931.

He enrolled in the city’s work release program for 23 days and has six months jail time suspended, providing he completes the work program.

Tyrone Griffin, 6758 Curtis Rd., Batesville, entered the city’s work release program for 11 days instead of paying an old fine of $451, due since December 2005.

Johnny Jackson, Skyline, Batesville, failed to appear for the third time for charges of domestic violence-simple assault.
