Jon Michael Ware (right) receives the inaugural Brandon Presley Memorial Award from North Delta head coach Richard Russo for exemplary play during spring practice and the jamboree last Thursday night. |
Jon Michael Ware, a junior football player at North Delta School, has won the inaugural Brandon Presley Memorial Spring Football Award.
The award was created in memory of Brandon Presley who was an alumnus of North Delta School and its football program.
Presley gave his life while defending the United States in the Middle East as a member of the United States Marine Corps.
Head coach Richard Russo said this about the award.
"This award was created because Brandon’s character, patriotism and Green Wave spirit should be remembered and honored," Russo said. "He paid the ultimate sacrifice while defending our great nation and put others before himself. The concept of this award is a ‘Team Before Me’ attitude. We want the player who sells out to lead this team to win the award each spring."
The Presley Award winner has to meet stiff criteria. First, the player must be present at all spring football practices and the jamboree. Next, he must exhibit leadership qualities by being exemplifying hard work, dedication, determination, character and spirit.
At the conclusion of the spring jamboree the North Delta coaching staff votes on the award by secret ballot. The winner’s name will go on a permanent plaque in the North Delta fieldhouse where names will be added annually. The winner will also receive a plaque at the fall sports banquet at North Delta school.
Jon Michael Ware is the son of Don and Alecia Ware of Batesville. Ware, who will be a senior football player at North Delta during the fall 2006 season, wears No. 55 and plays offensive guard and outside linebacker. He is a three-year player at North Delta and lettered in 2005. His previous football awards are 2005 honorable mention All-District guard and 2005 honorable mention All-District inside linebacker.
After Ware received the phone call that he was the award’s recipient, he said, "You don’t know what it means to me to be selected by the coaching staff to win this award. I am ready to do whatever is asked of me in the fall to make sure this team goes as far as possible." |
