Self is out of jail on bond.

In other police department matters:
BPD investigators are looking for information regarding the theft of eight NASCAR jackets from Williams Department Store last Monday.
Det. George Williford said the jackets retailed for $130 each.
"Anyone who may have purchased one of these jackets (from an individual) is encouraged to contact the police department," Williford said. "We are offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the thief."

Nicholas Butler and Shermaine "Redman" Clemmons have been arrested and charged for their involvement in the armed robbery of a Pepsi representative making a night deposit at First Security Bank in October.
"We have had a lot of robberies recently," Col. Tony Jones said. "The people of this city should be proud of the two detectives who have worked hard to make sure all of the cases are solved."

Anyone with information about any of these cases is asked to contact the BPD at 563-5653.

Department of Human Services sponsoring Christmas Wishes
By Jason C. Mattox

In an effort to provide as many children as possible with a merry Christmas, the Mississippi Department of Human Services, Panola County Division of Family and Children’s Services will sponsor "Christmas Wishes for Children."

"Wishes" is a program DHS started to provide Christmas joy to underprivileged children, DHS representative Diane Davis said.

"During last year’s drive, nearly 300 children in Panola County received gifts," she said.

Davis said money for the gifts comes to DHS in the form of donations from both businesses and individuals in the community.

"We would like to see people and businesses throughout Panola County come together to make this project a success," she said. "This provides a great opportunity for clubs, church groups, businesses or individuals to help a child have a Merry Christmas."

In addition to offering donations to help fund the project, DHS also wants people to contact them if they know of people in need.

"If there is anyone out there that knows of a child or a family who cannot provide anything extra for their children at Christmas, we want people to make us aware," Davis said. "If we don’t get a call about them, we can’t make sure they have a good Christmas like they should."

For more information or to suggest a child or family who might need assistance, contact Davis or Rhonda Jones at 487-2098.

Better Than Ezra appears this week
By Jason C. Mattox

College and Top 40 radio mainstays Better Than Ezra will take the stage at the Batesville Civic Center Thursday night along with Memphis-based Ingram Hill.

BTE, a New Orleans-based band, is comprised of Tom Drummond, Travis McNabb and Kevin Griffin, and recently released its first new studio album since 2001 with the May release of "Before the Robots."

Until breaking to record the new material, the band had been on tour to promote its 2001 release "Closer" which featured what could be the band’s most successful song since 1998’s number one hit "Good," "Desperately Wanting."

"Before the Robots" is the band’s fifth studio album and its first on the Artemis Records label.

The album features 13 tracks including the band’s current radio hit "A Lifetime."

Joining the band on stage will be Memphis favorites Ingram Hill who, just a few short years ago, were opening up for Sister Hazel during shows at the New Daisy Theater on Beale Street.

Since that time, Ingram Hill has had its music featured prominently on 94.1 FM The Buzz in Memphis.

Ingram Hill has released two albums "Until Now," and its most recent release "Jane’s Picture Show."

Both albums contain versions of the group’s two biggest hits; "Almost Perfect" and "Will I Ever Make It Home."

The latter of those two tunes was featured on the soundtrack to Jennifer Garner’s 2004 hit film "13 Going on 30."

Tickets for the event are still available. Cost is $25 per seat. All seating is general admission.

Classmates of ’73 now serving in Iraq’s class of ’05

(Editor’s Note: 1973 South Panola High School grad Barbara Deloach has been keeping up with classmates who are currently serving in Iraq, and she sent in the following report.)

By Barbara Deloach

Three members of the SPHS Class of ’73 had no idea that 32 years after graduation they would find themselves in a strange country, with the same purpose: serving their country. Stationed in various cities in Iraq, Sgt. 1st Class Jerry Lewis Mitchell, Staff Sgt. Harry Sanford and Sgt. 1st Class Larry Young are being missed so much by the Class of ’73 and their families.

Larry Young is presently serving at FOB Dogwood, Iraq as a mortar track commander. He has been awarded the Combat Infantry Badge. Young has served our country for 22 years.

He enlisted in the Army on May 14, 1973, just one or two days after graduation. He received his training at Fort Jackson, S.C. and Fort Stewart, Georgia.

After his training he was assigned to HHC 1/181 Armor and HHC 2/5 Armor at Fort Hood, Texas, where he served for three years. Upon completion of his duties there he was released with an honorable discharge.

In 1986 he joined the National Guard’s Troop B 1/108TH Armored Cavalry in Batesville where he served as a 11C mortarman until being deployed to Iraq with the 155 Infantry of the 155 Brigade Combat Team.

Young sent a greeting to his classmates and he sends all of his love to his family.

Jerry Lewis Mitchell has served 32 consecutive years in the military and is presently serving our country in Iraq with the 1/198th Armor, FOB Hotel, Iraq, HHC 150th Engineers, FOB Dogwood, Iraq, 106th Forward Support Battalion, FOB Duke Iraq, all under the 155BCT Brigade from the state of Mississippi.

Mitchell enlisted in the military Oct. 17, 1973, five months after graduation, and was trained at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. and Fort Ord, Calif.

From there he went to Southeast Asia where he served with the 833 Ordnance Co. and then came back to Fort Ord, Calif. and served with the 3/32 Infantry Brigade.

Mitchell finished that tour of duty and returned home to Batesville where he joined the National Guard’s 1/108th Armor Cavalry in Batesville .

Mitchell has served there for approximately 22 years. Next, he was attached to Alpha Company 2/198th in Oxford where he presently serves.

He is a Vietnam era vet, an Operation Iraqi Freedom vet, and a SFOR 10 vet, having served in Bosnia.

Mitchell sent home this message: "I have had great fun and if I had to do it again I wouldn’t hesitate. I love my country and all of those that live in it.

"Thanks a lot for my loving family throughout the years especially to my dear Mom. Also a BIG hello to all my co-workers and friends at Crown Cork and Seal, Inc. of Batesville, and to the great class of 1973 of SPHS and to the loving members of New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church and Sandy Springs A.M.E. Zion Church."

Mitchell is the son of Maisy Mitchell and J.T. Thornton of Batesville.

He married SPHS graduate Nancy Nash-Mitchell. He is the son-in-law of Reverend Walter Nash Sr. and Mrs. Nina Belle Nash of Batesville.

Harry Sanford is now serving in Al Isandersriya, Iraq, with the 155th Combat Infantry Team as a mortar platoon sergeant.

Sanford joined in Batesville after graduation from SPHS in 1973. He took his training as an armor crewman in Fort Knox, Ky.

In his 31 years of service, he has had two temporary service duties in Garwin Field, Boise, Idaho, and duty at Ft. Benning, Ga., in support of troops going to Bosnia.

Sanford said his decision to join the Army was one of his best. He said he takes much pride in the many places he has visited by way of the military that would not have been possible otherwise.

"I have been adding up the pro and cons of being here," Sanford said in a message home. "Crime rate, high gas prices, floods/hurricanes are part of life in the U.S., the same as here," Here in Iraq, one of your main jobs is to stay alive. So I guess it evens out."

With his laptop computer, Sanford keeps in contact with family and friends. He always ends his communication with his signature, "IN SERVICE OF AMERICA."

Harry is the son of T.Q. and Virgil Sanford of Courtland. He is married to Dorothy Fields-Sanford of Brownsville, Tenn. He has four children; two boys and two girls.

Road work requests mostly filled
Panola County Road Manager Lygunnah Bean reported 40 of 56 road maintenance requests for work during October had been totally or partially completed.

Requests for gravel, surface treatment, re-seal and asphalt for other roads for the month of November were partially completed, but Bean was looking for a direction of where and how much.

"If y’all say fix ’em, I’ll fix ’em. It don’t take nothing but money for me (to move forward with pending road overlay projects)," Bean told Supervisors.

"That’s a board decision that you will have to make," Bean added.

Board members were reminded that bids will be taken December 12 to level and overlay approximately seven miles of Eureka Road in Districts Three and Four.

Board members also voted to authorize the Road Department to deliver one-half load of white rock to the City of Como.
