City Court Report

Video game thief found guilty in Municipal Court; must shell out $610 fine

A Batesville man was found guilty of taking seven video games from Shell gas station in Batesville Municipal Court Wednesday.

Judge Bill McKenzie heard testimonies from both the affiant, Derrick Conner, and the defendant, Darrell Chambers of 1169 Heafner Rd., Batesville.

Conner told the judge that he let Chambers on previous occasions "hang out in the store."

Chambers was fined $610 and is also incarcerated at the Panola County Sheriff"s Department for charges of petit larceny and burglary. A trial date was set for Wednesday, October 26 for those charges.

Shoplifting
Shamameeka Brooks of 819 Goodwin St., Crenshaw, was fined $610 for taking three cds worth $39.64 from Wal-Mart.

Judge McKenzie told Brooks, "Stealing is wrong and if you steal again prepare to serve the time."

Mark Pearson of 508 Mary Ann Cove, Oxford, had a felony shoplifting case continued.

Simple assault
Krystal Tucker of 209 Court St., Batesville, was charged with simple assault against affiant Jennifer Denley. Tucker paid her fine of $265 in full prior to court.

Other
Ronnie House of 339 Hays St., Batesville, faced contempt of court charges stemming from old fines of $557, due since September of 2004. He is also incarcerated for possession of controlled substance (crack cocaine), a charge that will be heard in circuit court. Judge McKenzie said if he makes bond he can enter in the city’s work release program for 14 days in lieu of paying his old fines.

Contempt of court
Willie Reeves Jr. of 4537 Curtis Rd., Batesville, had a charge of contempt of court-old fines of $510 (due since June of 2005) continued because he is on hold for justice court.

Alma Reeves of 1053 Hawkins Rd., Courtland, was sentenced to 60 days in jail after failing to pay her old fines of $262 that have been due since February of 2005 and failing to follow court orders to work for the city’s work release program for seven days.
 
Reeves didn’t show much emotion when Judge McKenzie asked her, "Do you think we are just playing games?"

Judge McKenzie also told her she could have avoided going to jail if she had just worked the seven days on the work program.

Russell Fondren of 1269 Tom Cooper Rd., Batesville, faced charges of contempt of court for old fines of $760 due since March of 2005. Fondren told Judge McKenzie that he had given the money to his fiancee to pay the fine, but it never got paid. He also informed the judge that he no longer had a fiancee. Judge McKenzie told him to pay the full amount within 30 days or do 90 days in jail.

Trespassing
Stephen Finch of Pearl St., Batesville, was found guilty of trespassing on Zelma Finch’s property. He was sentenced to eight days in jail which he had served awaiting trial.

DUI refusal
Kevin Gay of 106 Holly Cove, Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to DUI-refusal and a trial date was set for November 23.

Failure to appear
Galon Shorter of 701 S. Pocahontas, Sardis, failed to appear for charges of DUI-refusal, no proof of insurance and old fines of $344 that have been due since April of 1998. Al Williams bonding company was notified.

Bobby D. Johnson of 522 Gleeton Rd., Pope, failed to appear for contempt of court-old fines of $459 that have been due since May of 2005. Alright bonding company was notified.

Cases dismissed
Terry Osborn of 182-A Rudd Rd., Sardis, had a simple assault charge dismissed after affiant Prentiss Mitchell agreed to drop the charges.

Cecil P. Henderson of 115 Jackson St., Batesville also had a simple assault charge dismissed after affiant Carla Hamilton failed to appear to prosecute.
Kemp Blackmon of 226 Noble St., Batesville, had a simple assault charge dismissed after affiant Trinette Smith failed to appear to prosecute.

Issac Draper of 83 Fudgetown Rd., Sardis, had a simple assault by threat charge dismissed after affiant David Howell failed to appear.

Stephanie Lang of 210 Pearson St., Batesville, had a petit larceny charge dismissed after affiant Jeannie Tomlin failed to appear to prosecute.

Tickets
Frank Griffin of 2446 Barnacre Rd., Batesville, was fined $356 for driving while license suspended.

Donell R. Benson of 200-C Leonard St., Batesville, was fined $281 for no driver’s license.

Amos A. Davis of 900 Levee Rd., Crowder, had a lower fine of $95 imposed for expired tag and a lower fine of $183 imposed for no proof of insurance. He provided proof of both insurance and a valid tag after he received the ticket.

Gloria A. Harrison, 5419 Nash Rd., Batesville, had a trial date set for November 9 after entering a not guilty plea to no child restraint. She said it wasn’t her child and the other person in the vehicle was holding the one-year-old child.

Christy Moudy of 2788 Barnacre Rd., Batesville, was fined $131 for no child restraint.

Kenneth M. Smith of 218 Dora St., Batesville, was fined $1,123 for old fines and no proof of insurance.
Stephanie Joiner Shorter, 329 Martin Luther King Blvd., Batesville, was fined $864 for no driver’s license and no proof of insurance.

Alexander Mister of 1838 Cottonplant Rd., Batesville, was fined $601 for driving while license suspended.

Jason A. Key of 4851 Old Panola Rd., Batesville, was fined $601 for driving while license suspended (implied consent).

Jesse Turner Jr. of 218 Pearson St., Batesville, was fined $131 for no child restraint.

Curtis D. Lyle of 405-A Armstrong St., Batesville, was fined $323 for expired driver’s license and no proof of insurance. His fine was reduced after he provided proof of insurance and a valid driver’s license after he got the ticket.
