Moss Point (1-1) has had a rocky season so far. They were scheduled to play Hattiesburg Friday but that game was canceled due to travel and weather concerns of Hurricane Rita, so both teams are probably rested for this game.

The game between South Panola and Moss Point was originally scheduled for September 2 but was postponed due to damage by Hurricane Katrina.

The two Tiger teams have not met since 2002.

Friday, South Panola will travel to Horn Lake to start what is commonly known in football as "the second season," the district season.

Kickoff in Horn Lake is 7 p.m.

Directions to Moss Point: Take I-55 South to Jackson. Take the US-49 South to Hattiesburg. In Hattiesburg take the Highway 98 exit (Moss Point/Lucedale) to Highway 63. Take Moss Point exit onto I-105 West. Take Exit 68 to Hwy 613, Turn right onto Danztler Road and follow the Tigers Paws into stadium.

ND emerges victorious from battle with Winston
By Angie Ledbetter

While some teams in South Mississippi and Louisiana were still not playing football due to Rita, a second hurricane, the Green Wave were in action in Louisville.

The Green Waves were battling it out against a historically fine 2A Winston Academy team. The Green Waves got back in the winning column as they defeated the Winston Patriots 28-8.

The Green Waves dominated the game in rushing yards with 350 to the Patriot’s 189.

The Green Wave accounted for 65 of the 128 penalty yards.

According to Green Wave head football coach Rick Johnston, some of the penalties were just hustling penalties as usual for his Green Wave team.

The Green Wave team was much improved this week as far as turnovers. They finished the night with no turnovers. For this game, the Green Waves were on the other side of the turnovers and they benefited from them. The Patriots had 2 interceptions and 1 fumble for the night.

To get back to winning, Johnston said the team "got at each other pretty good on Monday and Tuesday."

He said Monday was one of the most physical practices they had had in awhile.

"We moved a bunch of guys around this week on the defensive side," Johnston said. "I think we had only one kid that played in the same spot that he started in the Magnolia Heights game the week before. I thought that the effort was a whole lot better."

Mostly, North Delta had everybody playing and doing what they were supposed to do, according to Johnston.

"Our offensive line really stepped up the game Friday night," Johnston said. "It was by far the best game offensively that we have had straight across the line and that was good to see. That group is finally coming together. They are just a really young group and it just takes a little time."

Senior running back Dustin Maples finished the game with 210 yards on 30 carries with two touchdowns.

"He had a big night," said Johnston. "We played Dakota Mabry back there at the tailback and he had some nice runs. You can go with quickness with Dustin or you can go with the powerback with running behind Patrick Ellis and I think that it is a good one-two punch."

Dakota Mabry had 76 yards on 13 carries. Patrick Ellis had 32 yards on two carries with one touchdown. Forrest Wilbanks had eight carries for 29 yards with one touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, Heath Reed and Patrick Ellis each had one interception.

Jon Michael Ware was moved to inside linebacker, where he had been the backup guy there for about two years. Ware registered 14 solo tackles and three or four assists.

"Jon Michael had a big, big night for us," Johnston said. "I was very pleased with the effort. I thought that Christian Amberson and Forrest Wilbanks were real solid at the defensive ends. I thought that we got some good plays from out of our tackles. We played a bunch of people in there and those people are getting better and better every week.

"It was a team effort," Johnston continued. "We had two new corners in there. We moved Evan West back to corner where I think is his natural position."

West had a couple of pass breakups and did a good job not of letting anybody behind him all night, according to Johnston.

"Dustin Maples played his first entire game of his career defensively the other night and I thought that he did a good job at the other corner," Johnston said. "So, I was just pleased with that. It was just a matter of shaking things up and going at it from a little different direction for some people."

"Winston was a real good team," said Johnston. "They were very physical and we did a good job."

The first quarter of the game between these two teams ended with neither team scoring. The first score came with 39 seconds left in the second quarter, when Dustin Maples took the ball from two yards out into the endzone. The two point conversion failed and the Green Wave led 6-0 at the half.

In the third quarter with 9:29 on the clock, Forrest Wilbanks scored on a two-yard keeper for the Green Wave. The two point conversion by Dustin Maples was good for the Green Wave to take a 14-0 lead.

Patrick Ellis scored when he never got touched as he went into the endzone from 23 yards out. The two-point conversion attempt was no good, so the Green Wave went up 20-0 with 5:57 on the clock.

A few plays later, the Patriots fumbled the ball and Dakota Mabry recovered it for the Green wave on the Patriot’s 33 yard line.

The Green Wave took over 1st and 10 on the 29. With 2:27 on the clock, the Green Wave scored a touchdown, but it was called back due to a holding penalty. The third quarter ended with the Green Wave up 20-0.

The Green Waves scored their last touchdown with 9:33 left in the game when Maples took the ball 25 yards into the endzone. The PAT snap was mishandled so Mabry took the ball into the endzone for two points to give the Green Wave a 28-0 lead over the Patriots.

With 8:57 left in the game, Patrick Ellis intercepted the Patriot’s ball on the Green Wave’s own 30 yard line. Dustin Maples took the ball down to the Patriot’s 40 yard line on the next run. The Patriot’s defense stepped up and kept the Green Wave out of the endzone on this drive.

Johnston started substituting other players in the game at this time. In for quarterback Wilbanks was Chris Pike.

The Patriots got on the scoreboard with 58 seconds left in the game when Jeremy Hill scored on a seven yard pass from Luke White. The two point conversion was good by Trenton Cockerell to cut the Green Wave score 28-8.

The Green Waves record stands 4-2 overall, 2-1 district. They will be back in district action Friday night at home to host the Kirk Academy Raiders.

Cougars lost heartbreaker to Hawks
North Panola’s Justin Burnette (left) came in as relief quarterback for a few snaps and proceeded to sneak a few yards to his credit with some blocking help from the offensive line.

The North Panola Cougars traveled to Holly Springs Friday night to tackle the 0-3 Hawks, in hopes of a district victory. It did not come to pass.

The Hawks won by a score of 15-9. The Cougars scored first with a 38 yard field goal by Larry Burdette with 3:47 seconds on the clock in the first quarter.

The scoreboard was not working and the majority of the Cougar fans were quite upset.

Holly High scored a touchdown in the second quarter with a 48-yard run into the end zone and the PAT was good. The score was 7-3 Hawks. The game was exciting but the Cougars could not get it together. The team looked better than they did against Rosa Fort.

In the opening minutes of the third quarter, Holly High scored again on a 44-yard run and capitalized on the two point conversion to increase their lead 15-3.

North Panola tried unsuccessfully to put more points on the scoreboard but failed.

Roderick Jefferson caught a 55-yard pass from quarterback Perry Trammell in the fourth quarter to give the Cougars and fans a ?shot in the arm.’ The two point conversion was no good and the score at this portion of the game was 15-9 at the 6:53 mark.

The scoreboard was still not working and statistician Michael Britt made these timelines available.

The Cougars’ numbers for this game looked far better than those of the week before.

Bruce Wilbourn was the welcomed surprise against Rosa Fort and this week it was Jarvis Taylor who gave the fans a needed jolt.

Taylor caught two passes for a total of 39 yards. On his first reception, Taylor broke one tackle and scampered for more yardage. The fans were ecstatic, especially his mother, Renee.

Jefferson finished the night with two receptions for 62 yards. "Play Hard" Denard Presley had two receptions for 19 yards and rushed nine times for 23 yards. Presley was doubled and sometimes tripled teamed every time he touched the ball.

Burdette ran for 10 yards on four carries and averaged 25 yards per kick on three tries for a total of 75 yards. Trammell punted twice for 53 yards and Wilbourn was held to one reception for 16 yards.

With all of their improvements from weeks before they could not pull a win out of the bag on an 0-3 team.

North Panola will host M.S. Palmer in another district showdown this Friday night at 7p.m.

Palmer defeated Byhalia Friday night 12-8 for its first win of the season. This was their first win in two seasons.

Outdoors edition coming
Hunters, fishermen and those who love the outdoors will find abundant information in a special section called "Extreme: a Sportsman’s Almanac 2005," edited by former Panolian outdoor editor Baron Von Forrenger.

Scheduled for publication October 11, the section will be full of information about a healthy deer herd, fall bass fishing, camping supplies, camping recipes, waterfowl information, fall turkey hunting, food plots and the 2005-2006 hunting dates and limits.

"Baron has outdone himself with an eight page section that has something for just about anyone," Panolian Managing Editor Rupert Howell said.

There is only a limited amount of advertising space so those who wish to be included should reserve their space soon.

The section will be published in both The Panolian and The North Mississippi Herald in Water Valley, so advertisers will be able to have exposure of 11,500 copies distributed in two areas that are very outdoor oriented, Howell said, adding, "The inclusion of the season dates and bag limits also gives this section added shelf life."

To reserve advertising space call Bob Boggan at The Panolian 563-4591 or 934-8422.

Hurricane delays contest results
By Myra Bean

Hurricanes are no respecter of football contests.

Therefore to get back on schedule, winners for Week 3 Panolian Football contest will be announced in Friday’s edition.

The Tennessee/LSU game was postponed until last night. Since my brain was still vacationing a little bit and I had to give away one spot with the Florida/Kentucky game on the contest twice, the decision was made not to give away another spot.

Anyway, my brain was not the only one taking a hiatus the past couple of weeks. They were talking about the guys on the NFL on FOX pregame show had some brains at camp or something. So I was not alone.

Moss Point
We are heading to Moss Point for the South Panola game and it would sure be great to see some of you take off at the last minute and join us. I know this will be a long week of traveling so get some sleep. We have to go to Horn Lake on Friday and some will head to Miss. State on Saturday and some to Tennessee in the midst of gas prices on the rise, so take care.

NFL
I had some other stuff going around my head this weekend to share with you but I forgot what it was.
Even though I was pulling for some certain teams in the NFL, there were a lot of good games that ended in last second field goals and made the day pretty good.

I was hoping that the Saints would pull out one over the Vikings but they didn’t make that good of a showing and lost 33-16.

Man, that Tampa Bay 17-16 win over Green Bay was a heartbreaker to some Packer fans. I know a couple in town. It’s funny before I met these two I didn’t hardly know Green Bay existed.

Heartbreaker game: Pittsburgh 23-20 last second field goal loss to Patriots, even though I like the Pats, too. Sometimes, you just never know who to pull for.

Well, I have to go now. Sorry about the delay for the Football Contest but after seeing what the 76 entrants put on the contest, I feel we owe them the right to get the best overall winner.

I know the Ole Miss/ Wyoming and Vikings/Saints game is the difference in a lot of one and two missed spots. The LSU/Tennessee game is really big. So was the Pats/Steelers game.

Have a good week and I’ll see you on the sidelines.
