| Sav-a-Life Banquet nets $4,000 to help fund women’s programs |

Panola County’s Sav-a-Life organization raised at least $4,000 last week at its biggest fund-raiser of the year.
The monies raised Thursday at the Fearfully and Wonderfully Made Banquet will fund about one-fifth of the pro-life ministry’s work for the year, Sav-a-Life director Teresa Towles said Monday morning.
"We operated on $28,000 last year," Towles said. "We did pretty well, but we always need help."
The banquet was held at the Batesville Readiness Center.
Participants at the fourth annual event were served a catered meal from Boone Mae’s restaurant and were entertained by the 10-member Fortune family from Toomsboro, Ga.
The event was free, but an offering was taken to help fund the ministry.
Dinner sponsors were the Batesville Kiwanis Club, Dickins Funeral Home, First Security Bank, Dr. Andy Garrott, Huron Smith Oil Co., Panola County Baptist Association, Renasant Bank, St. Mary’s/St. John’s Catholic community, and Trusty Law Firm.
Sav-a-Life ministers to pregnant women, offering them parenting classes, Bible studies, and access to a clothes closet and baby supplies.
The organization and its volunteers have helped 358 women this year, Towles said.
"Thanks to help from many, many people, we’re making a positive impact on women who need us," Towles said.
Regarding funding of Sav-a-Life, Towles suggested people make a $10 monthly donation to the ministry.
"That doesn’t sound like much, but if 10 people give $10 each month, that adds up," Towles said.
Volunteers are always needed to work in the Sav-a-Life center and to serve as counselors, the director said.
A training session for volunteer counselors is set for Friday and Saturday, October 14 and 15.

| A ride in a stretch limo and a pizza lunch last Friday were rewards for 31 students at Batesville Intermediate School who were top sellers in a recent fund-raiser sponsored by the school’s Booster Club.
The sales of Christmas items from catalogs netted the school $10,000, which will be used for as yet undetermined school improvements, according to Betsy Ferguson, school principal.
Skylyn Irby sold $773 worth of merchandise and was awarded a $150 cash prize for being the top salesman.
Other prizes went to: Kholton Helmes, $100; Sloan Garner, $75; De’Aria Wren, $50; Donovan Shaw, $50.
