Parents urged to follow state attendance laws
As the new school year gets underway, the Mississippi Department of Education’s Office of Compulsory Attendance and Enforcement reminds area parents about laws governing school attendance.

Under the Mississippi Compulsory School Attendance law, parents and guardians are required to enroll their children in a public or private school. This law applies to children who have reached the age of six and have not exceeded the age of 17 by September 1.

Parents interested in teaching their children at home are required to complete the certificate of enrollment and provide a simple description of the education that will be provided in this home.

TVEPA customers miffed at phone book’s erroneous entry
Incorrect telephone listings for Tallahatchie Valley Electric Power Association (TVEPA) in two local phone books have caused some of the power company’s customers to be very disgruntled according to Director of Services Margaret Russell.

Russell said one book, the Names and Numbers Batesville telephone directory, has their fax number listed instead of their regular number which is 563-4742.

Russell also said she did not know how the incorrect numbers were listed, but she didn’t remember ever being asked what numbers to publish.

Another phone book, The Big Blue, has the correct number listed, but has an additional listing that is their fax number and does not identify it as such.

"Needless to say, we don’t answer our fax machine," Russell said.

One calling the incorrectly listed number will reach the repeated high pitch squeals of the company’s fax machine.

Association Manager Brad Robison asks that all customer/members "pencil in" corrections in their phone books until those books are replaced, and he apologized for any inconveniences caused.

The correct number to call for service or questions concerning power bills is 563-4742.

The Batesville based utility serves approximately 26,000 north Mississippi residential customers in nine counties.
