Calvin Reeves, 4561 Curtis Rd., Batesville, had a second chance in Batesville Municipal Court on Wednesday to start over with a clean slate when his charges for DUI-other and no proof of insurance were dismissed because the arresting officer didn’t appear in court to prosecute the case.
A similar case involving Ben Chambers Sr., 1204 Carlisle Rd., Courtland, who was charged with DUI-other and careless driving, was continued when an agreement was made between defense attorney Kirk Willingham and city prosecuting attorney Parker Still.
Pamela Deason, 218 Dettor, Batesville, was charged with DUI-other, no proof of insurance and leaving the scene of an accident. The charges are pending while Deason is undergoing medical treatment.
A preliminary hearing for Willie Reeves, 4511 Curtis Rd., Batesville, was heard with the testimony of Reeves and affiant Detective Paul Shivers.
Reeves was charged with grand larceny in the theft of a 1992 Mitsubishi from a lady whose name he could not recall. He told Judge Bill McKenzie the car’s owner let him use the car when they were smoking crack cocaine together. He said he took the car with her permission to Memphis and a day later the car was reported stolen.
The case has been referred to Circuit Court.
Fredrick Black, 410 Warren St., Sardis, was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a controlled substance. The court is awaiting paperwork so the case can move further. David Walker has been appointed as defense attorney.
Roy Key, 107 Martin Luther King Drive #2-D, Batesville, was found guilty of discharging a firearm in city limits and old fines.
Key explained to McKenzie that he was disabled and was on a fixed income.
Judge McKenzie sentenced Key to 30 days in jail to satisfy the fines.
Simple assault
Demeshia Battle, Batesville, had a simple assault and malicious mischief charge dismissed as the affiants Latasha Tellis and Chiquita Wilson failed to appear to prosecute the case. He was fined $265 for no driver’s license.
Cornelius Wells, 217 Noble St., Batesville, also had a simple assault charge dismissed as the affiant Tryone Griffin failed to appear.
Shoplifting
Toussaint Smith, 513 S. Clay St., Charleston, was found guilty of stealing three DVDs from Wal-Mart worth $43.59 total.
Judge McKenzie informed him that if he is caught stealing again he will serve jail time. Smith was fined $595.
Another shoplifting case involved Marissa L. Milam, 6079 Eureka Rd., Batesville. She told Judge McKenzie she was having a meeting with the affiant Susan Smith after court and if the charges are dismissed she (Milam) will be be seeking medical treatment.
Milam’s other charges of driving while license suspended and no proof of insurance are pending. Judge McKenzie continued the case for two weeks "so everything can get straightened out."
Jessica Kemp, 310 S. Circle, Charleston, was transferred to the David Bryan Justice Complex from Coahoma jail where she has already served three weeks for shoplifting at Wal-Mart. Judge McKenzie sentenced her to 30 days in lieu of payment of $595 in fines.
Contempt
Cashandra Cosby, 309 Arizona St., Batesville, was charged with contempt-old fines. She had the option of working for the city work program, but she has a job. Judge McKenzie agreed to let her pay half of the $540 today and pay the other half Friday, May 27.
Judge McKenzie said he could see she was making an attempt and agreed to work with her.
Other cases
Roy Gardner, 104 Gore St., Batesville, was charged with running a stop sign at the corner of Clinton and Martin Luther King.
Gardner contested the charge, saying, "There is not a stop sign there."
Judge McKenzie gave both Officer Ronald Ragon and Gardner an opportunity during court to drive to the location to see if the stop sign was there.
Officer Ragon and Gardner returned and told Judge McKenzie there was no stop sign in the location so the case was dismissed. Judge McKenzie advised Officer Ragon to tell the city to put a sign up before someone gets hurt.
Gardner was fined $571 for old fines and a driving while license suspended charge.
Vermacy Corbitt, 61 CR 343, Taylor Parkway, Oxford, contested a charge of careless driving, telling Judge McKenzie she admitted she was speeding but not driving carelessly.
Officer Vince Walls was ordered to clarify the charge and report back to the court.
Judge McKenzie told Corbitt the court would notify her with the final results so she would not have to appear in court again.

Paige Pearsall, 2715 Loch Lane, Charlotte, N.C., was found guilty of possession of alcohol by a minor and was fined $265.
Bennett Stoneburner, 101 Creekmore Blvd., Oxford, was found guilty of possession of alcohol by a minor and was fined $265.
Paula Gibson, 941 Crosby Hall, Oxford, was found guilty of possession of alcohol by a minor and was fined $265.
Todd Grow, 301 Kincannon Hall, Oxford, was found guilty of possession of alcohol by a minor and paid his fine of $265 prior to court.
William Correll, 355 Fairfax Dr., Winston Salem, N.C., was found guilty of alcohol by a minor and was fined $265.
Elizabeth Howell, 114 Bluegrass Dr., Franklin, Tenn., was found guilty of possession of alcohol by a minor and was fined $265.
James C. Mize, 1411 S. Lamar, Oxford, was found guilty of possession of alcohol by a minor and was fined $265.
Demeshia Battle, Batesville, was found guilty of having no driver’s license and fined $265.
James J. Lee, 216 West St., Batesville, found guilty of driving while license suspended and fined $340.
Anthony Lee Newsom, P.O. Box 713 Senatobia, was charged with driving while license suspended, expired tag and no proof of insurance. Newsom was allowed a week to get his paperwork straightened out and will return to court Wednesday.
Linda K. Pollard, 7 Main St., Senatobia, was found guilty of no proof of insurance. His fine was reduced to $155 for providing proof.
Jacqueline M. Lee, 3392-C Cottonplant Rd., Batesville, was found guilty of no proof of insurance and also had her fine reduced to $155 after providing proof to Judge McKenzie.
Randy King, 374 Ford Rd., Batesville, was found guilty of no proof of insurance and his fine was also lowered to $155 for providing proof.
Patricia P. Fletcher, 113 C. Cole Dr., Batesville, was found guilty of no proof of insurance and had a reduced fine of $155.
Calvin Cox, P.O. Box 42 Batesville, was found guilty of driving while license suspended, expired tag and no proof of insurance. His fine is $1,569.
Chris Ladd, 1732 Terza Rd., Batesville, was found guilty of no proof of insurance and driving while license suspended. Judge McKenzie ordered Ladd to start the city work program in lieu of paying the fines.
