The North Delta basketball teams kicked the Christmas holiday break off right with back-to-back district wins last week.
The teams traveled to Lee Academy in Clarksdale Tuesday, Dec. 7. Then they hosted Kirk Academy and Carroll Academy Thursday and Friday.
The varsity Lady Green Wave had a clean sweep last week with three district wins to up their district record to 4-1.
The Lady Green Wave downed the Lee Academy Lady Colts 41-25. Alex Rice was the game high scorer with 18 points. Other Green Wave scorers include Margaret Britt, 11 points; Leslie Wilson, 8 points; and Laura Nabors, 4 points.
Friday night’s game against Kirk was a nailbiter to the final second.
Kirk jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but in two three-point baskets by Alex Rice the Green Wave tied the game and on another basket by Leslie Wilson and took the lead with 3:36 left in the first quarter.
The Lady Green Wave were by no means safe as they took an 11-9 lead into the second quarter.
Kirk retook the lead 15-14 in the second quarter and the teams were back and forth with lead changes five times in the second quarter. At the half, Kirk had a precarious 19-18 lead.
In the third quarter, the Lady Green Wave only scored three points and Kirk led by as many as seven. Going into the fourth quarter, Kirk led 25-22.
If the game was not interesting up until this point, it took a turn for the excitement level.
North Delta took a 26-25 lead with 5:21 left in the game on back to back field goals by Rice. From there the lead changed hands four times as Kirk led 29-28 with 54.6 seconds left in the game.
Kathleen Snyder tied the game at 29 hitting one of two free throws.
Kirk fouled and Leslie Wilson went to the free throw line with 7.1 seconds left. She hit one of two free throws for the 30-29 lead. Kirk traveled and turned the ball over with 2.7 seconds left in the game. Two free throws by Margaret Britt sealed the victory with 1.2 seconds left in the game.
Leslie Wilson stole the inbound ball as the last seconds ticked off the clock.
Rice also led the game in scoring against Kirk Academy with another 18-point performance.
Against Carroll Academy, the Lady Green Wave won 45-31. Britt led the Lady Green Wave in scoring with 13 points, followed by Wilson and Nabors with 10 points each. Rice and Kathleen Snyder put up four points each. Nikki Darby and Hayley Mabry contributed two points each.
North Delta led Carroll 25-14 at halftime.
The Lady Green Wave return to action after the new year in the Kirk Tournament, Jan. 3 to 8.

The North Delta boys basketball team saw a lot of action last week.
The Green Wave went 2-1 for the week in district games and brought their district record to 3-2 and overall 6-5.
A heartbreaking loss was felt at the hands of Lee Academy Tuesday night as they crushed the Green Wave 66-31.
The Green Wave redeemed itself with back-to-back district wins over Kirk Academy and Carroll Academy Thursday and Friday nights, respectively.
The Green Wave looked real good over their district foes as they downed Kirk 62-43 and Carroll Academy 74-48.
Against Kirk the Green Wave jumped out to an 11-1 lead with 4:58 left in the first quarter, but Kirk showed some meddle and made a comeback.
Kirk tied the game 15-15 with 1:36 left in the first quarter. The Green Wave had a slight 18-17 lead going into the second quarter.
The Green Wave again led by as many as eight points, 28-20, but Kirk rebounded and tied the game 29-29 at halftime.
The Green Wave were determined in the second half to take this game and built a 47-31 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The rest is history as the Green Wave built a 20 point lead in the fourth quarter and coasted for the win.
Leading the Green Wave in scoring was Will Poole with 28 points, followed by Harrison Nickle with 14 and Scott Ross with 11. Other scorers include Adam Good with five points and Clint Egbert and Evan West with two points each.
It was no contest with Carroll Academy Friday night.
Nickle led in the Green Wave with 20 points and nine rebounds. Poole followed with 19 points, 10 rebounds and six steals.
Other Green Wave scorers include Ross, 11 points; Dakota Mabry, 6 points; Goodwin and Jacob Gurley, 5 points each; Egbert, 4 points; and Marty Hearn and Brandon White, 2 points each.
The Green Wave are resting until after the Christmas holidays when they will participate in the Kirk Academy Tournament Jan. 3 through 8. |

| SP cheer squad conducts fundraiser for Florida trip |
| SPHS cheerleaders are sponsoring a Boston Butt sale to help with expenses at UCA National Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Florida in February, 2005.
You may purchase a Boston Butt from any SPHS cheerleader, cheer parent, or coach. The cost is $20. They will be available for pick-up between 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 31.

| South Panola High School cheerleaders won the varsity division at The Athletic Cheer & Dance National Championship Series on December 11-12. On Saturday, December 18, the South Panola High School cheerleaders will compete at 2:30 for the MHSAA 5A State Cheerleading Championship. Brooke Sibley, captain of the SPHS squad, will compete for Best Cheerleader in the state at 11:15 a.m. The competition will be held at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.

Find out just what the people will submit to and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these will continue until they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. Basketball is a game of endurance, according to many coaches. You may dominate an opponent for a quarter or two, but if he or she is in better physical condition, it will eventually show.
Yes, North Panola had a little trouble with the scoreboard on Dec. 7, but the Cougars and Palmer enjoyed two very competitive games of basketball.
First, the Lady Cougars jumped out to a 33-32 half time lead. However, at the end of the game the score was 62 to 62.
Head coach Jocelyn Frost was looking a little tired, and the Cougars could not seem to get their ducks all lined up. The Palmer girls won by a score of 75-72 after one overtime. Nevertheless, the game could just have easily have been another victory for the Cougars. Hang in there Cougars!
Next, the men’s Cougar basketball team had a 27-23 halftime lead, and they went on to win by a score of 73-61.
It looked like the Cougars were ready for anybody. There was just not much justice in a victory for the Palmer men. The Cougar men had their Trojan Horse going full speed all night long, and it was just too much for the Palmer team.
Finally, the ladies and the men were glad to be back on the court after not being able to play in the Senatobia Basketball Tournament. Senatobia had to call it off because of the state playoff game in football.
Congratulations to the Warriors and the South Panola Tigers on their winning a Football State Championship Trophy.
Watch out, though, Coach Demetrius Hill has some high hopes for the future.

 STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State had a conference-most five players selected to the 2004 Southeastern Conference All-Freshman Team, the league office announced Thursday. State’s five picks were also the most by the school since 1989.
Tight end Eric Butler (Moss Point, Miss.), defensive lineman Corey Clark (Taylorsville, Miss.), linebacker Titus Brown (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), defensive back Mario Bobo (Batesville, Miss.) and return specialist Jonathan Lowe (Phenix City, Ala.) were all named to the first-team only squad. Butler and Clark are redshirt freshmen; Brown, Bobo and Lowe were in their first season on campus.
Butler, a 6-2, 246-pounder, caught 15 passes for 166 yards, an 11.1-yard average, and four touchdowns on the season. He ranked third on the team among all receivers in catches, and his four TD receptions were a single-season best in school history. He was named to The Sporting News All-Freshman Team earlier this week.
Clark, 6-1, 310-pounder, registered 28 tackles on the year, including three for loss (minus 6 yards). He was also credited with knocking down one pass at the line of scrimmage.
Brown, a 6-3, 223-pounder, recorded 59 tackles on the season, including 3.5 for loss (minus 7 yards), 1.5 of which were quarterback sacks (minus 4 yards). He finished fourth on the club in total tackles, despite playing in just nine games with five starts. He was named to The Sporting News All-Freshman Team earlier this week.
Bobo, a 6-1, 170-pounder, made 27 tackles on the year, including one for loss (minus 2 yards). He tied for second on the club with two caused fumbles.
Lowe, a 5-7, 165-pounder, returned 17 punts for 195 yards, an 11.5-yard average, and one touchdown, and 19 kickoffs for 343 yards, an 18.1-yard average. He finished second in the SEC in punt return average, and his 73-yard TD return against Florida was the longest in the conference this season. He was named to The Sporting News All-Freshman Team earlier this week.
The 2004 SEC All-Freshman team is the fifth annual squad voted on by the league’s coaches.
