A motorist passing through Panola County is in jail awaiting a bond hearing following his attempt to escape local authorities Tuesday afternoon.

According to Mississippi Public Information Officer Warren Strain, Daniel J. Higgs, 21, of Missouri has been arrested and charged with DUI, driving without a license, resisting arrest, providing false information to law enforcement and possession of a vehicle without authority.

Strain said the Mississippi Highway Patrol received a call around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday of a driver traveling on Interstate 55 who appeared to be intoxicated.

"We often receive calls like this," he said.

"So we had a pair of troopers who found the vehicle in question and observed it for a short period of time.

"According to the report, it was obvious to the troopers that the driver’s judgement was impaired so they made the decision to pull him over and further investigate the situation," he said.

Once Higgs was pulled over, he fled officers, Strain said.

"When our guys got the car pulled over, it was near the intersection of I-55 and Highway 35 traveling south," he said.

"After he pulled over, he ran from the car and into some woods nearby to hide.

"At that time, we contacted the Batesville Police Department for assistance and Higgs was soon apprehended," Strain said.

Strain said running the tag on the vehicle let troopers and BPD know the car, a 1989 Chevy Caprice, was stolen.

"The vehicle was listed as stolen from Perryville, Mo.," he said.

"We have already made contact with the authorities there to make them aware of the situation."

Higgs remains in custody at the Panola County Jail. Bond has not been set in this case.

The next phase of the Sardis Lake Marina Project is moving along nicely for city leaders, Mayor Richard Darby said.

While no deadline has been set for proposals as of yet, Darby said the city has received inquiries from hotel developers about placing a hotel and conference center near the newly opened Skipper Marina on Sardis Lake.

Darby said the city hopes to have a developer that would be involved in the hotel/conference center and an 18-hole golf course.

"I understand that the hotel developer may not be the one to construct the golf course, but they often will bring in another developer to handle that portion of the project," Darby said.

"It’s not uncommon to have separate developers working together on a phase of a project like this one," he said.

Darby said while no group has asked to do its due diligence work yet, they have had interest from groups and have conducted one site visit.

Kids and dogs of Panola County will have the chance to participate in the Fourth of July Children’s Parade on Thursday, July 1.

This year’s parade is sponsored by the Batesville Main Street Program, Panola County Humane Society and the Batesville Exchange Club.

"We have held a children’s parade like this for several years," Main Street Manager Colleen Clark said. "But this year we have added a new twist to it."

This year, kids are encouraged to bring their pets.

"We want people to decorate their bikes and wagons like they always have," Clark said. "But this year we want them to bring their pets with them if they can."

Clark said there will be a $5 entry fee for pets with the money going to benefit the humane society.

"All pets are welcome, but, for safety concerns, some species (rabbits, frogs, cats, etc.) must be in cages or carriers," she said. "We also ask that all dogs be kept on a leash and be current on his or her shots."

"The fee goes to enter the pets/owners into three contests we will be holding during this year’s parade," she said.

The categories are:
– Cutest pet
– Most patriotic pet
