A Batesville man has been arrested and charged with the murder of Kenny Veldin, investigator Mark Whitten of the Panola County Sheriff’s Department said.
According to Whitten, the sheriff’s department received a report of a shooting on Friday night at approximately 6:30 p.m.
"The S.O. was called out to Sardis Lake Drive for a reported shooting," he said. "In addition, Tri-Lakes ambulance service and Coles Point Fire Department EMRs responded."
The victim received multiple gunshot wounds with a small caliber handgun, Whitten said.
"Veldin was transported to Tri-Lakes Medical Center by ambulance where he later died as a result of the injuries," he said.
David Scott McLarty, 32, was arrested and charged with murder at the scene. No bond has been set. He remains in custody at the Panola County Detention Center.
Whitten said he still had to speak with witnesses in an effort to better determine what caused the incident.
"It appears there may have been an argument between the two men that led to the shooting, but we cannot elaborate on that at this time," Whitten said.

BMS Student Gets Help
with Weight

Batesville Middle School has a superstar in their midst, to most people he’s known as Shaq. NO, not Shaquille O’Neal of the L.A. Lakers but Shaquille Ladd of Batesville.
The 9 year-old Shaq, the courageous son of Joyce Ladd and Ricky Gates, suffers from asthma and diabetes. He has accomplished an obstacle that many adults can not. At the beginning of the school year he topped the scales weighing 249 pounds, well over weight for a child 4’10". Now with the help of his teachers, parents, and peers he weighs an astonishing 189.
Shaq, already diagnosed with asthma, came to the attention of the BMS teachers last fall when during his physical education class he would get out of breath very easily. This turned the caution lights on for Coach Andy White, BMS coach and P.E. teacher.
"It was apparent that we had a problem on our hands; he couldn’t get half of his exercises done. Normally what we do is at the beginning of the year we start the children off with a basic routine of five to ten push-ups and ten to fifteen sit-ups. Shaquille would get through with half of those and would get out of breath. This bothered me a lot", says Coach White.

Sardis Annexing Smaller Territory

The area proposed for annexation by the City of Sardis has been narrowed after a called meeting last week to discuss the findings of Bridge and Slaughter.
"We looked at the study area and cut out areas that we didn’t believe would be helpful to the city," Mayor Richard Darby said.
The areas cut out under the new proposal are the Goodnight property, the gravel pit area of Smith road and the Holloway property due west of the city limits.
"We want to leave room for certain areas to develop, but we feel like these areas will not be developed so they are of no benefit to the city," he said.
"There will be no economic impact to the annexation if we leave out these parcels of property," he said.
Darby said even with leaving out these areas, the city has maintained enough of a buffer zone that they can control future development of the areas they will be annexing.
"There was just so much vast territory that Bridge and Slaughter recommended narrowing the area we want to annex," he said.
Alderman Harry Dunnigan said he believed the city should extend a little further north along Highway 51.
"I feel like that is an area the city really needs to look at before we decide not to," he said.
Alderman JoJo Still asked if the annexation area still included the Orr Subdivision.
"There is some major work that needs to be done over there," he said. "The roads are torn up and the ditches are horrible.
"I just believe this is a task we can not handle at this point," Still said. "Right now we can’t even maintain what we already have."
Darby told Still and the other aldermen in attendance that the city had passed the point of whether or not to annex.
