County Hopes LSBP
Goes to Floor for Vote

Unless a special legislative session has good results, some bridges in Panola County will not be replaced.
According to Jerry Perkins, President of the Panola County Board of Supervisors, the LSBP program that provides funding to replace deteriorating bridges may not be funded.
Perkins said some of the supervisors met with Representative Warner McBride and were told the best thing they could do was talk to as many legislators as possible.
"The program has not been voted down," Perkins said. "But it has not made it to the floor for a vote either.
The proposal is still being looked at in committee," he said.
Perkins said since 1995 Panola County has received more money than any other county in Mississippi from the LSBP program.
Qualifying bridges selected based on their condition.
"There is a formula they use to see if a bridge should be replaced or not," Perkins said. "But I don’t know how they make their determinations other than using it.

Underwood Resigns
as Head of TVEPA May 10

Tom Underwood, general manager of Tallahatchie Valley Electric Power Association (TVEPA) tendered his resignation on Monday, May 10, according to TVEPA board president Danny Ferguson. No reason was stated.
Ferguson told The Panolian that Brad Robison will serve as interim manager. The board will meet again today, Friday, May 14.
Underwood has served as general manager with the power company for12 years. He also served as C.E.O. of ServicePlus and President of Desoto Gas Company, both owned by the stockholders of TVEPA.
TVEPA provides electricity to areas located in the counties of Panola, Tate, Tallahatchie, and Yalobusha, with additional service areas located in portions of the counties of Grenada, Quitman, Tunica, Lafayette, and Calhoun. The Mississippi Public Service Commission delineates the areas TVEPA may serve with certificates of public convenience and necessity.
The directors of TVEPA are: Danny Ferguson (President), Gene Standridge (Secretary/ Treasurer) Danny Ingram (Dir. and Vice-President), Harry House (director), Lamar Crockett (director), Robert Chapman, Will Hayes, and Pate Brown. Tom Underwood (General Manager of TVEPA,, C.E.O. of ServicePlus, President of DeSoto and on its board).
The only directors of DeSoto Gas who are not involved with TVEPA and ServicePlus are: Bowdre Emerson, Phil Emerson, Paul Emerson, and Charles Emerson.

Sr. Employee of Thermos Retires

Johnny Golden, systems manager, presented a plaque to Bob Donat at his retirement party Tuesday. Donat retired after 45 years with The Thermos Company during the company’s 100th year anniversary. He also received a $500 gift certificate to Bass Pro. Shop.

Bob Donat retires after 45 years with The Thermos Company during the company’s 100th year anniversary.
Bob started as a mail runner when he was a senior in High School in the Thermos Corporate offices at Norwich, Connecticut in 1958. He is the last of the original Thermos employees and the most senior in the Company.
Bob has worked his way up from mail courier for the corporate employees at Norwich to the Plant Controller here at the Batesville plant.
Originally from Norwich, Connecticut, Bob and family transferred to Batesville when the plant was closed in Norwich in 1989, and has lived in Oxford with his wife Marilyn for the past 15 years.
Among some of his retirement plans are spending more time with his family, daughter Lynn and grandson Thomas, and pursuit of his favorite pastimes: fishing for small mouth bass and following the Ole Miss football team.

Whether it’s the Mississippi heat or the back breaking work that keeps you from harvesting your own home grown veggies and fruits, Batesville’s own Billy Durham has been coming to the rescue of many locals who love the taste of the South for some time now.
"I’ve been doing this for five years now," says Durham. And business is booming. His hours are usually 9 to 7, Monday thru Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 11. But as Durham puts it, "however how long that traffic’s out there. The other day" Durham adds, "it was pouring down rain and it was one of our best days this Spring."

Evelyn Flint Memorial

| The Batesville Garden Club dedicated a flower bed to the late Evelyn Flint and her family this past Wednesday on the Downtown Square in front of Amazing Vase.
Evelyn was a member of the Garden Club for over 50 years.
