Vonita Louise Samuels, 69, of Batesville, died Tuesday, September 7, 2004, at Graceland Nursing Home.

Samuels, born June 12, 1935, to the late George Gerald Green and the late Lucille Hulsey Green, was a homemaker.

Services were Thursday at Dickins Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Jumper Chapel Cemetery in Water Valley. Rev. Damon Plummer officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Survivors include three brothers, John Russell Green and Bobby Joe Green, both Iuka and Billy Green of Batesville and one sister Edna Raymond of Batesville.


Sanders, Berna Dean
Fairhope, Ala.
Berna Dean Sanders, 76, formerly of Batesville, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at her residence in Fairhope, Ala. of heart failure.

Services were Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at Fairhope Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Jerry Henry officiated. Burial was in Memory Gardens of Fairhope, Ala. Fairhope Funeral Home had charge.

Sanders, born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Allie Arendale, attended Draughm’s Business College in Memphis, Tenn. in 1949. She was a retired Civil Service employee having worked as a medical supply clerk, an active member of First Baptist Church of Fairhope, Ala. and Thomas Hospital Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Frank Sanders.

Survivors include two daughters, Norvelle Sanders and Sheila Watson, both of Fairhope; one sister Billie Jean Sossaman of Batesville; one brother W.C. "Dub" Arendale of Batesville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In a lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church building Program, 300 S. Section St., Fairhope, Ala.

Batesville, Miss.
Myrtle Sanders, 92, of Batesville, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Beverly Health Care.

Sanders, born April 19, 1912, was a Baptist and a homemaker.

Services were Sunday at Kimbro Funeral Home. Rev. Courtney Selvy had charge. Burial was in Marks Cemetery. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge.

Survivors include two sons, Burl Lee Sanders of Steel, Mo. and Floyd Sanders of Courtland; three daughters, Blanche Denly of San Bernardino, Calif., Ruby Woods of Cleveland and Joy Perry of Marks; one brother John Smart of Scottsboro, Ala.; one sister Mamie Bearden of Heander, Ala.; 24 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.


Sanford, Angelo "Dick" Jr.
Angelo "Dick" Sanford Jr., 67, of Batesville, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford of a stroke.

Services are Saturday at Springhill Pope M.B. Church. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Batesville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hodges Funeral Home has charge.

Sanford was a retired construction worker for F & F Construction.

Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Veazey, Brinda Chapman and Mary Robinson, all of Pope; three sons, Johnnie S. Sanford of Courtland, Francis Sanford and Will Anthony Sanford, both of Pope; one sister Rosie Sanford Thomas of Courtland; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.    


Sanford, Kenneth Donnell "Don"
Kansas City, Kan.
Kenneth Donnell Sanford of Kansas City, Kan., 23, formerly of Batesville, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, in Kansas City of homicide.

Services are Saturday at Pilgrim Rest M.B. Church in Batesville. Burial will be in Pilgrim Rest Cemetery. Bishop Garfield Tyler will officiate. Cooley’s Mortuary Inc. has charge.

Sanford, born Oct. 5, 1980, to Kenneth Chapman of Batesville and Jimmie Jean Ford Mays of Coldwater, was a member of the Rejoicing Temple C.O.G.I.C. Church in Kansas City.

Survivors in addition to his parents include his step-father, Robert Mays Jr. of Coldwater; a special friend Dontay Taylor of Kansas City; one daughter LaDaejeo Sanford of Kansas City; four sisters, Denise Lashell Sanford of Courtland, Carolyn Renee Sanford, Tammy Annette Sanford and Aretha Webb, all of Batesville; two brothers, Reginald Ford and James Travis Sanford, both of Kansas City, Mo.; and his grandmother Lillie Pearl Chapman of Batesville.


Sartin, Debra Kay
Debra Kay Sartin, 47, of Pope, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at her residence.

Sartin, born Sept. 28, 1957, to the late Mary Ellen White Tuck and to the late Billy Mack Tuck, was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting.

Services were Sunday at Dickins Funeral Home. Burial was in Curtis Union Cemetery. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Survivors include her husband Clinton Sartin of Pope; one brother Steve Tuck of Southaven and one sister Wanda Black of Summerville, Tenn.


Sawyer, Georgie Harmon
Georgie Harmon Sawyer, 80, formerly of Batesville, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004.

Memorial services were Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Middletown, Ohio. Burial was in Woodside Cemetery. Rev. Karen Haak officiated. Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home of Middletown, Ohio had charge.

Sawyer was active in the Sorosis Club, Middletown Garden Club, Butler County Medical Auxiliary, Wildwood Golf Club, Middletown Tennis Club, Browns Run Country Club, Middletown Duplicate Bridge Club and a volunteer for many organizations mainly Middletown Symphony, Arts in Middletown, Middletown Library, American Cancer Society and Hospice of Middletown.

She was a graduate of Mississippi University for Women, with majors in bacteriology and chemistry. She worked as a chemist for City Service Laboratories in Lake Charles, La. for a year before moving to Ohio. She was employed by Proctor & Gamble for five years while living in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Survivors include one son James L. Sawyer of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Anne Bradley Sawyer of Edgartown, Mass. and Georgie Elizabeth Sawyer of Portland, Ore.; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. James L. Sawyer and a brother Miller Bradley Harmon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church , 2910 Central Avenue, Middletown, Ohio 45044, or charity of choice.


Sayle, David Bardwell
David Bardwell Sayle, 65, of Charleston, died Friday, March 26, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.

Services were Sunday at the Presbyterian Church in Charleston. Burial was in Charleston Cemetery. Newsom Funeral Home had charge.

Sayle, born Sept. 13, 1938, to the late Frank and the late Eleanor Sayle, was a farmer and a marine veteran.

Survivors include his wife Joan Denley Sayle of Charleston; three daughters, Beth Sayle Roberts and Gwen Sayle Lott, both of Grenada and Gene Sayle Flautt of Charleston; one sister Sally Sayle Weathersby of Memphis; and five grandchildren.


Scallorn, Lance Leon
Lance Leon Scallorn, 87, of Sardis, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.

Services were Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Moore Funeral Home Chapel in Sardis. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Sardis. Rev. Jerry Sanford officiated. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

Scallorn, born Jan. 30, 1917, to the late Robert Lee and the late Tencil Merriman Scallorn, was a retired supervisor for Sardis Luggage Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a mason.

Survivors include one daughter Joyce Cayson of Red Bay, Ala.; one son Roy Scallorn of Sardis; one sister Dell Bailey of Sardis; and one brother Leslie Scallorn of Batesville.
He was preceded in death by his wife Clara Scallorn.


Scates, Robert Lee
Robert Lee Scates, 68, of Como, died Friday, March 12, 2004 at his residence of cancer.

Graveside services were Monday at Harmontown Baptist Cemetery near Como. Moore Funeral Home in Sardis had charge.

Scates, born April 20, 1935, to the late Lyman and June Lewter Scates, was a retired technician for Bellsouth and a member of Temple Baptist Church in Memphis.

Survivors include one daughter Julia Marie Herring of Saratoga, N.Y.; two sons, Don Scates and Howard Scates, both of Harmontown; one sister Carolyn Buoni of Memphis; one brother Dan Scates of Collierville, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte Howard Scates.


Schuwerk, Dr. Ernest H.   
Dr. Ernest H. Shuwerk, 78, of Batesville, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at his residence of heart failure.

Shuwerk, born Oct. 26, 1925 to the late Edward Glenn and Gertrude Geiger Schuwerk, was owner and physician for 32 years of Schuwerk Chiropratic in Batesville.

Services were Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Rev. Clint Harris officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

He was preceded in death by his sister Jennie Schuwerk Hiller and his brother Edward Schuwerk.

Survivors include his wife Lynn Smith Schuwerk of Batesville; one step-daughter Sherri Lynn Sutton of Glenville, W.Va.; one step-son Joseph M. Sutton of Tallassee, Ala.; his sister-in-law Evelyn Schuwerk of Springboro, Pa.; three nephews; two nieces and one step-grandson, Cody Sutton of Tallassee, Ala.


Scroggins, Pauline H.
Pauline H. Scroggins, 84, of Batesville, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford of heart failure.

Graveside services are today at 11 a.m. at Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Batesville. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Scroggins, born on Oct. 25, 1919, to the late Clarence and the late Minnie Bell Hallmark, was a homemaker.

Survivors include one son Sonny Scroggins; five daughters, Mary Scroggins McGregor and Judy Scroggins, both of Batesville, Kathleen Scroggins King of Red Banks, Jessie Scroggins of Oxford, and Peggy Scroggins of Memphis; one sister Mamie Scroggins Bishop of Marks; 23 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 12 great great-grandchildren.

Sarah Lottie Scruggs, 95, of Batesville, died Monday, April 19, 2004, at Beverly Health Care in Batesville.

Services were Thursday at Cold Springs Methodist Church in Batesville. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Kenneth Corley officiated. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

Scruggs, born Oct. 25, 1908, to the late Lawson and late Dollie Brewer McClure, was a housewife and a member of Cold Springs Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son Edward Lee Scruggs of Sardis; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great, great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband James "Bud" Scruggs; and three sons, Jimmy, Leslie and Kenneth Scruggs.

Calvin Scott, 47, of Fayetteville, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Washington Medical Center.

Scott, born Feb. 3, 1957, to the late Fred and Ida Bell Osby Scott, was a member of Spring Hill A.S.A. M.B. Church.

Services were Monday at Spring Hill A.S.A. M.B. Church. Burial was in Spring Hill A.S.A. Cemetery. Rev. Albert Willie officiated. Cooley’s Mortuary had charge.

Survivors include two daughters, Princess Phillips of Como and Makala Scott of Fayetteville, Ark.; four sisters, Freddie Willie, Lydia Bell Conner and Lizzie Simmons, all of Batesville and Lula Ferrell of Oxford and four brothers, Rickey Scott, Willie Lee Hardin and Donald Scott, all of Batesville and James Scott of Fayetteville, Ark.

John Frank Self, 55, of Crenshaw, died Friday, August 27, 2004, at his residence of heart failure.

Self, born Oct. 27, 1948, to the late Charlie Frank and the late Margaret C. McCraney Self, was a mechanic.

Services were Monday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Longtown Cemetery. Rev. Clint Harris officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Sexton, Patricia Kay
Patricia Kay Sexton, 50, of Senatobia, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at her residence.

Services were Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial was at Longtown Cemetery. Pate-Jones Funeral Home had charge.

Sexton, a Baptist, was a waitress.

Survivors include her husband Billy Joe Sexton of Sardis; one daughter Teresa Sands of Sardis; one son Billy Joe Sexton Jr. of Sardis; two sisters Sandra L. White of Batesville and Betty Jean Haas of Hialeah, Fla.; three brothers, George Danny Brown of Marks, J. W. Jackson and Donald Eugene Jackson, both of Pittsburg, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother William Eddie Brown.


Shearer, Edward Bradley  III
Edward Bradley Shearer III, 68, of Water Valley, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003.

Services were Friday at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley. Rev. Jimmy Dale Sartain and Rev. Raymond Aven officiated. Seven Oaks Funeral Home had charge.

Shearer, born Mar. 15, 1935, to the late Edward Boyd and the late Dolly Ruth (Dalton) Shearer, was the publisher and editor of the North Mississippi Herald in Water Valley. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Woodland Hills Baptist Church where he served as music director.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Kilgore Shearer of Water Valley; one son Dr. James E. Shearer of Las Cruces, NM; and two brothers, Paul Milton Shearer of Panacea, FL and John Thomas Shearer of Independence, MS.

Charles Lucious Shields Sr., 88, of Clarksdale, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at his residence of heart failure.

Graveside services were Sunday. Burial was in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Clarksdale Rev. David Newton officiated. National Funeral Home had charge.

Shields, born Jan. 11, 1916, graduated from Sunflower High School, belonged to the American Legion and V.F.W. Post #3936, was in the Army-Air Force during WWII and a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by one brother Floyd Collins Shields and one sister Florence Shields Mitchell.

Survivors include his wife Willie Mae Keenum Shields of Clarksdale; one daughter Linda Marie Singletary of Batesville; one son Charles Lucious Shields Jr. of Clarksdale; one sister Corine Shields Franks of Clarksdale; one brother Richard Leon Shields of Clarksdale; three grandchildren, Dominic Correro III of Batesville, Janet Shields Collins of Laurel, Charles Lucious Shields III of Laurel and six great-grandchildren.

Shields, born July 18, 1927, to Henry and Elizabeth Glenn Morrow, was a homemaker and past president of Lafayette County Home Extension Service. She was also a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter Hilda Shields James of Zolfo Springs, Fla.; one son Tim M. Shields of Pineville, La.; three sisters, Mary Morrow Burns of Batesville, Helen Grace Morrow White of Senatobia and Miriam Morrow Koerner of Barnett, Mo.; one brother L.J. Morrow of Batesville; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Ginger Gail Russell Shirley, 26, of Batesville, died Saturday, June 12, 2004.

Shirley, born Feb. 1, 1978, to Jeff and Tammy McGregor Russell, was a homemaker.

Shumaker, born December 9, 1927, retired with Curtis 1000 Printing Company with over 25 years of employment as a press operator and was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Hunt of Harrisburg, Ark. and Kathy Robertson of Katy, Texas; three sons, William Robertson of Como, John Robertson of Winona and Larry Robertson of Westwego, La.; two brothers, Herman Bullard of Memphis and Charlie Barringer of Tunica; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.


Simmons, Celia Joyce Brown

Celia Joyce Brown Simmons, 65, of Pope, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.

Simmons, born Feb. 15, 1939, to the late Horace Cecil and Hazel Lucille Branch Brown, was a homemaker and a member of Hyland Heights Baptist Church in Memphis, Tenn.

Survivors include her husband Robert Doyle Simmons of Pope; one daughter Kimberly Dianne Simmons Blackburn of Southaven; three sons, Robert Cecil Simmons of Pope, Roger Doyle Simmons of Cantonment, Fla. and James Randy Simmons of Batesville; her mother Hazel Lucille Branch Brown of Batesville; two sisters, Norma Brown Johnson of Batesville and Dale Brown Kline of Horn Lake; one brother Daniel "Danny" M. J.C. Simon, 80, of Lambert, died Monday, June 7, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford of heart failure.

Services were Thursday at 2 p.m. at Blue Lake Baptist Church in Lambert. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Garden in Batesville. Rev. Jess Chadwick and Rev. Paul Blanchard officiated. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge.

Simon, born Oct. 15, 1923, was a retired mechanic and a member of Blue Lake Baptist Church. He was also a WWII U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include a daughter Kathy Simon Gibson of Lambert; two brothers, Paul Simon of Clarksdale and Edward Simon of Linton, Ind.; one sister Margie Shields of Clarksdale; and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jimmie Terry Simon. All memorials may be made to Blue Lake Baptist Church.

Marie Blackwood Simpson, 91, of Marks, died Monday, May 10, 2004, at Quitman County Hospital of heart failure.

Services are today at Ackerman United Methodist Church. Burial is in McCurtains Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Weir. Rev. Allen Simpson will officiate. Kimbro Funeral Home has charge.

Simpson, born Dec. 15, 1912, was a member of Lambert United Methodist Church, UMW and Quitman County Home Demonstration Club.

Survivors include three daughters, Margie Simpson Gilmer of Weir, Delorise Simpson of Miami, Fla and Sharon Simpson Smith of Marks; three sons, Thomas O. Simpson Jr. of Winterhaven, Fla., John Criss Simpson of Lambert and Johnny Simpson of Ackerman; four sisters, Louise Ferris of Corinth, Daisy Lollar of Eupora; Mary Carmen Crawford of Hernando and Ann Bigler of Houston, Texas; one brother Fred Blackwood of Flint, Mich.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and eight great great-grandchildren.

Irene Slater, 75, of Crenshaw, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at Desoto Baptist in Southaven of natural causes.

Slater was a retired cook.

Services were Thursday at Pleasant Grove M.B. Church. Burial was in Longtown Cemetery. Rev. Jackson officiated. Eddie Robinson and Son Funeral Directors had charge.


Smith, Anthony T. Sr.
Anthony T. Smith Sr., 42, formerly of Pontotoc, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Ropper North Medical Center in North Charleston, S.C.

Services are Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Good Shepard Church of God in Christ of Pontotoc. Burial is at Golden Family Cemetery in Pontotoc. Elder Robert Flemings will officiate. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc has charge.

Smith was born to Louise Golden of Pontotoc and Willie Smith of Batesville and he was a veteran of the Navy.

Survivors include his wife Brenda Smith of North Charleston, S.C.; one daughter Camile Smith of Portland, Ore.; two sons, Anthony Smith Jr. and Hollence Smith, both of Alongopo City, Phillipines Islands; one brother Terrance Smith of Pontotoc; grandmother Virt Golden of Beloit, Wis.; an adopted son Lee Wilkes Jr. of North Charleston, S.C.; and two grandchildren.

Doris Belk Smith, 91, of Batesville, died Friday, September 24, 2004, at Baptist Hospital North Mississippi in Oxford.

Smith, born Nov. 12, 1912, to the late Frank W. Belk Sr. and the late Bessie Mills Belk, was a retired school teacher from the Mississippi and Arkansas school systems, was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Stitchers Sewing Circle, a Sunday School teacher, former co-owner of Smith Cleaners, Keenagers and a member of the First Baptist Church in Batesville.

Services were Sunday at the First Baptist Church. Burial was in Batesville Magnolia Cemetery. Dr. Greg Johnston officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home had charge.

Survivors include her son James F. Smith of Batesville; grandchildren, James F. Smith Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., Todd Y. Smith of Olive Branch and Ellen Kergosien of Pineville, La. and eight great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Ray Smith, 56, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Pope, died Monday, August 23, 2004, at Methodist University Hospital.

Smith was a retired quality engineering manager, a graduate of Mississippi State University, a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.

Services were Thursday at Ridgeway Baptist Church. Burial was at Memory Hill Gardens. Memphis Funeral Home had charge.

He was preceded in death by his mother Vada Nelson Smith and his father Kenneth Ray Smith Sr.

Survivors include his wife Diane Smith; one daughter Aleah Smith of Memphis; two sisters, Frances Hardy of Southaven and Rhonda Smith Herd of Germantown, Tenn. and two brothers, B.D. Dubois of Oakland and Ronald Smith of Southaven.

Larry Ellis Smith, 52, of Oxford, died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at his residence.

Services were Sunday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Burial was in Sandy Creek Cemetery in Enid. Rev. Zannie Leland officiated. Eddie Robinson & Son Funeral Home had charge.

Smith, born June 5, 1952, was a custodian at Ole Miss and served in the Army.

Robert Gary "Smitty" Smith, 54, of Memphis, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004.

Smith was born Jan. 30, 1949, to the late Robert Lee Smith Jr. and the late Lila Faye Simpson.

Ruthie Aline Bullard Smith, 58, of Coldwater, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Desoto Baptist Hospital in Hernando.

Smith, born Oct. 26, 1946, to the late John Wesley Bullard and the late Lillie Aline Holland Bullard, was a homemaker.

Stewart L. Smith, 85, of Sardis, died Monday, September 6, 2004, at Desoto Baptist Hospital in Southaven.

Smith was a retired farmer and a member of Cedar Grove M.B. Church.

Tristan R. Smith, 15, of Courtland, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville.

Smith was born May 7, 1988, to Douglas Anderson and Shelia K. Smith.

Smith of Sardis and Douglas Anderson of Batesville; two sisters, Stevelasher Simpson of Courtland and Pamela Baker of Batesville; one brother Larry Flowers of Lambert; grandparents, Hattie Smith of Southaven and Shirley and John Wesley Battle of Batesville.


Smith, William Whitney "Whit"
William Whitney Smith, 74, of Greenville, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at King’s Daughters Hospital in Greenville.

Memorial services were Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Greenville.

Smith most enjoyed spending his time with family and friends and was an avid duck hunter and MSU fan. He donated his body to the University Medical Center for research in hopes of helping others. Caring for others was his greatest lifetime achievement, he loved his family and friends.

Survivors include three daughters, Billie Whit Purvis, Beverly Evans, both of Greenville, and Roberta Woodward of Meridian; one son Bobby Burkhalter of Batesville; two brothers, Bobby Smith of Greenwood and Eddie Smith of Meridian; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Billy and Edna Smith; and one brother Frank Hart Smith. All memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.


Spencer, James Alfred
James Alfred Spencer, 63, of Batesville, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at his residence of heart failure.

Services were Wednesday at Enid Lake Baptist Church in Enid. Burial was in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Pope. Mr. Randy Willis officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Spencer, born Jan. 19, 1941, to the late Shirley Lee and the late Amma Mae Lilly Spencer, was a metal worker for Fulerton Metal.

Survivors include four sons; two daughters; two sisters, Reba Spencer Bradshaw of Missouri and Joanne Spencer Grant of Batesville; one brother Billy Spencer of West Virginia; and numerous grandchildren.


Stephens, Felix Norman
Felix Norman Stephens, 51, of Batesville, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at Desoto Baptist Hospital in Southaven.

Services were Monday at Locke Station Baptist Church. Burial was in Batesville Magnolia Cemetery. Rev. Paul Middleton officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Stephens, born Aug. 18, 1953, to Billie Jean Arendale Stephens Sossaman and the late Eddie Eugene Stephens, was a resort builder, a member of Oakland Baptist Church, harvested grain over half of the U.S.A., a licensed insurance agent, built and designed El Refugio Nature Resort in Yalobusha County, a cattle rancher, world traveler, owner and captain of the Loyola Sail Boat- sailed the high sea, spoke Spanish fluently as a second language and proud to be a soldier and defend his country in the U.S. Marines during the early 70’s.

He was preceded in death by William "Reggie" Stephens, Xavier "Zay" Stephens, Joe Neil Stephens and Redonda Jean Watson.

Survivors include his step-father Jim Sossaman of Batesville; his mother Billie Jean Arendale Sossaman of Batesville; one son Slade Alexander Stephens of Pearl and one brother Danny L. Stephens of Meridian and two grandchildren, Gabriel Archer Stephens and Patrick Felix Stephens.


Stevens, W. Calvin
W. Calvin Stevens, 71, of Sardis, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at his residence.

Services were Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Union Baptist Church in Sardis. Burial was in Union Baptist Cemetery. Rev. Bob Hickey officiated. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

Stevens, born on Feb. 14, 1932, to the late John C. Stevens and Gladys Riales Stevens, was a self-employed carpenter and a member of Union Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife Pauline Wright Stevens of Sardis; two sons, Chuck Stewart Stevens of Lexington, Tenn. and Calvin "Skip" Stevens of Shady Grove; his mother Gladys Stevens of Sardis; two sisters, Freada Kennedy and Ouida Kennedy, both of Sardis; five brothers, Larry Stevens, J.W. Mary Hortense Hudson Still, 89, of Batesville, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.
Still, born May 31, 1915, to the late Emma Brown and William Peach Hudson, was a housewife and a mother. She graduated valedictorian from Mt. Olivet High School in 1933, was a member of First United Methodist Church, Batesville Woman’s Club, Explorers Bible Study, Truth Seekers Sunday School Class and The Eastern Star.

Services were Tuesday at First United Methodist Church. Burial was in Batesville Magnolia Cemetery. Rev. Russell Fletcher officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

She was preceded in death by her husband J.V. "Buck" Still.

Survivors include three sons, Lee Hudson Still Sr. of Batesville, David Thomas Still of Kent, Wash. and Steven Earl Still of Pope; one daughter Jimmie Carol Still Durr of Iwaki, Japan; one sister Katherine Hudson Hentz of Batesville; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Lou A. Daniel Stith, 88, of Batesville, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, of heart failure.

Services were Monday at Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary Service Chapel in Swainsboro, Ga. Burial was at Youmans Cemetery in Swainsboro, Ga. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Stith, born on July 8, 1915, to the late Charlie and the late lalla Poston Daniel of Coffee County, Ga., was a retired salesperson.

Survivors include one daughter Faye Ann Stith Rich; two brothers, Prentice Daniel of Willacovchee, Ga. and Tillman Daniel of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Stone, born Dec. 24, 1924, to Eugene Caroll Stone and Willie Mae Cox Stone, was a retired dentist, a member of First Untied Methodist Church and a pilot in WWII while serving in the Army Air Corps.

Survivors include his wife Eva Joy Stone of Batesville; three daughters, Susan and husband, Dr. Tom Tuggle of Athens, Ga., Amy and husband Tommy Florence of Courtland and Sally and husband Ted Freeny of Oxford; one brother Dr. Carroll Stone of Oxford; seven grandchildren, Eve Florence Sprouse of Hernando, Emily Freeny of Oxford, Kate Florence and Will Florence, both of Courtland, John Tuggle and Elizabeth Tuggle, both of Athens, Ga., and Leslie Freeny of Charlotte, N.C..

Strong, born May 19, 1970 to Earnest Johnson of Batesville and the late Georgia Strong, was a member of New Bethlehem M.B. Church.

In addition to his father, survivors include one sister Diane Strong of Batesville; and four brothers, Bobby Strong of Grenada, Ronnie Strong, Earnest Johnson Jr. and Richard Johnson, all of Batesville.

Stroup, born, Nov. 1, 1950, to the late J.C. Tedford and the late Necy Turner Tedford, was employed by Wal-Mart in Batesville and was a member of Pittsboro Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by a brother James Ray Tedford.

Survivors include her husband Jerry Stroup of Pope; one son Jerry Shane Stroup of Oxford and one sister Sally Harper of Collingswood, Tenn. 


Stroupe, Willard G.
Willard G. Stroupe, 88, of Batesville, died Wednesday at Baptist Desoto in Southaven of heart failure.

Services were Saturday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel in Batesville. Burial was at Blackjack Cemetery in Batesville. Rev. Bishop Paul Roberts officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Stroupe, born April 2, 1915, to the late Rufus Pinkney and the late Ombra Stokes Stroupe, was a retired construction worker.

Survivors include his wife Margie Lucile Bevell Stroupe of Batesville; five daughters, Peggy Jean Bolen, Barbara Ann Helmes, Jeanette Hennings, Marilyn Kay Ware and Patricia Dale Stevens, all of Batesville; two sons, Billy Gordon Stroupe of Batesville and Jimmy Donald Stroupe of Hurst, Texas; one brother Phillip Stroupe of Memphis; 24 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Joyce Arnold.


Sullivan, Bill

Bill Sullivan, 68, of Longview, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at a local medical center.

Services were Thursday, May 20, 2004, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial was in Rosewood Park Cemetery. Father Suresh Samalia officiated. Rader Funeral Home had charge.

Sullivan, born Feb. 16, 1936, to William Allen and Alice Logan Sullivan, worked in the natural gas field for Southern Cross, a subsidiary of the Spear Group of Norcross, Ga. He served his country in Germany, Korea and Vietnam.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years Rita Lock Sullivan; three daughters, Bobbie Joyce Knudsen, Rita Kay Banks and Betty Louise Sullivan; one son Ralph Billie Sullivan; two brothers, Ed Sullivan and Jimmy R. Sullivan; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
    


Swain, Kenneth J.
Kenneth J. Swain, 72, of Jackson, died Friday, September 4, 2004, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.

Swain was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Korean War, for which he received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his service. He was also a member of Pear Orchard Baptist Church.

Visitation is today from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Natchez Trace Funeral Home in Madison. Services today at 2 p.m. at Natchez Trace Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oresta and Nellie Johnson Swain and a sister Nona Tallant.

Survivors include his wife Marian Weaver Swain of Jackson; one daughter Patricia Riley of Atanta, Ga.; one son Kenneth W. Swain of Jackson; one sister Nell Sanders of Oxford; one brother Johnny Swain of Oxford and two grandchildren.
