Sanders, born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Allie Arendale, attended Draughm’s Business College in Memphis, Tenn. in 1949. She was a retired Civil Service employee having worked as a medical supply clerk, an active member of First Baptist Church of Fairhope, Ala. and Thomas Hospital Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Frank Sanders.
Survivors include two daughters, Norvelle Sanders and Sheila Watson, both of Fairhope; one sister Billie Jean Sossaman of Batesville; one brother W.C. "Dub" Arendale of Batesville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Georgie Harmon Sawyer, 80, formerly of Batesville, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004.
Memorial services were Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Middletown, Ohio. Burial was in Woodside Cemetery. Rev. Karen Haak officiated. Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home of Middletown, Ohio had charge.
Sawyer was active in the Sorosis Club, Middletown Garden Club, Butler County Medical Auxiliary, Wildwood Golf Club, Middletown Tennis Club, Browns Run Country Club, Middletown Duplicate Bridge Club and a volunteer for many organizations mainly Middletown Symphony, Arts in Middletown, Middletown Library, American Cancer Society and Hospice of Middletown.
She was a graduate of Mississippi University for Women, with majors in bacteriology and chemistry. She worked as a chemist for City Service Laboratories in Lake Charles, La. for a year before moving to Ohio. She was employed by Proctor & Gamble for five years while living in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Survivors include one son James L. Sawyer of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Anne Bradley Sawyer of Edgartown, Mass. and Georgie Elizabeth Sawyer of Portland, Ore.; and five grandchildren.

Scallorn, born Jan. 30, 1917, to the late Robert Lee and the late Tencil Merriman Scallorn, was a retired supervisor for Sardis Luggage Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a mason.

Scates, born April 20, 1935, to the late Lyman and June Lewter Scates, was a retired technician for Bellsouth and a member of Temple Baptist Church in Memphis.

Shearer, born Mar. 15, 1935, to the late Edward Boyd and the late Dolly Ruth (Dalton) Shearer, was the publisher and editor of the North Mississippi Herald in Water Valley. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Woodland Hills Baptist Church where he served as music director.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Kilgore Shearer of Water Valley; one son Dr. James E. Shearer of Las Cruces, NM; and two brothers, Paul Milton Shearer of Panacea, FL and John Thomas Shearer of Independence, MS.

He was preceded in death by one brother Floyd Collins Shields and one sister Florence Shields Mitchell.

Services were Sunday at the First Baptist Church. Burial was in Batesville Magnolia Cemetery. Dr. Greg Johnston officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home had charge.

Kenneth Ray Smith, 56, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Pope, died Monday, August 23, 2004, at Methodist University Hospital.
Smith was a retired quality engineering manager, a graduate of Mississippi State University, a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.
Services were Thursday at Ridgeway Baptist Church. Burial was at Memory Hill Gardens. Memphis Funeral Home had charge.
He was preceded in death by his mother Vada Nelson Smith and his father Kenneth Ray Smith Sr.

Smith, William Whitney "Whit"
William Whitney Smith, 74, of Greenville, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at King’s Daughters Hospital in Greenville.
Memorial services were Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Greenville.
Smith most enjoyed spending his time with family and friends and was an avid duck hunter and MSU fan. He donated his body to the University Medical Center for research in hopes of helping others. Caring for others was his greatest lifetime achievement, he loved his family and friends.
Survivors include three daughters, Billie Whit Purvis, Beverly Evans, both of Greenville, and Roberta Woodward of Meridian; one son Bobby Burkhalter of Batesville; two brothers, Bobby Smith of Greenwood and Eddie Smith of Meridian; and nine grandchildren.

James Alfred Spencer, 63, of Batesville, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at his residence of heart failure.

Spencer, born Jan. 19, 1941, to the late Shirley Lee and the late Amma Mae Lilly Spencer, was a metal worker for Fulerton Metal.

Stephens, born Aug. 18, 1953, to Billie Jean Arendale Stephens Sossaman and the late Eddie Eugene Stephens, was a resort builder, a member of Oakland Baptist Church, harvested grain over half of the U.S.A., a licensed insurance agent, built and designed El Refugio Nature Resort in Yalobusha County, a cattle rancher, world traveler, owner and captain of the Loyola Sail Boat- sailed the high sea, spoke Spanish fluently as a second language and proud to be a soldier and defend his country in the U.S. Marines during the early 70’s.
He was preceded in death by William "Reggie" Stephens, Xavier "Zay" Stephens, Joe Neil Stephens and Redonda Jean Watson.
Survivors include his step-father Jim Sossaman of Batesville; his mother Billie Jean Arendale Sossaman of Batesville; one son Slade Alexander Stephens of Pearl and one brother Danny L. Stephens of Meridian and two grandchildren, Gabriel Archer Stephens and Patrick Felix Stephens.

Still, born May 31, 1915, to the late Emma Brown and William Peach Hudson, was a housewife and a mother. She graduated valedictorian from Mt. Olivet High School in 1933, was a member of First United Methodist Church, Batesville Woman’s Club, Explorers Bible Study, Truth Seekers Sunday School Class and The Eastern Star.
Services were Tuesday at First United Methodist Church. Burial was in Batesville Magnolia Cemetery. Rev. Russell Fletcher officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.
She was preceded in death by her husband J.V. "Buck" Still.

Stith, born on July 8, 1915, to the late Charlie and the late lalla Poston Daniel of Coffee County, Ga., was a retired salesperson.

Sullivan, born Feb. 16, 1936, to William Allen and Alice Logan Sullivan, worked in the natural gas field for Southern Cross, a subsidiary of the Spear Group of Norcross, Ga. He served his country in Germany, Korea and Vietnam.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years Rita Lock Sullivan; three daughters, Bobbie Joyce Knudsen, Rita Kay Banks and Betty Louise Sullivan; one son Ralph Billie Sullivan; two brothers, Ed Sullivan and Jimmy R. Sullivan; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Swain, Kenneth J.
Kenneth J. Swain, 72, of Jackson, died Friday, September 4, 2004, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.
Swain was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Korean War, for which he received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his service. He was also a member of Pear Orchard Baptist Church.
