Work is coming along in anticipation of the opening of Batesville’s new Lowe’s store. A Lowe’s spokesman said current plans are to open the store on Dec. 5 followed by grand opening activities on Dec. 10. Two Retail Firms Eye B’ville

| Two new-to-Batesville tenants are working with developers of the new Tri-Lakes Shopping Center but officials aren’t at liberty to release their names yet, said Jim Chambers of Southstar L.L.C., Brentwood, Tenn.
If they sign contracts the center will be full and the businesses will join two other new-to-Batesville businesses there – Mi Pueblo restaurant and Dollar Tree.
Meanwhile, another business is vacating the old Wal-Mart shopping center area in favor of the new location near the new Super Wal-Mart.
Sally Beauty Supply has signed a lease for space in Tri-Lakes Shopping Center, Chambers aid.
It joins other existing city businesses that are moving to the center. They include Okun’s, Cato, and Friedman’s Jewelers.
Sally’s will occupy 1,600 square feet between Cato and Dollar Tree, Chambers said. Assuming Sally officials approve construction drawings construction on that space should begin within the next couple of weeks.
The new strip mall contains 30,000 square feet.

BFD firefighters and other rescue personnel gingerly lift an injured person to an awaiting stretcher following a Thursday collision at noon on Hwy 6 just west of First Security Bank. The jaws of life were used to free the victim. Details of the crash were not available by press time.

Con Artists Rip Off Woman

| Con artists were busy last week when a woman fell victim to a "pigeon drop" scam and lost $63, said Batesville Police Department Major Tony Jones.
"I don’t know why people fall for these scams but they do," Jones said.
Typically a pigeon drop involves one person first approaching a potential victim and convincing the victim to take him or her to another location, Jones said. Once there, someone posing as a stranger, but who is really part of the scam, joins them.
The victim is convinced to put some money together with the scammer’s money in order to gain even more money, he said. Then the con artists leave.
In this case, the woman was left holding the "money" that turned out to be an envelope of paper.

Hospital Bidders Get New Directive
"Fairness" Waiver Request Issue

To make sure there’s "no possible perception of unfairness," entities interested in buying or leasing Tri-Lakes Medical Center are to include qualification waiver requests as part of their response.
A letter to that effect has gone out to those who have expressed an interest in buying or leasing the hospital, said Assistant City Attorney Colmon Mitchell and J.C. Burns of Burns Development Group, Ridgeland.
Seven entities, Burns said in an interview last week, are interested but in the end "all may not respond" with a proposal.
The proposal deadline is 2 p.m. on Oct. 23. They are to be submitted to Mitchell.
Tri-Lakes Medical Center is owned 60 percent by Panola County and 40 percent by the City of Batesville and is run by a hospital board appointed by the supervisors and city board.

A Batesville man offered his recommendation on the Tri-Lakes Medical Center to the Board of Supervisors Monday morning.
Ed Allen told the supervisors he is impressed in the turnaround of the hospital since the new administration took over in July.
"There was a time when the hospital was referred to as the slaughterhouse," he said. "In fact, just a year ago, I wouldn’t have taken my dog to that hospital."
Allen said his opinion of the hospital changed when he received treatment for a blood clot.
"The morale at the hospital is better than I can ever remember," he said. "I was very impressed and happy with the service I received while I was under doctor’s care at Tri-Lakes," he said.
Allen said county and city leaders should allow hospital administrator Dr. Bob Corkern and his company to purchase the hospital.
"It is time for the county and the city to stop playing politics and start looking at what is in the best interest of the people," he said.

Coats for Kids

| With fall in the air and winter not far behind it’s time to help those who need a coat. The Junior Auxiliary of Batesville is conducting a Coats for Kids drive and needs your donations for its success.
New and gently-worn coats may be placed through Oct. 31 at drop boxes at Wal-Mart, the Panola County Health Department or Riteway Cleaners on Van Voris.
