Primary One Week Away … Many Hopefuls Vie for Nominations

A total of 49 candidates will be battling for nominations to 13 offices during the primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 5. The general election is Nov. 4.
The most contested posts in the county will be Chancery Clerk with seven contenders for the office being vacated by the retiring Sally Fisher. Incumbent Coroner Donna Stevens has five opponents for her post.
Panola County Circuit Clerk said of the nearly 20,000 registered voters, he expects about 8,000 of them to cast ballots during the primary.
Improved Rating Means Lower Cost of Fire Insurance Mt. Olivet Fire District No. 4

A court-ordered mediation session was set to take place in U.S. District Court in Oxford at 9 a.m. today in an attempt to settle the lawsuit filed against the city by James S. Whitaker.
At primary issue is the location of a road and Whitaker’s claims that the city breached a contract which he contends caused him to lose the opportunity to sell land for the new Wal-Mart Supercenter and to develop his property.
The federal suit was filed in April 2001, by Whitaker who owns about 60 acres just east of where the new Civic Center is being built.
City Attorney Colmon Mitchell said the ruling in a similar lawsuit filed by Whitaker in state court was that "the city acted appropriately."

Milton Childs spent Friday afternoon at the Catfish Run’s stop at the Factory Stores at Batesville and after looking at several cars found this one that is 10 years his senior.
County Completes Road Repair; Citizens Present Petition Anyway

Some homeowners and residents of Pine Lake Drive presented the Panola County Board of Supervisors Monday with a petition for road repair.
But county crews had repaired the damaged road over the weekend.
According to the petition, Pine Lake Drive underwent extensive grading and widening in preparation for Panola County’s paving program.
"The road underwent extensive widening and grading to get it ready, for what we were told was paving," Barbara Hardin said during the meeting.
One resident, Karl Hardin who owns a cabin in the area, said a section of Pine Lake Drive North washed out because of heavy rains a few months ago.
"The road washed from the inside out," Barbara Hardin said.
