Stores Contract With New Center
More Occupancy Pact Sign-ups Near

Two new businesses, Dollar Tree and Mi Pueblo restaurant will be among the occupants of the new Tri-Lakes Shopping Center behind Back Yard Burgers and facing Wal-Mart.
Another business, Cato’s, will move from its present location to the new center, said Jim Chambers of Southstar L.L.C. in Brentwood, Tenn., developers of the 30,000-square-foot strip mall now under construction.
And, four additional contracts are out for signatures or final negotiations as occupants of the center, Chambers told The Panolian. Those are a mix of new businesses to Batesville and relocations.
"As soon as we get those signed, we’ll be glad to release the tenant’s names," he said.
Chambers said Mi Pueblo is a small Mississippi chain with the Batesville restaurant marking the "fourth or fifth one."
If the weather cooperates, Chambers said the center should open in August "in time for back to school."
Heavy spring rains have set construction back about two weeks but Chambers said the contractor, J.E. Crain Co. of Nashville, Tenn., is putting in "extra hours" in order to make up for lost time.

"Normally, writing tickets is not our priority," said Major Tony Jones, "but speeding has gotten out of hand lately and we have had lots of citizen complaints." Jones said one special speeding target will be drivers on residential streets.

Renovated Library Officially Dedicated
Memorial Plaque Given
in Honor of Hunt Howell

| A ribbon cutting ceremony made everything "official" at the recently-renovated and expanded Batesville Public Library.
Helping to host the event was Bobbie Pounders, president of the Friends of Batesville Public Library.
Executive Director of the Mississippi Library Commission, Sharman Smith, served as featured speaker. Smith is a former Batesville resident and a graduate of Mississippi College for Women in Columbus.
"I found an old friend in the library," Smith said, making reference to her family’s move from Lambert to Batesville where she didn’t know anyone. The library gave her comfort.
"It was different then, than the people who use it now," Smith said. "The library lets you explore new ideas."
Several lawmakers were present including State Rep. Warner McBride, of Batesville, State Sen. Nolan Mettetal of Sardis, and Batesville Mayor Bobby Baker.
"It’s a wonderful occasion," Baker said.
Friends of the Batesville Public Library presented a memorial plaque to the family members of the late Hunt Howell, former owner and publisher of The Panolian, for his devoted service to the library. His widow, Annie Glenn Howell, accepted the plaque, along with their son, Rupert, and his wife, Rita, their grandson, John Howell, Jr., and his wife, Jennifer.
