Foot Bridge Finished at SP Stadium
and Sidewalk Work Begins

Robert Money (l) was watching as the rest of the South Panola maintenance crew was putting the finishing touches on the foot bridge Thursday morning which leads to the stadium. Working on the bridge were (l to r) Glen Glover, Gerald Jordan, Mike Williams and Erin Cadena. Other workers are continuing the work on the stadium in the background.

Ever wonder how the concrete got so smooth? The crew from Manning Concrete spread concrete around the tree in front of Batesville Jr. High which the sidewalk to the stadium will run around. The concrete was poured by MMC Thursday morning. The Manning crew dug a square section out around the tree between the asphalt of the road and the parking lot and put a circled area around the tree. The circle will contain flowers planted by the South Panola horticulture department.

Work is continuing on the new home side of the South Panola stadium after the weather halted work some days this week.

Also, work has picked up for the areas surrounding the new side. Concrete was poured Thursday morning around the tree which will be in the middle of the new sidewalk down to the stadium.

The tree was obviously a point of discussion, according to South Panola maintenance department supervisor, Mike Williams.

The sidewalk will go around the tree and make a curving approach to the newly constructed bridge. Cutting the tree down was not really an option, according to Williams.

A flower bed will go around tree for a more aesthetic appeal, Williams said.

The bridge has been reinforced and was finished Thursday morning also by members of the South Panola maintenance staff which includes Williams, Gerald Jordan, Erin Cadena, Terry Williams, Glenn Glover, Robert Money, James Ballentine and Teresa Sturgis.

North Panola sponsored a jamboree with three other teams Tuesday evening. Byhalia, Coldwater and Coahoma County came to town for some serious spring football action.

The team’s games consisted of two 15 minute halfs.

Coahoma County and Coldwater tangled in the first scrimmage match. Coahoma won that match up 6-0.

Next North Panola tangled with Byhalia which was in its second year of existence. North Panola had very little trouble with the Indians and won 22-6.

Both teams had its share of fumbles, but North Panola took the brunt of penalty flags.

North Panola converted its first fumble recovery to a 29 yard touchdown reception by Jarrell Lantern. With the two point conversion, North Panola led 8-0.

Vonketrick Reed recovered another Indian fumble and the Cougars went on to score on a one yard run by quarterback Robert Glover. The two-point conversion failed.

On the Cougars’ next possession, backup quarterback Albert Johnson completed a 70-yard touchdown pass to Travis Howard. With the two-point conversion the Cougars had their 22-0 lead.

The Cougars had their hands full with Coahoma County in the second game. Penalties again hurt the Cougars as they were marched back up the field further and further from the goal line.

Coahoma scored first on a nine yard run, but the Cougars stopped the two-point conversion which ended up being a good thing.

The Cougars got their payback on a 45 yard touchdown reception from quarterback Robert Glover to Lantern. North Panola’s two-point conversion failed.

At this point, the weather turned and brought thunder and lightning. The game was called while the two teams were tied 6-6.
