The North Delta Green Wave golf team won the AA State title Thursday, May 1. The win advanced the team to the overall state championship which will be played today in Meridian. The North Delta golf team won the North State Tournament held in Grenada Monday, April 28. The win advanced the team to the AA State round Thursday, May 1, but the scores were not available at presstime.
At the North Delta Athletic Banquet Tuesday, April 29, golf head coach Mickey Aldridge updated what the golf team had done this year.
Tripp Sanders and Jeremy Aldridge are the two seniors on the team. Other team members are Scott Powers, Drew Baker, Will Crowley and Clint Egbert.
North Delta won the North Half Tournament with a score of 298. Other teams and scores include Leake 318, Manchester 333, Bayou 334, Heritage 335, Kirk 336, Canton Academy 339, Oak Hill 351, Benton Academy 387, Carroll 395 and West Memphis, Ark. 490.
Scoring for North Delta were Crowley and Baker, 73 each; Aldridge 74, Powers 78 and Egbert 80.
The team has won five of the six tournaments it has played in this year. The lone lost was in Clarksdale.
Team members Baker, Crowley and Aldridge have each medaled twice this year. The total strokes for those three are Aldridge, 514; Crowley, 515; and Baker, 517.
If North Delta wins the AA Tournament, they will advance to the State Overall Tournament Tuesday, May 6, in Meridian.

Football Teams Turn Out for Spring Practice

 Phil Douglas, son of Gladys Douglas of Batesville, and the late A.M. Douglas, was recently named to coach the North girls in the 38th annual North-South All-star game.
The game will be played July 17 at Mississippi College in Jackson.
Douglas is in his ninth season at Independence High School and 29th overall in coaching. He has posted 480 wins as a head coach, has been named coach of the year nine times and has carried 11 teams to the state tournament.
Douglas was selected as the Mississippi Association of Coaches coach-of-the-year for the state in 2002.
He is the winningest coach in school history at Independence High School and becomes the first girl’s coach to coach in the high school all-star game from Independence. He is married to the former Nancy Durham, who teaches special education at Independence and coaches junior high girls basketball and varsity girls’ track. Nancy’s teams have posted a 51-5 record over the past four years at Independence High School. |

North Delta Advances
to AA Tennis Tournament

 North Delta’s No. 1 singles tennis player Currie Martin advanced to the AA State Tournament in Jackson Wednesday, May 7. In this photo, he returns a ball at North State on Wednesday, April 30.
Martin defeated Wes Hill from Heritage 6-2/6-3. He finished second in the North State tournament, losing to Steven Shields of Oak Hill 6-0/6-1.
Also playing in the North State tournament was Andrew Wood, not pictured. Wood lost to Chris Hammerbacher of Heritage 6-4/7-6. |

Fisherman Receives Good Friday "Miracle" Help

BATESVILLE – A worse tragedy was averted by the help of a "miracle."
"She saved my baby," said Virginia Coleman, referring to her husband Riley Coleman, who was helped by Cathy Carter.
Virginia Coleman related the story of the Good Friday, April 18, rescue.
Riley Coleman was fishing on Engineering Point at Sardis Lake. He turned around to go get some minnows because the fish were not biting. He fell and slipped 20 feet on some sliding rocks.
Riley landed face down in the water. There were two big rocks on each side of him. He broke his right ankle in three places and his left ankle in one place.
"Riley said he screamed for help until he felt he couldn’t scream any more," Virginia said. "Then he tried one last time and Cathy Carter heard him."
Carter was at Engineers Point picking up garbage.
"She heard him and then came running," Virginia said. "She pulled him out and turned him over and sat with him. She is a little woman and he weighs 220 pounds."
Virginia said Carter called for help and stayed with him.
"They were going to put him on a stretcher, but he said no," Virginia said. She was not clear why Riley did not want to be put on a stretcher. She said she thought he was afraid they would slip and drop him.
After Riley refused the stretcher, the Park Rangers on the scene called for a boat.
In addition to sending out a heartfelt thanks to Carter, Virginia wanted to thank the responding Rangers Scott Harrison, George Harris, Alton Pollan, Mike Dulin and Lee Rowsey.
The Colemans have been married for 42 years.
"This goes to show there are still some wonderful people in the world," Virginia said. "We just want to thank them. It really touched me she went down there to help my husband. I just thank God for her."
