Contract Let for City’s Part
of Marina Job

It’s all coming together in Sardis for the marina project with the award this week of the contract for the infrastructure job.
The $1,029,408 million contract went to Jay Bearden Construction Company of Richland which submitted the lowest of six bids.
"All the bidders are qualified," Bruce Stephens, senior project engineer with Waggoner Engineering Inc., of Jackson said at a special city board meeting Tuesday night. "My company has experience with this contractor and I’m confident they can do the work and do so in a timely fashion."
The other bidders, in next low to highest costs, were Malouf Construction Corp. of Greenwood, Hemphill Construction Co. Inc., of Florence, Chancellor Brothers, LLC of Cordova, Tenn., L&T Construction Inc. of Hernando and W&W Contractors, Inc. of Sardis. Their bids ranged from $1,146,104 million to $1,532,110.
The infrastructure project will include a road, parking lot, boat ramp, wastewater treatment and percolation system, lighting, etc., according to the bid sheet.
Meanwhile, work continues on final contract negotiations with the Corps of Engineers and with the Skipper Marinas, the company that will build and operate the marina.

| New Miss Hospitality to Get Crown |

Seven young women from Batesville and Sardis will vie for the title of Panola County’s Miss Hospitality when the winner of this year’s honor is announced during the Panola Partnership’s Annual Awards Banquet.
During the banquet, scheduled for Tuesday, April 29, at 5:30 p.m. at the Sardis National Guard Armory, outgoing Miss Hospitality Ava Drake will crown her successor who is chosen by a panel of judges based on a 20-second commercial about Panola County and an interview.
Competing in the event are Ashley Beard, Brooke Carmichael, Emily Coy, Amanda Dawkins, Emily Kilpatrick, Joanna McKenzie and Michelle Moake.
Beard, the daughter of Hal and Cindy Beard of Sardis, is a 2002 graduate of North Delta in Batesville and currently attends the University of Mississippi where she is majoring in elementary education.
Carmichael, the daughter of Wanda Lawrence Carmichael and Mark Winston Carmichael of Sardis, is a 2002 graduate of North Delta School in Batesville and currently attends the University of Mississippi where she is majoring in education.
Coy, the daughter of Tony and Denise Coy of Batesville, is a 2002 graduate of South Panola High School, and currently attends Northwest Mississippi Community College where she majors in nursing.
Dawkins, the daughter of Jimmy and Rosemary Dawkins of Sardis, is a 2002 graduate of North Delta School and currently attends the University of Mississippi where she majors in education.
Kilpatrick, the daughter of John and Marcia Kilpatrick of Batesville, is a 2001 graduate of South Panola High School and currently attends Northwest Mississippi Community College where she majors in business management.
McKenzie, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William McKenzie III of Batesville, will graduate from South Panola High School in 2003 and has earned acceptance into the early entry pharmacy program at the University of Mississippi.
Moake, the daughter of Eric and Marilyn Moake of Batesville, is a 2001 graduate of North Delta School in Batesville and currently attends Mississippi State University where she majors in accounting.
This year’s Miss Hospitality will represent Panola County in the state pageant in Hattiesburg scheduled for July 25-26.
