Local and state officials were on hand Friday for a groundbreaking ceremony at the future site of the National Guard Training and Readiness Center on Keating Road.
The land for the new center was given by the City of Batesville.
Mayor Bobby Baker explained the Guard cannot purchase property so the city gave eight acres of land for the project.
"When we all work together, we can get a lot of work done," Baker said. "And that is what happened. The city, state and federal leaders came together to make this a reality."

Wal-Mart, Hospital Area
Traffic Count Tops 8,000 |

| Anyone driving in the area of House-Carlson Road and Highway 6 East knows there’s lots of daily traffic in and around Wal-Mart and the hospital.
But a recent city traffic count put the numbers to it, according to Street Superintendent Randy Collins.
From Feb. 24-March 2 all traffic entering House-Carlson road was counted – just the entering traffic was counted – not those that exited, Collins said.
The road gives access to Tri-Lakes Medical Center, Wal-Mart Supercenter, Back Yard Burgers and the new Civic Center construction site.
The count tallied the following number of vehicles:

| Sardis Library Open House Set |
| The Sardis Public Library will celebrate the completion of the Library’s expansion and renovation by having an Open House and Ribbon-Cutting Sunday from 2 p.m.-4 p.m.
The public is invited to tour the expanded facility and enjoy refreshments during that time.

| "Fight nights" Back This Week |
| The popular "Fight for a Cure" event will be back this year with action on tap at 7 p.m. Thursday and 6:30 p.m. Friday at Batesville’s livestock arena.
And to make sure all is well for spectators, City Street Supt. Randy Collins said Monday, "We’re working on the road and cleaning up the arena."
Citgo Petroleum and the Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Alpha at the University of Mississippi are again sponsoring the event with the help of Huron Smith Oil Company.
The "Fight for the Cure" to benefit MDA is a boxing tournament that consists of students and locals. As a special added attraction, the Cover Girls will appear at 9 p.m. during the Friday matches.
Don and Rhandy Smith at Huron Oil Company said sponsors and ticket buyers alike " … are making a difference in the lives of those affected by muscular dystrophy.
All proceeds benefit ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and help fund local support groups, annual clinic visits, funding for wheelchairs, communication devices and research.

| SpringFest Signs Ingram Hill |

A second act has signed on for SpringFest May 17 and 18.
According to Batesville Main Street Manager Colleen Clark, college favorite Ingram Hill is scheduled to play the second day of the festival at approximately 7 p.m.
Previously, it was announced that country singer Steve Azar will perform. He’ll also be on stage May 17.
Fans in this area are probably most familiar with Ingram Hill because of their club performances around Oxford, Grenada and Senatobia.
All four members of the group are graduates of the University of Memphis who grew up listening to Elvis, and just about anything else.

| Chore Scam Still Concerns BPD |

Though there have been no new reports of home repair/chore scams since last week, Batesville police warn citizens to be watchful and wary.
Last week, an elderly couple on Eureka Road were victims of such a scam when what was to have been a $30 brick washing job, turned into one for $4,030 when the con man talked victims into letting him fill out their check.
Within a few minutes, he was at a local bank cashing it. Cameras caught him there and police are hopeful an arrest will happen.
This week, scammers with the same mode of operation were bilking victims in Memphis, said BPD Major Tony Jones.

| Event To Help Fire Victim Family |
| Friends of the Dennis Pearson family hope to help get the family back on its feet in the wake of a house fire that destroyed "everything but the clothes on their backs," said one of the organizers of a pot luck dinner and house-warming.
The event is Friday, March 21, at 7 p.m. at the Batesville Lions Club building.
