Board Grants Conditional Use Permit for Auto Shop
A conditional use permit has been granted by the city to allow for operation of an auto detail and repair business at 350 Highway 51 North.
The Mayor and Board of Aldermen earlier this month gave unanimous approval to the request made by Jimmy Bishop for the property that’s owned by Doyle and Carolyn Collier.
The permit is conditioned upon no more than six vehicles being parked outside the building at any one time, that no mechanical work can be done outside and that no vehicle may be parked there for more than 14 days.
If any of the conditions are not met, the permit will be revoked, aldermen voted.
Volunteer Firefighter Count May Drop State Outlines New Certification Rules

State-mandated certification requirements could cause Panola County fire departments to see a decrease in volunteers.
All volunteer first responders, most of them emergency medical technicians and firefighters, will be required to pass a national certification exam to obtain certification.
First responders will also be required to keep their skill current by taking continuing education courses.
Panola County Civil Defense Coordinator Son Hudson said he believes departments will lose firefighters when the state goes to required certification for first responders.
"There is no doubt we will lose some firemen, but it will result in better qualified personnel in the long run," he said.
Mike Roberts, a certified first responder with the Courtland Fire Department said he isn’t in favor of the requirements.

Sardis Marina to Open in June

Skipper Marina wants to have the Sardis Lake Marina open by June, and city leaders are doing what they can to make that a reality.
During a meeting last week, Waggoner Engineering representatives gave Sardis Mayor Richard Darby and the Board of Aldermen an update on the marina project.
‘skipper has its floating structure for the marina on order," Bruce Stevens of Waggoner said. "The marina will hold over 200 boats."
Sections of the floating structure have begun being delivered and are being housed at Engineer’s Point.
City-Engineers Could Ink Lease Soon
The lease between the City of Sardis and The United States Corps of Engineers for the site of the Sardis Lake Marina is near completion, and Skipper Marina is ready to begin work.
"There has been a lot of work on the lease," Jackson attorney Alan Moore said during a special called meeting between Sardis Mayor Richard Darby, the Board of Aldermen and Waggoner Engineering.
"The lease has not been adopted yet, but we are confident it will be soon."
Once the lease between the city and the corps is complete, Skipper Marina will sign a sub-lease for the property that will house the marina portion of the project.
"We cannot enter into a sub-lease until the lease for the property is signed," Moore said.
Moore told the aldermen the Corps of Engineers has been given a deadline of March 3 to complete its review of the proposed lease.
If the lease is signed in its present form, the city will have the property for 75 years.
