Man Guilty in Cable Thefts
BY KATE B DICKSON
EDITOR

A guilty plea to two counts of stealing cable services from Cable One has landed a Batesville man on the city’s work program for 128 days.

Reginald Henderson, 35, who lives on Patton Lane, entered the plea Wednesday in Batesville City Court, according to BPD Major Tony Jones.

Though Henderson was convicted on a misdemeanor, Jones said the crime "is a felony" and will be prosecuted as such in the future.

"Cable service theft is costing Cable One a fortune," Jones said. "The company will prosecute vigorously."

City Judge Bill McKenzie also sentenced Henderson to one year suspended jail time, Jones said. It’s time he’ll have to serve if he doesn’t successfully complete the work program days.

Henderson, Jones said, was damaging Cable One property and "hooking up other people" so they could get free cable and charging them to do so.

New Retail Centers in Works for City
Developers Like Batesville
Market; Its Growth Potential
BY KATE B DICKSON
EDITOR

Two new retail centers – one associated with the new Lowe’s store and the other behind Back Yard Burgers – are set to go up in Batesville.

That’s the word this week from two developers who see Batesville as a good market for growth.

Dirt work was set to start behind the restaurant this week on the new strip mall which will house 10-12 retailers near the new Super Wal-Mart.

"We’re just waiting on a few days of dry weather to get started," said developer Jim Chambers of Southstar L.L.C. in Brentwood, Tenn.

Chambers said he can’t release a list of tenants just yet but said some contracts have been signed " … and we’re in negotiations with a half dozen others.

"There will be a mixture of new retailers and possibly some relocations," Chambers said.
