Tigers Upset Byhalia
BATESVILLE – The South Panola Tigers stunned themselves and the basketball world by defeating Byhalia 47-45 in the final regular season game, Thursday, Feb. 6.

Not only that, South Panola held Byhalia to its lowest score of the season.

The Tigers accomplished this by slowing the tempo of the game, according to Tiger head coach Wilbert Beard.

With less than five seconds left on the clock, Tiger Will Poole hit a 3-pointer deep in the corner and tied the game 45-45.

Tiger Rickey Wright stole the ball at center court and scored on the layup with .5 seconds left on the clock for the Tiger win.

This was a complete turn-around from the first quarter, when the Tigers were down 9-0. The Tigers found their niche and went on a 9-2 scoring spree. The Byhalia lead was cut 11-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Corey Blackburn, who scored 12 points in the game, scored five of the first quarter points. Both teams scored 11 points in the second quarter, but Byhalia held a slight two point lead at halftime, 22-20.

Leading Tiger scorer, Lorane Burgess, scored six points in the second quarter.

The scoring was hot and heavy in the third quarter as the Tigers outscored Byhalia 15-13 to tie the score at the end of the quarter 35-35. Burgess put up six of those points in the third quarter. Blackburn had four points in the third.

SP Ladies Down Byhalia for Second Time
BATESVILLE – The South Panola Lady Tigers ended the regular season on a high note by defeating Byhalia 61-51, Thursday, Feb. 6.

This was a big coup for the Lady Tigers as they were able to sweep Byhalia this year. The Lady Tigers defeated Byhalia 57-52 on Jan. 24.

South Panola opened with a field goal by Stephanie Avant, but Byhalia opened its scoring with a 3-pointer a couple of minutes later.

The lead jumped back and forth throughout the first quarter, but was tied 11-11 with 16.5 seconds left. A Shoni Fondren field goal gave the Lady Tigers a one point lead at the end of the quarter, 12-11.

The first part of the second quarter looked like the first quarter with tie scores and lead changes. South Panola took the lead 17-14 on a three by Fondren with 6:23 left in the half.

The Lady Tigers forced turnovers and turned them into field goals and took a 27-14 lead with 4:06 left in the first half. At halftime the Lady Tigers led 34-22.
