The South Panola team placed third in the meet.

Hollis Hoskins, 308 pounds, blew everyone away placing first in his class and earning Best Lifter in the heavyweight division (198-super heavyweight class).

The Best Lifter honor goes to the lifter who lifts the most weight, pound for pound, according to how much the lifter weighs and rarely goes to someone in one of the heavier weight classes of the division.

Hoskins broke all meet records and hefted an unofficial state bench press record of 425 pounds. He squatted 635 pounds and deadlifted 605 pounds for an awesome total of 1,665 pounds, according to head coach Arnie Oakes.

Quinton Hankins also broke a meet record bench 335 pounds. He squatted 445 pounds and deadlifted 480 pounds placing third in the 275 pound class with a total of 1,260 pounds.

BATESVILLE – There is some more news from some South Panola seniors during this recruiting season.

Tiger fullback Javar Pollard said Wednesday, Jan. 29, he has verbally committed to play for the University of Memphis Tigers.

Pollard had 104 carries for 578 yards and four touchdowns for South Panola during the 2002 season.

Wide receiver Justin Lee has visited Jackson State University, home of the Tigers, and hopes to make that his college home.

Wide receiver Mario Chapman says he will probably play at Northwest Community College.

Defensive lineman Eric Foster has his sights set on University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The players will decide and sign National Letters of Intent with the college and universities of choice Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Verbal commitments by the players are non-binding.

Players for the Alabama/Mississippi and Bernard Blackwell All-star football games are also selected this date.

The Alabama/Mississippi game will be played June 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala.

The Bernard Classic is set for July 18 at Madison Central at 7:30 p.m.

Tigers Defeat Eagles 60-58

South Panola’s Corey Blackburn scored a career-high 26 points against Byhalia Friday, Jan. 24.

BATESVILLE – There was some hot shooting in Tiger town Tuesday night.

The South Panola Tigers pulled out a two-point win over the Horn Lake Eagles in a do-or-die district game for both teams.

South Panola won 60-58 after Will Poole posted his second double-double, 14 points, 10 rebounds, in the last two games.

"We are a team now," said head coach Wilbert Beard. "We are finally cohesive. We are more focused and enjoy playing with each other more."
This was the Tigers’ first win since Nov. 26 when the Tigers defeated West Point on the road. This was only the team’s second win at home. The game against Horn Lake was played at South Panola instead of at Horn Lake.

The teams were running neck-and-neck in the first quarter, but Horn Lake took a 14-12 lead into the second quarter.

The Tigers squeaked out the top scoring spot in the second quarter, but were down 29-28 at halftime.

Laquita Hardy was the high scorer for the North Panola Lady Cougars, Tuesday, Jan. 28, as they once again defeated the Charleston Lady Tigers, 75-71.

Hardy scored 21 points, played solid defense and should have been given a ticket for the way she drove to the basket. Whether the lane was open or not, Hardy somehow found a way to connect. She also shot 4 of 6, from the free throw line.

The game was a close and exciting one right up until the end of regulation. The lead changed hands on several occasions.

The Charleston Lady Tigers clawed their way back from a six point deficit, the biggest lead in the game, but couldn’t hold on.

Otisha Porter sank a three-pointer with four seconds on the clock just before halftime, to give the Lady Cougars a 44-41 edge at the break.

"We owed them one," said assistant coach, Don Taylor.

The lead rotated throughout the contest. Robert Glover scored 25 points and Terry Walker had 29, with five 3-pointers. Glover and Walker were both on fire. They scored from everywhere, driving the lane, 3-pointer range and from the free throw line.
