Haley, Glenna J.
Glenna J. Haley, 79, of Buffalo Gap, Texas, died Sunday, May 4, 2003, at Hendricks Medical Center in Abilene, Texas, of natural causes.
Services are today at Buffalo Gap Church of Christ. Burial will be at the Buffalo Gap Cemetery with military honors under the direction of North’s Funeral Home in Abilene, Texas. Rev. Glen Dobbs is officiating.
Haley, born Oct. 11, 1923, was the widow of Jack L. Haley of Batesville. She returned to her hometown of Buffalo Gap shortly after his death in 1975. She was the daughter of the former Buffalo Gap mayor, Glenn E. Johnson and his wife Ella Harrison Johnson. Haley proudly served in the Pacific Theater with the United States Navy during World War II, as a gunnery instructor at Barber’s Point in Hawaii. Immediately upon discharge from the military, she and Mr. Haley were married and settled in his home state of Mississippi. Haley, was a long time employee of The Panolian, a gifted artist, author, and actress. She was deeply involved in community affairs in Batesville, and was the primary co-founder of the Batesville Art Mart and Fall Fest. In her later years, she helped to establish and maintain The Buffalo Gap Roundup, Buffalo Gap’s local newsletter, before illness forced her to retire. She was also a longtime member of the V.F.W. and was chosen Member of the Year on two separate occasions.
Survivors include a daughter Barbara Elliot of Pope; three sons, Scott Haley of Holly Springs, Mark Haley of Batesville and Glenn Haley of Abilene, Texas; three sisters, Joyce Glasgow and Peggy Brolls, both of Buffalo Gap, Texas and Loyce Campbell of Klamath Falls, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Haltom, John Thomas Sr.
John Thomas Haltom Sr., 60, of Indianola, died Friday, September 19, 2003, at Hospice Ministries.
Services are today at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. Burial is at Batesville Magnolia Cemetery at a later date. Card Funeral Home has charge.
Haltom was a graduate of Mississippi State University, attended the University of Mississippi Law School, attended the National Judicial College in Reno, Nev., a member of the Mississippi Bar Association and the Sunflower County Bar Association. He served as a private attorney, as City Judge of Indianola for 17 years, and as Administrative Hearing Officer at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman. He had also served as a Hearing Officer for the Employee Appeal Board. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Indianola, a member of Kiwanis Club, was a contributor to the Indianola Junior Basketball Association and sponsored a baseball player in little league. He often assisted his wife, Terry, in her work in welfare clients who needed a helping hand. His law background was also used in the same manner with needed pro bono work.
Survivors include his wife Terry Armstrong Haltom; one daughter Caroline Kathryn Gordon and husband Tom of Greenwood; one son John Thomas Haltom Jr. and wife Kerri of Downingtown, Pa.; two brothers, Robert F. "Bob" Haltom and wife Margaret of Batesville and Richard C. "Crick" Haltom and wife Colby of Kalamazoo, Mich. and two grandchildren Peyton Gordon and Samantha Haltom.
Hamilton, Bernard Gibson
Bernard Gibson Hamilton, 85, died Sunday, September 7, 2003, in Morehead, Ky.
A memorial service was Saturday, Sept. 13 on the campus of Morehead State University where he was a Professor of Languages for many years.
Hamilton was born in Franklin, Tenn. and spent his early childhood there before moving with his family to Enid.
Survivors include his wife Kozy Hamilton; two sons, Robert H. Hamilton of Atlanta, Ga. and Rick Hamilton of Nancy, Ky.; one daughter Rebecca Hamilton of Alva, Fla.; one sister Helen Nelson of Courtland; a host of nieces and a nephew.
Hamilton, Elizabeth Annie Mae
Elizabeth Annie Mae Hamilton, 88, of Batesville, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion M.B. Church in Batesville. Interment was at Shiloh Cemetery in Courtland. Rev. J.N. Mobley officiated services. Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc., was in charge.
Hamilton, born Sept. 7, 1914, to the late Nellie Rogers was a housewife and a member of Mt. Zion M.B. Church. She was also a member of the Panola Chapter No. 2 Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include one son, Rainey Hamilton of Detroit, Mich.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Willie Ed "Fat" Hamilton, 72, of Batesville, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital- North Mississippi in Oxford.
Services were Saturday at Spring Hill A.S.A. M.B. Church in Courtland. Burial was at Spring Hill A.S.A. Cemetery. Rev. Lewis Wilson officiated. Cooley’s Mortuary had charge.
Hamilton, born Dec. 27, 1930, to the late Ed Wiley and the late Fannie Facette, was a retired laborer, a member of Spring Hill A.S.A. Church, an usher and a Mason, Batesville Lodge #11.
Survivors include his wife Ruth E. Hamilton of Batesville; one son Isiah Morris of Batesville; four brothers, Elijah Hamilton and Bobby Hamilton, both of Batesville, L.T. Hamilton of Memphis and Riley Jones of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Bertha Boyd and Jennie Hamilton, both of Memphis; one granddaughter whom he raised Renee Boyd of Batesville; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Hardin, born to the late David Young and the late Ethel Wilkerson Young, was a nurse and a member of First Baptist Church.

Beulah Harris, 83, of Sardis, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.

Harris, born Dec. 8, 1919, to the late George and the late Betty Lee Harris, was a member of Shiloh C.M.E. Church and a homemaker.
She is preceded in death by three children, James Harris, Earl Salter and Fannie Salter.

Harris, born Nov. 20, 1913, to the late John Boothe and the late Leona Lewis Carothers, was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where she served on the Administrative Board, a member of the United Methodist Women and Truth Seeker’s Class, participated in the Explorer’s Bible study, a member of the Friends of the Library and was retired from the Bank of Batesville, now known as Union Planters Bank.
She is preceded in death by her husband Richard L. Harris.
Survivors include one son Richard L. Harris Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter Margaret H. Mason of Madison; three sisters, James C. Herron of Batesville, Sara Vance of Batesville and Nan Fontentot of Metairie, La.; one brother Smylie Carothers of Basken, La.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Hastings, born Sept. 2, 1933, to the late Albert Dewitt Little and the late Bernice Jones Little, was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lambert, graduated from the University of Mississippi, taught school for over 30 years, was an elementary principal at North Sunflower Academy, and a member and past president of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Jennifer Sueann Melton Neal-Hays, 34, of Huffman, Texas passed away Saturday, June 28, 2003, at the Memorial Hermaon Hospital in Houston, Texas.
Jennifer was born April 27, 1969 in Marks. She grew up in Dayton, Texas and Nettleton and was a long time resident of Huffman, Texas and worked in sales of New Truck Accessories.
A graveside service was held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery in Eastgate with Brother David Miller of First Baptist Church of Huffman, Texas officiating. Services were under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton, Texas. Pallbearers: Wade Burns, Robert Burns, Robert Burns Jr., Michael Gains, Warren Southers, Larry Maness, Martin Anderson and honorary pallbearers were Wayne Roulston and Charles Adams (Charlie Brown).

Haynes, born Sept. 18, 1917, to the late James Robert Haynes Sr. and the late Lillian Dyer Haynes, was a Veteran of WWII, member of Hopewell Baptist Church in Water Valley, was a Mason and a Shriner and worked for Tennessee Gas and Construction.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Moorman Haynes of Batesville; one son James Robert Haynes III of Arlington, Texas; two daughters, Wanda Carol Robison and Kelley Magee, both of Batesville; one brother Paul Haynes of Germantown; three sisters, Marguerite Thomas of Water Valley, Artell Warren of Saint Petersburg, Fla. and Mary Alice Meadows also of Saint Petersburg, Fla. and eight grandsons.

Haywood, born Aug. 24, 1913, was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Green M.B. Church.

She is preceded in death by her two sons, Lewis Haywood and Earnest Haywood.

Hearington was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and was affiliated with the Haven House of Oxford.
He is preceded in death by his brother Charles Hearington.

Heath, born May 27, 1935, to the late Ernest Avery and the late Ella Lewis Heath was a retired self-employed upholsterer, served in the Tennessee Air National Guard and was a member of Barton Heights Baptist Church in Memphis.
Survivors include two sons, Frank Rudie Heath of Southaven and Steve R. Heath of Courtland; one brother Ernest Avery Heath of Memphis; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Carson Helms, 78, died Monday Jan. 27, 2003, at home in Courtland of heart failure.

Helms, born Jan. 29, 1924, in Panola County to John I. and Gertrude Fowler Helms, was currently employed as a engineer for McBride Engineering for whom he worked 34 years. He was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran of WWII and also served as a Panola County Sheriff from 1964 to 1967.
Survivors include one daughter, Janice Helms Wardlaw of Madison; five sons, Ron Helms, Clay Gaines, and Danny Gaines all of Courtland, Falcom Helms of Pope; and Edward "Earl" Helms of LaVonia, Ga.; one sister, Freddie Hentz Johnson of Courtland; two brothers, Milton Hentz and Bobby Hentz of Courtland; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Alvin Herring, 84, of Courtland, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at his residence.
Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Salem M.B. Church. Burial will be at Salem Cemetery. Rev. Larry Itson will officiate. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.
Herring, born June 24, 1918, to the late John Wesley Herring and the late Bernena Jackson, was a retired repairman for Dunlap & Kyle, a member of Salem M.B. Church in Courtland, a US Army Veteran of WWII, a Deacon, a Sunday School teacher and a choir director.
Survivors include his wife Verlena Herring of Courtland; one daughter Linda Sisson of Redford, Mich.; one brother Carl Edward Herring of Memphis; one sister Exie M. Henderson of Cleveland, Ohio; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.4

James Edward Herrin, 79, of Batesville, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at his residence.
Services are today at 1 p.m. at the Batesville Church of Christ. Burial is at Batesville Magnolia Cemetery. Robert Rawson and Michael Bates will officiate. Dickins Funeral Home has charge.
Herrin, born Aug. 12, 1924, to the late Amos Mabry Herrin and the late Lura Lee Wells Herrin, was a retired Riverboat Captain and a local business owner and member of Batesville Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife Lillie Rebecca "Becky" Herrin of Batesville; one daughter Doris Jean Allredge of Tupelo; one son James Edgar Herrin of Rowlett, Texas and four grandchildren.

Nona Finley Shook Herron, 100, of Sardis, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Sardis Community Nursing Home.
Services were Thursday at the Batesville Presbyterian Church. Burial was at Batesville Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Henry Williamson officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.
Herron, born Nov. 2, 1902, to the late Soloman M. Shook and the late Nona Denman Shook, was a member of the Batesville Presbyterian Church, a book keeper and a teacher.
She is preceded in death by her husband Leonard Herron, Sr. and her daughter Virginia Herron Smith.
Survivors include one son Leonard C. Herron, Jr. of Milford, Conn.; one daughter Elizabeth ‘Lib’ Herron Vinson of Courtland; one sister Janey Shook; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and her close friend Lynn Jones of Drew.

Chester Lee Hickey, 66, of Batesville, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.
Services were Wednesday at Courtland Church of Christ. Burial was at Forrest Memorial Park. Mr. Hal Johnson and Rev. Robert Hickey officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.
Hickey, born, Oct. 27, 1937, to the late Glover Chester Hickey and the late Mattie Lillian Arnold Hickey, was a member of Courtland Church of Christ, church treasurer for 36 years, a serviceman for Dowdle Gas Company and retired from Dowdle Gas Company.
Survivors include his wife Paula Ann Brewer Hickey of Batesville; one son David Hickey of Batesville; one brother Rev. Robert Hickey of Senatobia; one sister Ruth Harmon of Olive Branch; three grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.

Charline J. Hill, 79, of Fulton, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at North Mississippi Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. at Senter Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Tommy Winders officiated the service. Burial followed in Campbelltown Cemetery near Guntown.
Hill, daughter of the late Demp and Lottie Bell Parham Johnson, was born April 17, 1923, in Prentiss County. She was a retired nursing aid and a member of the Fulton First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Danny Hill, of Batesville and Tim Hill of Nashville, Tenn; five sisters, Elois Storey of Rock Springs, Ga., Mary Love Jumper of Lafayette, Ga., Joyce Pannell and Gail Johnson, both of Guntown, and Charlotte Mead of Ecru; one brother, Thomas Johnson of Guntown; and five grandchildren Sonya Kisner, Justin Hill, Jonathan Hill, Ana Hill and Jered Hill.

Holstine, born Jan. 11, 1932, to the late James Henry and Sadie Ray Denley Holstine, was a retired truck driver.

Howell, daughter of the late Chester and Ora Gullett Jarrett, was born July 18, 1918. She was a member of Adonai Baptist Church in Water Valley and a retired Wurlitzer factory worker. Her husband, Lawrence Howell, preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Eugene Howell of Batesville; one daughter, Elizabeth Brisco of Southaven; one brother, Harold Hood of Beebe, Ark.; four children and 14 great-grandchildren.

Hubbard, born Nov. 29, 1910, to the late Jim Hubbard and the late Mary Green Hubbard was a farmer and a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include four brothers, Dave Hubbard and Rodney Hubbard, both of Victoria, Texas, Harley Hubbard of Charleston, and Jerry Hubbard of Clarksdale; three daughters, Pearl Hill and Mary Ann Laney of Tillatoba, and Ella Guest of Drew; 24 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Huston, born January 17, 1921, to the late George and Johnnie Simmons, was a homemaker.

Willie Elizabeth Hutching, 70, of Sardis, died Jan. 3, 2003, at her home of heart failure.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 6, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church. Rosary service was held Sunday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery in Sardis. Father Jack Kurpas officiated services. Dickins Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Hutching, born April 22, 1932 to the late Joseph Allen Tigner and Becky Ann Bullard Tigner, was a homemaker and a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include two sons, Danny Hutching of Hernando, and Jacob Trotter of Sardis; two daughters Rhonda Hutching of Sardis, and Donna Jones of Pope; one sister, Lee Taylor of Sardis; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Hutching.
