Jerry Lee Bailey, Sr., 65, of Water Valley, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Funeral services were Thursday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. at Oak Grove C.M.E. Church in Bruce, Miss. Interment was at Zion Springs M.B. Church Cemetery in Bruce.
Bailey, born November 30, 1937 in Calhoun County to the late Ed Neely and the late Ester Bailey, was a member of Oak Grove C.M.E. Church and a musician at the church. He also served as trustee of the church.
Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Bailey of Water Valley; two daughters, Linda Bailey and Shelia Bailey, both of Water Valley; four sons, Jerry Bailey, Tommie Bailey, Akeem Bailey, and Don Bailey, all of Water Valley; four brothers, John Bailey of Bruce, Roger Bailey of Gary, Ind., Sylvester Bailey and Charles Bailey both of Bruce; 10 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Ballentine, Ella Shaw
Ella Shaw Ballentine, 85, formerly of Batesville, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, in St.Louis, Mo.
Services were Saturday at Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. with interment at Mt. Gillion Cemetery in Sardis. Rev. Walter Newsome officiated services. Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. had charge.
Ballentine, born March 1, 1917, in Batesville, to the late Mrs. Lela Brassell and the late Mr. Walter Shaw. Ballentine was a house wife and member of Christ Pilgrim Rest M.B.Church in St. Louis, Mo.
Survivors include four sons, Willie E. Ballentine and Walter Ballentine both of St. Louis, Mo., Eugene Ballentine of Lexington, Ky., and Thomas Ballentine of St. Louis Mo.; three daughters, Hattie Stunson, Lavonzell Holt, and Modena Holman all of St. Louis, Mo.; two sisters, Nola Galimore of Batesville, and Kate Brown of St. Louis Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Ballentine, born to the late Jim Henry Draper and the late Anna Shaw Draper, was a housewife and a member of Mt. Gillion M.B. Church.

Rick Bankston, 46, of Como, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003 at his residence.
Services were Sunday at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial was at Nesbit Cemetery. Pate-Jones Funeral Home had charge.
Bankston served in the Navy.

Baronowski, born April 1, 1920, to the late Burford Ferrell and the late Mable Legge Ferrell, was a retired Deputy City Clerk for the town of Sardis.
She is preceded in death by her husband Leonard G. Baronowski.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Smith of Baton Rouge, La. and Myra McGehee of Independence; two sons, Lenny Baronowski of Collierville, Tenn. and Jim Baronowski of Batesville; one brother Van Ferrell of Sardis; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Leacy Velma Barnett, 95, of Sardis, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Sardis Community Nursing Home.

Barnett, born May 9, 1908, to the late Dee Johnson and the late Daisy Thorne Johnson, was a member of Pilgrim’s Rest Baptist Church, a member of the Homemakers Club, a WMU, a Sunday School teacher and a homemaker.
She is preceded in death by her husband Jack Barnett.
Survivors include three sons, Charles Lamar Barnett, Sr. of Courtland, Bobby Barnett of Batesville and Hugh Barnett of Courtland; one sister Lillian Childs of Batesville; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Bean, born April 8, 1933, to the late Oliver Sherman "Pete" Cox and the late Murlie Street, graduated from Batesville Colored High School. She was a homemaker, babysitter and a member of the Shiloh M.B. Church. She was a deaconness, usher, a member of the program committee and the Sunday School Treasurer until her illness.
Survivors include her husband, Master Bean of Courtland; three daughters, Linda Bean, Myra Bean and Sandra Bean, all of Courtland; one son Master R. Bean of Courtland, one grandchild Danielle Bean of Courtland; one stepdaughter, Flora Anderson of Sledge; one brother Bolton Street of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister Neva Jean Street of St. Louis, Mo.; and seven step-grandchildren.

Billington was born Sept. 23, 1930, to the late Turner and Willie Mae Hatley of Tunica, accepted Christ at an early age and served on the Mother Board and Pastor’s Aid Club at Pleasant Grove M.B. Church in Crenshaw, where she remained a faithful member until death.

Bishop, born Sept. 12,1911, to the late Isaac McKay and Clara Agnes Ash McKay, was a teacher, homemaker and a member of Highland Heights Baptist Church in Memphis. She enjoyed being a volunteer at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
She is preceded in death by her husband James Vernon Bishop, an infant daughter, Anita Jo, a daughter, Lynda Kay Bishop Grigory and a brother, Isaac McKay Jr.
Survivors include one daughter Carole Bishop Davidson of Sardis; three sisters, Lola McKay Gestring of Mesquite, Texas, Onisca McKay Gibbons of Lake St. Louis, Mo. and Irene M. Survivors include one daughter, Penny Braden Durham of Sardis; one step-daughter, Sandra "Sammy" Gray Deane of Sardis; three brothers, Raymond Braden and George Braden both of Memphis and James Braden of Sardis; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

Dorothy K. Braswell, 94, widow of James G. Braswell, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Braswell, daughter of the late Henry and Cora Wardlaw Kimbrell who once were residents on Terza Road, was preceded in death by her sister Virginia K. Smith.

Hugo Louis "Papps" Brenner, 94, of Memphis, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at St. Francis Nursing Home.
Stateroom services are Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at Memphis Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Burial is at Eagle Mausoleum Memory Hill Gardens. Memphis Funeral Home had charge.
Brenner, born Dec. 4, 1908, served as Lt. Colonel of St. Louis District Ordinance, U.S. Army, and received an engineering degree from the University of Missouri. At the age of 17 he built his own car; he designed a machine to make custom filled shoe supports that were used by the U.S. Army during WWII; he designed a line of automobile repair tools that were marketed and sold until the war closed his factory. After the war he designed and marketed metal toys. He was manager of Medart Locker Company in Greenwood, Batesville American in Batesville and owner of Brenner Tool and Manufacturing in Cleveland. During the war he served as Lieutenant Colonel of the St. Louis District Ordinance office where he was in charge of 80 gage inspectors and supervised the manufacture of gages in eight factories located in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. He was deacon and elder at Greenwood, Cleveland, Batesville and Long Beach Presbyterian Churches. He was married to Ida Catherine Spencer Brenner for 62 years. She preceded him in death.
Survivors include one son Robert S. Brenner of Memphis; one daughter Carol Brenner Ingram of Batesville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Brist, Frederick W. Sr.
Frederick W. Brist Sr., 70, of Pope, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at his residence of heart failure.
Memorial services were Saturday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. The body was cremated. Rev. Jimmy Bryant officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.
Brist, born Feb. 5, 1933, to Frederick W. and Peggy Brist II, was a member of Poplar Avenue Baptist Church and was retired from the real estate industry.
He is preceded in death by his wife Quida Jean Renfroe Brist.
Survivors include his son Frederick W. Brist Jr. of Pope and one grandson Frederick W. Brist V.
Brooks, Essie Maude
Essie Maude Brooks, 102, formerly of Enid, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at San Bernardino Medical Center in San Bernardino, Calif.
Services were Thursday at Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church in Enid. Burial was at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Enid. Rev. William Johnson officiated. Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. had charge.
Brooks, born Jan. 28, 1901, to the late Addie Anderson, was a housewife and a member of Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church.
Survivors include a great nephew Donald Walken of Chicago, Ill. who cared for Mrs. Brooks.

Clarence E. Brown, 59, of Sardis, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Greenwood Lefore Hospital in Greenwood.

Brown, born Jan. 31, 1944, to the late Clarence Brown and the late Minnie Draper, was a retired construction worker and a member of Mt. Gillion M.B. Church.

Dorylan "Dee" Brown, 71, of Kilmichael, died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at his residence of cancer.
Services were Tuesday at Poplar Springs Baptist Church near Kilmichael with interment at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Pope. Rev. Joseph Sansing and Rev. Brad Herod officiated. Oliver Funeral Home had charge.
Brown, the son of Doris Wilma Brown of Pope and the late Fay Brown, was an industrial sewing machine mechanic, member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his mother, Doris Wilma Brown of Pope; five daughters, Amanda D. Brown of Winona, Wanda Lenard of Montgomery, Ala., Leah Faye Turner of Phoenix City, Ala., Tammy Bross of Crenshaw and Paula Davis of Sumrall; three sons, Dorylan Monroe Brown Jr. of Batesville, Steve Brown of Batesville and Wesley Bradley of Kilmichael; one brother, Billy Fay Brown of Pensacola, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Fay Brown, his brother, James Brown, and two sons, Phillip Bradley and Kevin Brown.

Melba Henley Brown, 77, of Clarksdale, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Northwest Regional Medical Center of cancer.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. at National Funeral Home. Interment was at Memorial Gardens. Rev. Joe Brown, Rev. Donnie Brown and Rev. Floyd Cooper officiated services. National Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Brown, born May 11, 1925, in Eupora was a homemaker and a member of Rena Lara Baptist Church. She was also a member of Rena Lara Widows Club.

Thelma Etta Sanders Brown, 87, of Pope died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi of heart failure.

Brown, born Oct. 19, 1915, to the late William A. Sanders and the late Emma Crowder Sanders, was a homemaker and a member of Chapel Hill Methodist Church.

Christie Lynn Browning, 16, of Plano, Ill., died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, as a result of an auto accident.

Browning, born Dec. 6, 1986, to Jeanette R. (Smith) Browning of Plano. and David K. Browning of Pontotoc, was a home-schooled student and was a very upbeat and caring young lady. She loved spending time with her family and many friends.
Survivors include her parents, Jeanette Butler of Plano. and David K. Browning of Pontotoc; three brothers, David Jeremy Browning of Pontotoc, and Kyle and Justin Butler, both of Plano; grandparents, Dean and Eva Smith of Plano and Charles and Geneva Browning of Ecru; and one great-grandmother Lois Browning of Batesville.
She was preceded in death by one uncle Curt Browning.

Gene D. Brunt, 62, of Sardis, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at his residence.

Samuel David "Davy" Bryant, III, 7, of Batesville, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital, North Mississippi of heart failure.

Bryant was born June 22, 1995, in Clarksdale to Olivia M. Phelps and Samuel David Bryant Jr., both of Batesville.

Buckley, Leon
Leon Buckley, 51, of Boston, Mass., died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003.
Services were at Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury, Mass. Rev. Waters officiated. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery in Boston.
Buckley, born Jan. 19, 1952, in Charleston to Lorine and the late John Buckley, graduated from Patton Lane High School in Batesville. He was president of the Hi-Y Club and played on the basketball and football team. He attended Quincy Jr. College and Northeastern University. He was a Boston Police Officer for over 20 years.
Buckley professed his religion early in life as a member of the Popular Springs Baptist Church. He sang in the choir and taught Sunday school.
He is survived by his wife, Lena Buckley and children Michelle Leon, Ernest and Shari Buckley and one grandson. He is also survived by brothers; John Buckley of Chicago, Ill., Harvey Buckley of Boston, Mass., and Robert Buckley of Mass.; sisters, Erma Buckley of New York, Mary Buckley of Miami, Fla., Vera Buckley of Boston, Mass., Dr. Alice Buckley of Detroit, Mich., Viola and Arbie Jo Buckley of Miss.

Burgess, born April 22, 1980, to Lorane Burgess and Shirley McKinney Burgess, was the assistant manager for Foot Action in Memphis, a member of Second Concord M.B. Church and a choir member.
Survivors include her parents, Lorane and Shirley Burgess of Batesville; two brothers Shedrick McKinney of Waterloo, Iowa and Lorane Burgess Jr. of Batesville and her grandparents, J.D. and Annie McKinney of Batesville.

Burnett, born July 11, 1914, to the late Thomas and Cornelia Nickles, was a housewife and a member of Longcrest Baptist Church in Memphis.
She is preceded in death by her husband H.W. Burnett and son Donald Burnett.
Survivors include four daughters, Eleanor Wilkerson of Memphis, Judy Snell, Glenda Burnett and Connie Burnett, all of Southaven; two sons, Glenn Burnett of Olive Branch and Paul Burnett of Longview, Texas; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Artanya M. "Sha" Butler, 29, of Horn Lake, died after an illness Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Methodist Central Hospital in Memphis.

Butler, born March 19, 1974, to Wesley Butler and Flora Baker Butler, was the co-manager at Wal-Mart in Southaven and a member of Cumming Street M.B. Church in Memphis.
Survivors include her mother Flora Butler of Batesville; her father Wesley Butler of Batesville; four sisters, Trixy Butler of Batesville, Shannon Butler, Priscilla Wallace, both of Charlotte, N.C. and Sturleen Morris of Oxford and one brother Taplis Butler of Batesville.
