Bailey, Jerry Lee Sr.
Jerry Lee Bailey, Sr., 65, of Water Valley, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Funeral services were Thursday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. at Oak Grove C.M.E. Church in Bruce, Miss. Interment was at Zion Springs M.B. Church Cemetery in Bruce.

Bailey, born November 30, 1937 in Calhoun County to the late Ed Neely and the late Ester Bailey, was a member of Oak Grove C.M.E. Church and a musician at the church. He also served as trustee of the church.

Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Bailey of Water Valley; two daughters, Linda Bailey and Shelia Bailey, both of Water Valley; four sons, Jerry Bailey, Tommie Bailey, Akeem Bailey, and Don Bailey, all of Water Valley; four brothers, John Bailey of Bruce, Roger Bailey of Gary, Ind., Sylvester Bailey and Charles Bailey both of Bruce; 10 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.


Ballentine, Ella Shaw
Ella Shaw Ballentine, 85, formerly of Batesville, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, in St.Louis, Mo.

Services were Saturday at Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. with interment at Mt. Gillion Cemetery in Sardis. Rev. Walter Newsome officiated services. Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. had charge.

Ballentine, born March 1, 1917, in Batesville, to the late Mrs. Lela Brassell and the late Mr. Walter Shaw. Ballentine was a house wife and member of Christ Pilgrim Rest M.B.Church in St. Louis, Mo.

Survivors include four sons, Willie E. Ballentine and Walter Ballentine both of St. Louis, Mo., Eugene Ballentine of Lexington, Ky., and Thomas Ballentine of St. Louis Mo.; three daughters, Hattie Stunson, Lavonzell Holt, and Modena Holman all of St. Louis, Mo.; two sisters, Nola Galimore of Batesville, and Kate Brown of St. Louis Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.


Ballentine, Josephine Draper 
Josephine Draper Ballentine, 93, of Sardis, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at Beverly Health Care.

Services are today at 1 p.m. at Mt. Gillion M.B. Church in Sardis. Burial is at Mt. Gillion M.B. Church Cemetery. Rev. Odell Draper Jr. will officiate. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Ballentine, born to the late Jim Henry Draper and the late Anna Shaw Draper, was a housewife and a member of Mt. Gillion M.B. Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Josephine Fondren of Sardis and Annie Ruth Hand of Batesville; two sons, James Ballentine of Sardis and Alex Ballentine of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Cecil Shorter and Ella Carol Fondren, both of Sardis; one brother Odell Draper of Sardis; her grandson that cared for her Joe Ballentine of Sardis; 30 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and a host of great-great grandchildren.


Bankston, Rick
Rick Bankston, 46, of Como, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003 at his residence.

Services were Sunday at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial was at Nesbit Cemetery. Pate-Jones Funeral Home had charge.

Bankston served in the Navy.

Survivors include his wife Treta Bankston of Como; mother Barbara Bankston Pierce of Nesbit; two daughters, Courtney Hamilton of Memphis and Cameron Harrington of Houston, Tenn.; three sons, Richard Bankston and Mike Campbell, both of Nesbit and Jeremy Noe of Memphis; two brothers, Kenneth Bankston of San Antonio, Texas and David Bankston of Coral Springs, Fla.; and one grandson.


Baronowski, Mildred Ferrell
Mildred Ferrell Baronowski, 83, of Batesville, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at Beverly Health Care in Batesville.

Services were Thursday at First Baptist Church in Sardis. Burial was at Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Sardis. Rev. Ray Legge, Rev. Kirt Germany, Rev. Jerry Sanford and Dean Wright officiated. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

Baronowski, born April 1, 1920, to the late Burford Ferrell and the late Mable Legge Ferrell, was a retired Deputy City Clerk for the town of Sardis.

She is preceded in death by her husband Leonard G. Baronowski.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Smith of Baton Rouge, La. and Myra McGehee of Independence; two sons, Lenny Baronowski of Collierville, Tenn. and Jim Baronowski of Batesville; one brother Van Ferrell of Sardis; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.


Barnett, Leacy Velma
Leacy Velma Barnett, 95, of Sardis, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Sardis Community Nursing Home.

Services are today at 11 a.m. at Dickins Funeral Home. Burial is at Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery. Rev. Wes Sherman will officiate. Dickins Funeral Home has charge.

Barnett, born May 9, 1908, to the late Dee Johnson and the late Daisy Thorne Johnson, was a member of Pilgrim’s Rest Baptist Church, a member of the Homemakers Club, a WMU, a Sunday School teacher and a homemaker.

She is preceded in death by her husband Jack Barnett.

Survivors include three sons, Charles Lamar Barnett, Sr. of Courtland, Bobby Barnett of Batesville and Hugh Barnett of Courtland; one sister Lillian Childs of Batesville; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Barr, Willie E. "Bro"
Willie E. "Bro" Barr, 62, of Batesville died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Baptist East Hospital-Desoto.
Funeral services are Saturday at 2 p.m. at New Province M.B. Church. Burial will be at New Province in Batesville. Rev. Jacob Hentz will officiate. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Barr born June 5, 1940, to the late Rogers William Barr and the late Nulene Henderson, was a retired laborer for Loden Property & Batesville Concrete and a member of New Hope M.B. Church.

Survivors include four sons, Michael Oliver, Willie Clyde Oliver, Barry Oliver, all of Batesville, and Edward Jerome Oliver of Holly Springs; three daughters, Cassandra Oliver, Shannon Oliver, both of Batesville, and Sheronda Brown of Canton, Ohio; one brother Floyd Junior Barr of Batesville; three sisters, Gloria Fondren, Bernice Holmes, both of Batesville, and Dorothy Davis of Chicago, Ill. and 12 grandchildren.
 


Beaird, Theda M.
Theda M. Beaird, 71, of Pope, died Monday, July 7, 2003 at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Graveside services were Wednesday, July 9. Burial was at Walker Memory Gardens in Jasper, Ala. Brother Delmus Anthony officiated. Collins-Burke Funeral Home had charge.

Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Brewer of Bartlett, Tenn. and Debbie Dye of Pope; one brother Ranney Coke of Ramer, Tenn.; two sisters, Dorothy Louise Seals of Cleveland and Mary Spencer of Corinth; four grandchildren and five great-grand children.


Bean, Dirus Aurelia
Dirus Aurelia Bean, 70, of Courtland, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare in Batesville.

Services will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, at Shiloh M.B. Church in Courtland. Rev. Carl Brown will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be held today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary.

Bean, born April 8, 1933, to the late Oliver Sherman "Pete" Cox and the late Murlie Street, graduated from Batesville Colored High School. She was a homemaker, babysitter and a member of the Shiloh M.B. Church. She was a deaconness, usher, a member of the program committee and the Sunday School Treasurer until her illness.

Survivors include her husband, Master Bean of Courtland; three daughters, Linda Bean, Myra Bean and Sandra Bean, all of Courtland; one son Master R. Bean of Courtland, one grandchild Danielle Bean of Courtland; one stepdaughter, Flora Anderson of Sledge; one brother Bolton Street of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister Neva Jean Street of St. Louis, Mo.; and seven step-grandchildren.

Two children preceded her in death Trevor and Nicole Bean.


Beanland, Minnie Webster
Minnie Webster Beanland, 93, formerly of Batesville, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at her residence.

Services were Wednesday at Spring Hill ASA Baptist Church in Courtland. Burial was at Spring Hill ASA Cemetery. Rev. Louis Wilson Jr. officiated. Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. had charge.

Beanland, born Sept. 22, 1910, to the late Arthur Webster and the late Alberta Means, was a member of Spring Hill ASA Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include six daughters, Burnice Money and Geneva Smith, both of Batesville, Bernell Stephen, Emma Lou Steen and Icey Rine Anderson, all of Memphis and Dorothy Milton of Milwaukee, Wis.; two sons, Robert Benner and Willie Edd Benner, both of Memphis; one brother Sam Means of Chicago, Ill.; four sisters, Katie P. Donahue of West Helena, Ark., Mary Jones and Agness Means, both of Green Cove Place, Pa. and Elzadia Beck of Sardis; 41 grandchildren; 93 great-grandchildren; and 24 great great-grandchildren.


Beaver, Eric Wayne
Eric Wayne Beaver, 31, of Batesville, died Saturday, September 20, 2003, in Crittenden County, Ark.

Services were Thursday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Forrest Memorial Park. Rev. Donald Mullins and Rev. Dale Beaver officiated.

Beaver, born Dec. 8, 1971, to the late Wayne Beaver and Naomi Rogers Beaver, was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include his mother Naomi Rogers Beaver of Batesville; one daughter Chesli Suzanne Beaver of Batesville and one sister Tammy Beaver Powell of Batesville.


Beavers, Bobby Joe
Bobby Joe Beavers, 63, of Sardis, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003 at Baptist Memorial in Oxford.

Services are today at 11 a.m. at C. O. Pate Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial is at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Beavers, a retired carpenter, was a veteran of the National Guard and a member of Hebron Baptist Church in Sardis.

Survivors include his wife Virginia Beavers of Sardis; one daughter Betty Johnson and one son William D. Beavers of Sardis; two sisters, Lorraine Davis of Courtland and Merle Herring of Charleston; two brothers, Cecil Beavers of Pearl and Wade Beavers of Senatobia.


Bell, Elizabeth
Elizabeth Bell, 83, formerly of Water Valley, died Jan. 17, 2003, at Holy Cross Hospital in Chicago, Ill., of natural causes.

Services were Saturday Water Valley Funeral Home Chapel and interment was at Green Gosha Cemetery.


Bell, Maggie Lee
Maggie Lee Bell, 69, of Crenshaw, died Wednesday, August 20, 2003, in Strayhorn.

Services were Saturday at the Church of God in Christ Headquarter in Clarksdale. Burial was at Heavenly Rest Cemetery in Clarksdale. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home had charge.

Bell was on the mother board and served in many other capacities as a member of Antioch Church in Christ in Tunica.

She is preceded in death by her husband Lee Edward Bell Sr.

Survivors include two daughters, Tangaree M. McKialy of London, England and Lulanda D. Bell of Fort Worth, Texas; eight sons, Edgar L. Bell of Killeen, Texas, Jimmie L. Bell of Fort Worth, Texas, Curtis M. Bell of Holly Springs, Christopher A. Bell of Elpso, Texas, John W. Bell, Derrell T. Bell and Levell T. Bell, all of Memphis and Tony O. Bell of Pheonix, Ariz.; one sister Estella Lambert of Tupelo; one brother Willie D. Steele of Gary, Ind. and 13 grandchildren.


Best, Eddie Paul
Eddie Paul Best, Sr., 60, of Pope, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, in his home of heart failure.

Services will be Friday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. at Willow Springs Assembly of God with interment at Forrest Memorial Park in Batesville. Rev. Tommy Darby and Rev. Dennis Cook will officiate services. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Best, born June 26, 1942, to Luther and Josie Mae Darby Best of Charleston, was disabled.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Cook Best of Pope; two daughters, Rhonda Best Roberson of Courtland and Tanya Best Hollingsworth of Pope; three sons, Mark A. Best of Tupelo, Ron Walls of Grenada, Eddie P. Best, Jr. of Pope; one sister, Betty Kaye Best of Oxford; one brother, Bobby Ray Best, Sr. of Oakland; and 11 grandchildren.


Betts, Ester Jones 
Ester Jones Betts, 88, of Oxford, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.

Services were Thursday at New Hope M.B. Church. Burial was in New Hope M.B. Church in Batesville. Rev. L.C Smith officiated. Cooley’s Mortuary had charge.

Betts, born April 3, 1913, to the late Samuel William Jones and the late Elizabeth Henderson, was a homemaker and a member of Brassell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

Survivors include one grandson Carl Allen Brassell, who was her caretaker, of Batesville; one granddaughter Ora Mae Conner, who was also her caretaker, of Batesville; one daughter Edna Faye Brassell of Jackson; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.


Billington, Earnestine Hatley
Earnestine Hatley Billington, 73, of Crenshaw, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, from a long term of illness.

Services were Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Crenshaw. Burial was at the St. Joseph M.B. Church Cemetery. Rev. Prez Jackson officiated. Delta Burial had charge.

Billington was born Sept. 23, 1930, to the late Turner and Willie Mae Hatley of Tunica, accepted Christ at an early age and served on the Mother Board and Pastor’s Aid Club at Pleasant Grove M.B. Church in Crenshaw, where she remained a faithful member until death.

Survivors include her husband William Billington of Crenshaw; one daughter Mildred Lester; five sisters, Beulah Wilbourn and Lillie Marshall, both of Crenshaw, Lula Ondias of Memphis, Inez Hatley of Evanston and Pearlene Gillispie of St. Louis; three brothers, Johnny Hatley of Crenshaw, James Hatley and Turner Hatley, both of Memphis; one granddaughter; one grandson and one nephew she raised Charlie Brice Jr.


Bingham, Arilla Lomax
Arilla Lomax Bingham, 67, of Como, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Baptist East Memorial Hospital.

Services are today at 1 p.m. at Cistern Hill M.B. Church in Como. Burial is at Cistern Hill Cemetery. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home has charge.

Bingham was a retired teacher with 35 years in Panola County schools, she was a church secretary, usher board, Sunday school teacher, vacation Bible school teacher, missionary society, a pastor’s aide, hospitality committee and a member of the Como Homemaker Club.

Survivors include her husband Louis Bingham; one daughter Angela Charissie Bingham of Memphis; two sons, Louis Bingham Jr. of Como and Terrence D. Bingham of Munich, Germany and two sisters, Ernestine Bridgforth of Como and Olivet Montgomery of Memphis.


Birdsong, Raymond Mack
Raymond Mack Birdsong, 75, of Oxford, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Mississippi Veterans Hospital in Oxford.

Services are Saturday at 2 p.m. at Walnut Baptist Church in Lambert. Rev. Jimmy Chapman will officiate. Dickins Funeral Home has charge.

Birdsong, born April 1, 1927, to the late Samuel Birdsong and the late Rena Chrestman Birdsong, was a WWII Navy Veteran and a farmer.

Survivors include two daughters, Gail Barton and Dianne Birdsong, both of Oakland; three sisters, Mary McNeil of Olive Branch, Zula Bush of Black River Falls, Wis. and Mae Calo of Chalmette, La. and one grandchild, Dani Ray Barton of Oakland.

Inez White Bishop, 87, of Oxford, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital.

Services were Thursday at Waller Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford. Burial was at Hopewell-Clasco Cemetery in Pontotoc. Rev. Jimmy Sockwell officiated. Waller Funeral Home had charge.

Bishop, a homemaker, was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Bulah Hosey of Magee, Clara Thomas of Bruce, Nina Percell of Trumann, Ark., and Rela Jackson of Oxford; four sons, Jimmy Bishop of Tillatoba, Donal Bishop of Oxford, Lyle Bishop of Mooreville and Kirby Bishop of Batesville; four sisters, Genero O’Neal of Covington, Tenn., Christeen Hellums of Vardaman, Ruby O’Bryant of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Shirley Carter of Hernando; two brothers, J.D. White of Northport, Ala., and Glen White of Marks; 30 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Claude Cayce Bishop.

Bishop, Verna McKay
Verna McKay Bishop, 91, of Sardis, died Saturday, August 30, 2003, at Sardis Community Nursing Home.

Services were Tuesday at John W. German Funeral Home in Hayti, Mo. Burial was at Number Eight Cemetery. Rev. Mike Melton officiated. John W. German Funeral Home had charge.

Bishop, born Sept. 12,1911, to the late Isaac McKay and Clara Agnes Ash McKay, was a teacher, homemaker and a member of Highland Heights Baptist Church in Memphis. She enjoyed being a volunteer at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

She is preceded in death by her husband James Vernon Bishop, an infant daughter, Anita Jo, a daughter, Lynda Kay Bishop Grigory and a brother, Isaac McKay Jr.

Survivors include one daughter Carole Bishop Davidson of Sardis; three sisters, Lola McKay Gestring of Mesquite, Texas, Onisca McKay Gibbons of Lake St. Louis, Mo. and Irene M. McKay of Orange, Calif.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and 12 nieces and nephews.

Black, Jessie Hubert
Jessie Hubert Black, 56, of Sardis, died Wednesday, September 10, 2003, at Desoto Baptist Hospital in Southaven.

Services were Sunday at Walton Chapel C.M.E. Church in Sardis. Burial was at Mt. Level in Como. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home had charge.

Black, was a steward of the church and a factory worker.

Survivors include his mother Mary E. Black of Sardis; one daughter, Jacqueline Jones of Batesville; one son Reginald Black of Batesville; one step-son Daryl Fondren of Batesville; five sisters, Freddie Conrad, Elvera Walton, both of Memphis, Thersa B. Ellison of Jackson, Doloris B. Woodard of Water Valley and Lynda B. Thomas of Memphis; six brothers, Johnny Cooper, James Black, Larry Black, Michael Black, all of Memphis, Sim H. Black and Robert Black, both of Detroit, Mich. and two grandchildren.


Bland, George
George Bland, 78, of Senatobia, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital.

Services were Thursday at New Ford M.B. Church in Senatobia. Burial was in Senatobia Memorial Cemetery. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home had charge.

Bland, a truck driver for Pettis Tobacco Company, was chairman of the deacon board and treasure of the church.

Survivors include one son George Bland, Jr. of Senatobia; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine G. Bland.


Boling, Gladys Louise
Gladys Louise Boling, 76, of Como, died Monday, May 12, 2003, at her residence of heart failure.

Services were Thursday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Longtown Cemetery in Crenshaw. Rev. R.D. Stump, Dr. Jim Howard and Mr. Tim Alsup officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Boling, born Nov. 11, 1926, to the late Will and Gerdrude Cardella Marshall Hardy, was a homemaker and a member of Senatobia Church of God.

She is preceded in death by two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband R.G. Boling of Como; one daughter Janice Boling Glover of Tunica; four sons, Larry Boling of Senatobia, Kenneth Boling of Tunica, Jimmy Boling of Sardis and Ricky Boling of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; one brother Kenny Hardy of Rena Lara; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.


Bolton, Margie Elizabeth Campbell
Margie Elizabeth Campbell Bolton, 74, of Batesville, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital North MS of heart failure.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 10, at 10 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at Blackjack Cemetery. Rev. Alan Kilgore will officiate services. Wells Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Bolton, born August 16, 1928, to the late James Jefferson and the late Lois Griffis Campbell was a retired supervisor of Panola Mills and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathy Bolton Krivacka of Moore, OK; two sons, Jimmy D. Bolton of Jonesboro, AR., and Ronnie L. Bolton of Batesville; four sisters, Robbie Campbell Hardy of Sardis, Jeffie Campbell and Betty Campbell Moore, both of Batesville, and Voncille Campbell Tarver of Oxford; two brothers, Sammie Campbell and James Campbell, both of Batesville; and 4 grandchildren.


Bowden, Earline Sellers
Earline Sellers Bowden, 67, of Hernando, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at her residence of heart failure.

Services were Monday at Moore Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Rev. Ed Spencer officiated. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

Bowden, born Jan. 31, 1936, to the late Vester Sellers and the late Alice Lewis Sellers, was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Southaven and a housewife.

Survivors include her husband James Bowden of Hernando; one son Jim Bowden of Hernando; three sisters, Dorothy Jones of Sardis, Gloria Woodard of Southaven and Clair Hopper of Memphis; one brother Clyde Sellers of Crenshaw and one grandchild.


Braden, Neal I.
Neal I. Braden, 82, of Sardis, died Wednesday, February 26, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford of heart failure.

Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Forrest Memorial Park in Batesville. Rev. Derrick Simmons will officiate. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Braden, born Aug. 31, 1920 to the late James Echols and Ruby Irene Dew Braden, was a retired supervisor for Firestone Tire of Memphis and a World War II Army veteran.

Survivors include one daughter, Penny Braden Durham of Sardis; one step-daughter, Sandra "Sammy" Gray Deane of Sardis; three brothers, Raymond Braden and George Braden both of Memphis and James Braden of Sardis; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Walker Braden.


Braswell, Dorothy K.
Dorothy K. Braswell, 94, widow of James G. Braswell, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003.

Braswell, daughter of the late Henry and Cora Wardlaw Kimbrell who once were residents on Terza Road, was preceded in death by her sister Virginia K. Smith.

Brenner, Hugo Louis "Papps"
Hugo Louis "Papps" Brenner, 94, of Memphis, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at St. Francis Nursing Home.

Stateroom services are Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at Memphis Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Burial is at Eagle Mausoleum Memory Hill Gardens. Memphis Funeral Home had charge.

Brenner, born Dec. 4, 1908, served as Lt. Colonel of St. Louis District Ordinance, U.S. Army, and received an engineering degree from the University of Missouri. At the age of 17 he built his own car; he designed a machine to make custom filled shoe supports that were used by the U.S. Army during WWII; he designed a line of automobile repair tools that were marketed and sold until the war closed his factory. After the war he designed and marketed metal toys. He was manager of Medart Locker Company in Greenwood, Batesville American in Batesville and owner of Brenner Tool and Manufacturing in Cleveland. During the war he served as Lieutenant Colonel of the St. Louis District Ordinance office where he was in charge of 80 gage inspectors and supervised the manufacture of gages in eight factories located in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. He was deacon and elder at Greenwood, Cleveland, Batesville and Long Beach Presbyterian Churches. He was married to Ida Catherine Spencer Brenner for 62 years. She preceded him in death.

Survivors include one son Robert S. Brenner of Memphis; one daughter Carol Brenner Ingram of Batesville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Brist, Frederick W. Sr.
Frederick W. Brist Sr., 70, of Pope, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at his residence of heart failure.

Memorial services were Saturday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. The body was cremated. Rev. Jimmy Bryant officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Brist, born Feb. 5, 1933, to Frederick W. and Peggy Brist II, was a member of Poplar Avenue Baptist Church and was retired from the real estate industry.

He is preceded in death by his wife Quida Jean Renfroe Brist.

Survivors include his son Frederick W. Brist Jr. of Pope and one grandson Frederick W. Brist V.


Brooks, Essie Maude
Essie Maude Brooks, 102, formerly of Enid, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at San Bernardino Medical Center in San Bernardino, Calif.

Services were Thursday at Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church in Enid. Burial was at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Enid. Rev. William Johnson officiated. Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. had charge.

Brooks, born Jan. 28, 1901, to the late Addie Anderson, was a housewife and a member of Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church.

Survivors include a great nephew Donald Walken of Chicago, Ill. who cared for Mrs. Brooks.

Clarence E. Brown, 59, of Sardis, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Greenwood Lefore Hospital in Greenwood.

Services are Sunday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Gillion M.B. Church in Sardis. Burial is at Gillion Cemetery in Sardis. Rev. Walter Newson will officiate. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Brown, born Jan. 31, 1944, to the late Clarence Brown and the late Minnie Draper, was a retired construction worker and a member of Mt. Gillion M.B. Church.

Survivors include his step-mother Lelia Brown of Sardis; four daughters, Tasha Harris of Batesville, Tina Brown of Chicago, Ill., Carolyn Fondren of L.A., Calif. and Stephanie Harris of St. Louis, Mo.; three sons, Gary Brown of Batesville, Reginald Brown and Derrick Brown, both of Chicago, Ill.; nine sisters, Mary Hines, Frances Richardson and Laura Hamilton, all of Sardis, Dorothy Thompson, Rosie L. Williams, Delia Fondren, Margaret Pride, Minnie Richardson and Ruby Hall, all of Batesville; 12 brothers, Glenn Rudd of Aberdeen, James Rudd, Roger Brown, Johnny Brown, Clarence Rudd, M.C. Rudd, Charles Sledge, all of Batesville, Sammy Rudd, Arthur Rudd, Charles Rudd and Charles Brown, all of Memphis, and Willie M. Brown of Canton; and 12 grandchildren.
    


Brown, Dorylan "Dee"
Dorylan "Dee" Brown, 71, of Kilmichael, died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at his residence of cancer.

Services were Tuesday at Poplar Springs Baptist Church near Kilmichael with interment at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Pope. Rev. Joseph Sansing and Rev. Brad Herod officiated. Oliver Funeral Home had charge.

Brown, the son of Doris Wilma Brown of Pope and the late Fay Brown, was an industrial sewing machine mechanic, member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his mother, Doris Wilma Brown of Pope; five daughters, Amanda D. Brown of Winona, Wanda Lenard of Montgomery, Ala., Leah Faye Turner of Phoenix City, Ala., Tammy Bross of Crenshaw and Paula Davis of Sumrall; three sons, Dorylan Monroe Brown Jr. of Batesville, Steve Brown of Batesville and Wesley Bradley of Kilmichael; one brother, Billy Fay Brown of Pensacola, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Fay Brown, his brother, James Brown, and two sons, Phillip Bradley and Kevin Brown.


Brown, Melba Henley
Melba Henley Brown, 77, of Clarksdale, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Northwest Regional Medical Center of cancer.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. at National Funeral Home. Interment was at Memorial Gardens. Rev. Joe Brown, Rev. Donnie Brown and Rev. Floyd Cooper officiated services. National Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Brown, born May 11, 1925, in Eupora was a homemaker and a member of Rena Lara Baptist Church. She was also a member of Rena Lara Widows Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Brown Norris of Memphis, Tenn. and Lisa Brown Wilkerson of Rena Lara, Miss.; two sons, Woody Brown of Clarksdale, and Bobby Brown of Batesville; six sisters, Lois Lewis of Eupora, Johnnie Taylor of Tupelo, Mildred Hedgecock Scro of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Charlene Jones of Birmingham, Ala., Nellie Smith of Hayden, Ala., and Sara Elkin of Columbus, Miss.; and one brother, Ralph Henley of Birmingham, Ala.

Ora O. Brown, 83, of Courtland, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at her residence of heart failure.

Brown, born June 7, 1920, to the late Garfield and the late Josie Mooney Helms, was a homemaker.

She is preceded in death by her husband George W. Brown and her son William Eddie Brown.

Survivors include three daughters, Sandra White of Batesville, Patricia Sexton of Strayhorn and Betty Jean Haas of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; three sons, George Danny Brown of Batesville, J.W. Jackson and Donald Eugene Jackson, both of Pittsburgh, Calif.; one sister Ruby Helms Sellers of Birmingham, Ala.; three brothers, Garfield Helms Jr. of Blytheville, Ark., Ernest Helms and Bobby Helms, both of Paris, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.


Brown, Thelma Etta Sanders
Thelma Etta Sanders Brown, 87, of Pope died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi of heart failure.

Funeral services were Thursday at Dickins Chapel. Burial was at Batesville Magnolia Cemetery. Rev. William Johnson officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Brown, born Oct. 19, 1915, to the late William A. Sanders and the late Emma Crowder Sanders, was a homemaker and a member of Chapel Hill Methodist Church.

Survivors include one sister Alvie Sanders Baker of Pope.

Christie Lynn Browning, 16, of Plano, Ill., died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, as a result of an auto accident.

Services were Thursday at Larson-Nelson Funeral Home in Plano. Burial was at Little Rock Township Cemetery in Plano. Pastor Richard Van Cleve officiated. Nelson Funeral Home had charge.

Browning, born Dec. 6, 1986, to Jeanette R. (Smith) Browning of Plano. and David K. Browning of Pontotoc, was a home-schooled student and was a very upbeat and caring young lady. She loved spending time with her family and many friends.

Survivors include her parents, Jeanette Butler of Plano. and David K. Browning of Pontotoc; three brothers, David Jeremy Browning of Pontotoc, and Kyle and Justin Butler, both of Plano; grandparents, Dean and Eva Smith of Plano and Charles and Geneva Browning of Ecru; and one great-grandmother Lois Browning of Batesville.

She was preceded in death by one uncle Curt Browning.

Gene D. Brunt, 62, of Sardis, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at his residence.

Brunt, born Feb. 4, 1941, to the late William G. Brunt and Rosie Brunt was a mechanical operator and a member of Mt. Level M.B. Church.

Bryant, John J. Jr.
John J. Bryant Jr., 42, of Charleston, died Friday, September 19, 2003, at his residence.

Services were Sunday at the First Baptist Church. Burial was in Charleston. Newsom Funeral Home had charge.

Bryant, born Feb. 13, 1961, was a truck driver.

Survivors include his wife Cindy Rounsaville Bryant; his mother Madge Bryant of Batesville; one daughter Ashley B. Williams of Charleston; one son John J. Samuel David "Davy" Bryant, III, 7, of Batesville, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital, North Mississippi of heart failure.

Services were Thursday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Forrest Memorial Park. Rev. Kevin Crofford officiated services. Well Funeral Home had charge.

Bryant was born June 22, 1995, in Clarksdale to Olivia M. Phelps and Samuel David Bryant Jr., both of Batesville.

Survivors include, in addition to his parents, his step-mother Tammy Bryant; two sisters, Morgan Booth and Savannah Bryant ; one brother, Hunter Bryant; one step-sister, Kristen Sneed; grandparents, Linda C. Phelps, Samuel and Patty Broome Bryant, and Donald Phelps; step-grandparents, Angie Phelps, Monty and Jo Ann Patterson Ware; great-grandparents, Mary Frances Tidwell, Frances Madge Bryant, Martha and Bernard Phelps, all of Batesville; and great-great grandparents, Horace and Ruby Goforth of Sardis.
 


Buckley, Leon
Leon Buckley, 51, of Boston, Mass., died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003.

Services were at Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury, Mass. Rev. Waters officiated. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery in Boston.

Buckley, born Jan. 19, 1952, in Charleston to Lorine and the late John Buckley, graduated from Patton Lane High School in Batesville. He was president of the Hi-Y Club and played on the basketball and football team. He attended Quincy Jr. College and Northeastern University. He was a Boston Police Officer for over 20 years.

Buckley professed his religion early in life as a member of the Popular Springs Baptist Church. He sang in the choir and taught Sunday school.

He is survived by his wife, Lena Buckley and children Michelle Leon, Ernest and Shari Buckley and one grandson. He is also survived by brothers; John Buckley of Chicago, Ill., Harvey Buckley of Boston, Mass., and Robert Buckley of Mass.; sisters, Erma Buckley of New York, Mary Buckley of Miami, Fla., Vera Buckley of Boston, Mass., Dr. Alice Buckley of Detroit, Mich., Viola and Arbie Jo Buckley of Miss.

Sherlena "Penny" Burgess, 23, of Southaven, died Sunday, September 14, 2003, of a homicide.

Services were Sunday at Second Concord M.B. 4-Way Church in Batesville. Burial was at Second Concord Cemetery. Rev. Joseph Wilson officiated. Cooley’s Mortuary had charge.

Burgess, born April 22, 1980, to Lorane Burgess and Shirley McKinney Burgess, was the assistant manager for Foot Action in Memphis, a member of Second Concord M.B. Church and a choir member.
Survivors include her parents, Lorane and Shirley Burgess of Batesville; two brothers Shedrick McKinney of Waterloo, Iowa and Lorane Burgess Jr. of Batesville and her grandparents, J.D. and Annie McKinney of Batesville.

Bobby Dean Burks, 71, of Crowder, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at Quitman County Hospital in Marks of cancer.

Burks, born Jan. 17, 1932, to the late Dora Burks and the late Adell Robbins Allen, was a retired auto parts supplier.

Survivors include three daughters, Darlene McGregor of Crowder, Carolyn Cruse of Pocahontas, Tenn. and Tracy Winters Sorsby of Elaine, Ark.; two sons David Filyaw of Memphis and Aaron Winters of Jackson; three sisters, Vivian Wimberly, Eloise Simpson and Betty Ann Goodson, all of Calhoun City; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.


Burnett, Mae Edwards
Mae Edwards Burnett, 89, of Southaven, died Friday, July 11, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto in Southaven.

Graveside services will be held today at 10 a.m. at Batesville Magnolia Cemetery. Twin Oaks Funeral Home in Southaven has charge.
Burnett, born July 11, 1914, to the late Thomas and Cornelia Nickles, was a housewife and a member of Longcrest Baptist Church in Memphis.

She is preceded in death by her husband H.W. Burnett and son Donald Burnett.

Survivors include four daughters, Eleanor Wilkerson of Memphis, Judy Snell, Glenda Burnett and Connie Burnett, all of Southaven; two sons, Glenn Burnett of Olive Branch and Paul Burnett of Longview, Texas; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Margaret Elizabeth Fowler Burns, 85, of Batesville, died Jan. 24, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare of heart failure.

Burns, born Dec. 15, 1918, to the late Mrs. Nettie Hyland Fowler and the late Mr. Angelo Fowler, was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Roy Burns of Courtland and Gary Burns of Memphis, Tenn.; six daughters, Brenda Cagle of Millington, Tenn., Margaret Bernice Fox and Linda Paige both of Sardis, Lona Porter of Coldwater, and Yvonne Odom and Peggy Melton both of Courtland; five brothers, Doug Fowler, Rupert Fowler and Coleman Fowler, all of Courtland, Billy Ray Fowler of Conroe, Texas., and Harry Fowler of Walnut; two sisters, Osie Fay White of Nacogdoches, Texas., and Irene Porter of Courtland; 32 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

Burns was preceded in death by five sons, James Burns, Rocky Burns, Wayne Burns, Tommy Burns, and Haywood Burns, Jr.

Butler, Artanya M. "Sha"
Artanya M. "Sha" Butler, 29, of Horn Lake, died after an illness Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Methodist Central Hospital in Memphis.

Services are today at 1 p.m. at Concord M.B. Church in Batesville. Burial will be at Macedonia Cemetery. Pastor Gary Faulkner will officiate. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Butler, born March 19, 1974, to Wesley Butler and Flora Baker Butler, was the co-manager at Wal-Mart in Southaven and a member of Cumming Street M.B. Church in Memphis.

Survivors include her mother Flora Butler of Batesville; her father Wesley Butler of Batesville; four sisters, Trixy Butler of Batesville, Shannon Butler, Priscilla Wallace, both of Charlotte, N.C. and Sturleen Morris of Oxford and one brother Taplis Butler of Batesville.
