BATESVILLE – The State Championship would have been the crowning glory of an undefeated season.
But that was not to be as the Tigers fell 21-14 to a very tough and determined Wayne County War Eagle team, Friday, Dec. 6.
With the temperature at a cold 38 degrees which fell throughout the evening, the Tigers entered the game with an undefeated 14-0 record and the War Eagles 13-1. Both teams finished the season 14-1 before an estimated 11,750 crowd.
South Panola won the toss and elected to kick the ball. Wayne County took the opening ball on its own 32 yard line. The possession ended with an interception by Tiger defensive back Johnathon Webster.
The War Eagles had moved the ball to the Tiger 28 yard line. After a holding penalty on the Tigers, the Tigers took over the ball deep in their own territory on the four yard line with 8:57 left in the first quarter.
On the fourth play of the drive, the Tigers lost tight end Charles Twilley for the game to a hip injury. The Tigers were not able to turn the interception into a score and was forced to punt it away. |
