Tigers bound for State Championship

SOUTHAVEN – Through some gutsy plays, the South Panola Tigers were able to stump Southaven 21-10 and earn a fifth trip to the state championship game.

After three back-to-back appearances in 1996, ?97 and ?98, the Tigers have not been in the final round since.

For its first playoff appearance since 1991, Southaven had a good run and ends the season 10-4.

The Tigers (14-0) claimed the North Half title and will enter the championship with its best record since 1997. The No. 1 Tigers will meet No. 3 Wayne County Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:15 p.m.

The 5A State Championship will be played in Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson.

The Tigers and the Chargers met earlier in the year in a Tiger 28-14 win.

In this game before an estimated 7,000 the Tigers had to utilize the services of different entities of the team in order to get the job done. South Panola got on the board first on a 15-yard quarterback keeper by Rickey Wright with 5:03 to go in the first quarter.

Ole Miss honored its seniors prior to the kickoff of the Eggbowl Game against Mississippi State Thursday, Nov. 28. Honored from Courtland was Toward Sanford (back) with his parents James and Valerie Sanford and his daugher, Ariel.

SP Schools to Dismiss Early Friday; Early Tickets Available at High School
South Panola will travel to Jackson to take on the Wayne County War Eagles in the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) 5A State Championship Friday, Dec. 6. The game will be held in the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium off Woodrow Wilson Drive. Kickoff is slated for 7:15 p.m.

South Panola (14-0) defeated Southaven 21-10 in the North State championship game Friday, Nov. 29, to earn the berth. Wayne County (13-1) defeated Oak Grove 28-21 in the South State championship game.

In honor of this game and to give the fans and students a chance to attend, the South Panola School District will dismiss at 1 p.m. Friday, according to superintendent Dr. C.L. Stevenson. "The schools will follow a Tuesday schedule," Stevenson said.

Tickets will be $8 and available at South Panola during regular school hours Wednesday and Thursday. At the gate, the tickets will be $10. No tickets will be sold at South Panola Friday.
