 Nationally renowned blues artist Bobby Rush had the crowd on their feet Saturday night, July 6, at the first North Mississippi Blues Heritage Festival held in Sardis.
Rush was among a dozen performers on the lineup for the event. Other top-name performers included the legendary Otha Turner, Terry "Harmonica" Bean and the House Rockers, and Carl Sims.
Promoters hoped to have several thousand spectators, but only about 1,000 people showed up in the sweltering temperature for the show. There will be a special photo page in the Friday issue of The Panolian.

Serious increase in gang wannabe’s found in city |

BATESVILLE – There is a very serious increase in "gang wannabe’s" right here in Batesville, says Police Chief Roger Vanlandingham.
"They’re pushing families to the limit," Vanlandingham said, "until they must defend themselves."
Vanlandingham said the police department had investigated 10 burglaries and attempted burglaries during the weekend of June 28 to 30.
"These were very aggressive burglaries," Vanlandingham told the Batesville Board of Aldermen Tuesday, July 2. "We’ve arrested a 16-year-old and 13-year-old youths for the crimes."
Vanlandingham told city officials some adults were providing a place for underaged gang wannabe’s to drink alcoholic beverages and use illegal drugs.

BATESVILLE – In response to Mississippi Blood Services’ (MBS) emergency appeal for blood, a Panola County blood drive has been set for Wednesday, July 17, and Thursday, July 18.
Donors can give blood Wednesday, from 10 AM to 4 PM, or Thursday, 1 PM to 8 PM, in the front hallway of Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville.

| Kids Day program set for August 4 |

BATESVILLE – Plans are underway to establish a National Kids Day, and members of the Boys and Girls Club of Batesville and Panola County are supporting this effort.
"Boys and Girls Clubs nationwide are pushing to get this in place," said Boys and Girls Club of Batesville executive director Dennis Hoskins.
National Kids Day – celebrated on the first Sunday each August – is a day to celebrate and honor children through the gift of meaningful time.
This year, the Boys and Girls Club of Batesville will celebrate National Kids Day Sunday, August 4, with a back-to-school carnival.

Trashy Business
Over 500 tons hauled monthly |

BATESVILLE – Most folks would be insulted if they were called trashy, but for Sue Johnson and Gerald Scribner, trash is their business.
Johnson, who has been working with the county for over 15 years, is the Panola County Solid Waste clerk stationed at the new solid waste transfer station in Courtland.
Scribner, supervisor of the plant, and three other county employees, along with four county inmates loaned by the sheriff’s department, haul off over 500 tons of county trash each month.
Both Scribner and Johnson praised county Jail Administrator Shot Bright for the use of the four inmates.

| Mitch Helmes, 10, was presented with a John Deere Gater and a football autographed by former Ole Miss linebacker Shane Elam, who was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in May, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Abra Auto Body and Glass in Horn Lake, one of the sponsors, held a sporting clays tournament, raising enough money to grant a wish through the Foundation.
Helmes, son of Brad Helmes and Sandy Snider, has leukemia.
