Crackdown Coming, Warns BPD |

BATESVILLE – A crackdown on traffic violations in the city limits begins Saturday, June 1, warns Batesville Police Chief Roger Vanlandingham.
Motorists should note that all traffic violations will be ticketed.
"There are many people who just don’t pay attention to traffic laws," Vanlandingham said. "We’re trying to make them more aware of the safety problems they cause when they do this.
"Our officers will be watching for violators," he said, "and will be issuing tickets for traffic violations."

| The Memphis Motorcycle Club held its second Hare Scramble Race of 2002 at Somerville, Tenn., May 19.
Racing against a field of 19 competitors, three Batesville contenders rode hard and skillfully in the Junior Class.
Parker Sissell placed third on his YZ80. Brandon Capwell placed seventh on his KX100. First time racer Everett Mixon placed sixth on his CR80E.
Batesville will host the third Hare Scramble of the Memphis Motorcycle Club, Sunday, June 9, off of John Branch Road. Races will begin at 10 a.m.

J. T. Ellis (front right) turned 98 years young Monday, May 28. A birthday celebration was held for him at Fairfield Manor, where he is a resident. His son, T. Ray Ellis (back) of Sardis and great, great-granddaughter Ashton Brooks celebrated the big day with him. J.T. Ellis is the oldest resident at Fairfield and still cares for himself every day. He still reads The Panolian, The Democrat and The Southern Reporter faithfully every week.

| $75,000 Gas Bill Discussed |

SARDIS – The $75,000 spent on gas at the Como schools campus from April 2001 to April 2002 had the North Panola School District Board of Trustees searching for ways to reduce the bill.
Board members agreed Monday, May 20, they needed to take a serious look at the problem.
"It should be our priority to get this Como bill reduced," said board member Richard Darby.
That bill, which is paid to the Town of Como, is more than three times what the North Panola High School and Green Hill Elementary School campuses paid to the City of Sardis combined.
Those two school campuses together paid approximately $24,000 from April 2001 to April 2002.
