Final Plans Set for Batesville Civic Center |

BATESVILLE – Final plans for the Batesville Civic Center were pinned down and an estimate of cost obtained from Grenada architect Girault Jones last week.
During a two-hour informal work session Tuesday, May 21, the Batesville Board of Aldermen reviewed the plans for the 91,850 square feet facility that is estimated to cost over $9.5 million to build.
Jones told city leaders the dirt work must be completed before the contractors can bid the project. He also said he needed to know where the utility lines will be placed at the site.

Mary Nash celebrated her 101st birthday with family and friends last week at Beverly Healthcare in Batesville. She was born May 12, 1901, and lived in Coffeeville for most of her life.

| Miles Convicted in Day-Long Trial |

BATESVILLE – A Panola County Jury found a Memphis man guilty of larceny and uttering forgery following a day long trial in Batesville.
Hershel Miles, Jr., 30, of 1912 Farrington Road, Memphis, was convicted last week of the September 1, 2001, incident that occurred in the southeastern part of Panola County. |

| Students in the Batesville Karate Club attended the final tournament of the Southern Martial Arts spring series held May 11, in Greenwood. There were approximately 200 competitors at the tournament.

Answers Sought
Shooting Under Investigation |

BATESVILLE – Details involving the investigation of the shooting death of a Holcomb man are sketchy, with Tallahatchie County officials keeping mum on the incident.
Rumors about the shooting, which allegedly involves a Panola County woman, left residents seeking answers and finding none.
Chester Ray "Jay" King, Jr., 37, of 611 Cascilla Road, Holcomb, died Saturday, May 18, after being shot once in the head with a handgun, according to a report published in The Sun Sentinel in Charleston.
The shooting occurred at approximately 6 p.m. at a residence located at 52 Ruffin Road, located in northeastern Tallahatchie County, a mere half mile south of the Panola County line.
King was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 7:33 p.m., according to published reports.
