Fine Arts
Stanley Thomas, Jr. of Batesville took first place in the fine crafts category of the Eastern Shore Art Association’s 50th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival in Fair Hope, Alabama. He also received the Patron Award for the items, which are handcrafted by a process called segmented wood turning. He will have his items on display at SpringFest, which will be held May 18 in downtown Batesville.
 

Contracts Awarded

BATESVILLE – The Panola County Board of Supervisors awarded contracts for three county road and bridge projects Monday, April 8. The largest project – 2.9 miles of new road construction at Macedonia-Parks Place Road – was awarded to Camco Construction Co. of Oxford, with a low bid of $1,064,828.43. The state had estimated the work to cost approximately $1,191,865. The project will be funded by federal funds (80%) and state/county funds (20%).
 

County hits 10.5 percent
JACKSON – Mississippi’s unemployment rate fell in February as 6,100 more people were working during the month than in January, the Mississippi Employment Security Commission (MESC) announced Friday, March 29.

BATESVILLE – Over $180,000 in equipment purchases were approved by city officials Tuesday, April 2.

SP Spring Game
South Panola High School head football coach Ricky Woods announced South Panola will play a spring game.

The Tigers will travel to Jackson to play Jackson Provine on Hughes Field, Thursday, May 16.

A definitive time has not been set. The Tigers begin spring training Monday, April 29.

The Tigers begin the 2002 season against Moss Point, Friday, August 30. South Panola will host this year’s event.

This game is usually played on a Saturday, but due to Ole Miss opening at home the same day, school officials decided to play the game on Friday night.
